12.RBI retains SBI, ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank as D-SIB 2022

The Reserve Bank of India has retained State Bank of India , ICICI Bank and HDFC Bank as Domestic Systemically Important Banks (D-SIBs) . These three banks remain in the D-SIB list published by RBI with effect from September 04, 2017. Domestic systemically important banks are those banks that, if they fail, have a significant impact on the economy. D-SIB banks are classified into 5 buckets. Bucket 1, Bucket 2, Bucket 3, Bucket 4 and Bucket 5. Bucket 5 is the most important followed by others in descending order. Bucket 3 contains State Bank of India, while Bucket 1 contains ICICI Bank and HDFC Bank. The updated list is based on the data collected from banks till March 31, 2021.

13.Telangana tops in most ODF villages

Telangana in the list of most Open Defecation Free (ODF+) villages by December 31, 2021 under the Swachh Bharat Mission (Gramin) Phase-II programranked first in the country. Out of 14,200 villages in the state, 13,737 villages are in the ODF+ list, which is 96.74 per cent. It is followed by Tamil Nadu with 4,432 villages (35.39%) and Karnataka with 1,511 villages (5.59%). Gujarat ranked 17th with only 83 villages (0.45%). The state government has enacted a new Telangana Panchayat Raj Act to ensure the overall development of the villages. A secretary has been posted in each panchayat to ensure smooth implementation of welfare programmes, strict monitoring, digital reporting and comprehensiveness of good governance in villages. Multi-purpose workers have been appointed to maintain proper sanitation in the villages. There are 12,769 dedicated compost sheds in all gram panchayats. Tankers have also been provided to water the plants for greenery in the villages.

14.New variant of covid-19 found in France ‘IHU’

Scientists and experts in France have reportedly identified a new variant ‘ IHU ‘ of COVID-19 . The new variant is said to have a higher mutational strain than Omicron. The B.1.640.2 or IHU variant was first identified by academics at the Institute IHU Mediterranee Infection and comprises 46 mutations, exceeding omicrons. About 12 cases of this new variant have been reported near Marseille and it has been linked to the African country of Cameroon. But, the Omicron strain still dominates most parts of the world.

Vinod Kannan said Vistara Airlines took over as chief executive officer (CEO). He replaced Leslie Thng who was the CEO from July 16, 2017 to December 31, 2021. It said that Deepak Rajawat has been promoted to play the role of Chief Commercial Officer of Vistara. Vistara is a 51:49 joint venture between Tata Sons Pvt Ltd and Singapore Airlines. Kannan has spent more than two decades working with SIA and has held several senior positions at the airline’s head office in Singapore as well as overseas.

World Braille Day is observed every year on 4 January to spread the importance of Braille script for visually impaired people . The United Nations General Assembly had decided to celebrate this day in November 2018 . The first World Braille Day was observed on 4 January 2019 . Millions of visually impaired people around the world are receiving education and training through the Braille script. Braille is a writing script for the visually impaired. In this script, letters are written through raised dots, which can be read by visually impaired people by touching them with their fingers. World Braille Day is also celebrated as the birth anniversary of French academician Louis Braille .Louis Braille , who invented Braille in 1809 did. In this script, letters and numbers are written through six raised dots.

Padmashree Sindhutai Sapkal , famous as Mother Teresa of Maharashtra, passed away in Pune. Sindhutai, 73, was suffering from septicemia and was undergoing treatment at Galaxy Hospital in Pune for the last one and a half months. Last year he was awarded the Padma Shri. Sindhutai, who takes care of homeless children, is said to have 1,500 children, more than 150 daughters-in-law and more than 300 sons-in-law. Sindhu Tai spent her life in the service of orphaned children, sometimes even begging in trains to feed them.
