1 Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese wins federal election with a big majority

Australia ‘s Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has won the federal election with a big majority. The Labor Party has the largest majority in the 150-seat House of Representatives has won 84 seats and the Liberal-National Party 33 in the 150-seat House of Representatives. Mr Albanese has become the first Australian Prime Minister in 21 years to win two consecutive elections. He has promised modest tax cuts, affordable health services and new homes for first-time buyers. Opposition Liberal-National Coalition leader Peter Dutton has accepted defeat.
2 Prime Minister lays the foundation stone of DRDO’s new missile test range in Andhra Pradesh

The Prime Minister also laid the foundation stone of a missile test range to be built at Nagayalanka in Andhra Pradesh at a cost of about Rs 1,460 crore . It will include a launch centre, technical equipment facilities, indigenous radars, telemetry and electro-optical systems that will enhance the country’s defence preparedness. India has two functional missile test ranges at Chandipur and Wheeler Island off the coast of Odisha . . These missile sites are not suitable for testing the missiles that DRDO is developing under Phase 2 of Ballistic Missile Defence (BMD). Taking into account the requirement of DRDO, the Cabinet Committee on Security of the Government of India approved a new missile test site at Nagayalanka in Krishna district of Andhra Pradesh.
Dr. L. Murugan released white paper during 3 Waves Summit

Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Dr L Murugan released the white paper ‘ Live Events Economy : A Strategic Growth Imperative ‘ , during the Waves Summit in Mumbai . It provides a comprehensive analysis of the country’s rapidly growing live entertainment industry, emerging trends, growth trajectory and strategic recommendations for the sector’s sustained growth. The report states that the country’s organised live events segment has expanded by 15 per cent and is projected to generate an estimated Rs 13 billion in revenue in 2024. This is one of the highest growth rates in India’s broader media and entertainment industry. The country aims to be among the top five live entertainment destinations in the world by 2030. Event tourism has also grown and about five million fans attend live concerts. Dr Murugan also released the Statistical Handbook on Media and Entertainment Sector 2024-25.

The All India Football Federation Awards for the year 2024-25 were presented in Bhubaneswar . Subhasish Bose was named the best male player of the year and Soumya Guguloth was named the best female player. Also, Khalid Jamil was named the best male coach and Sujata Kar was named the best female coach. Vishal Kaith won the best male goalkeeper and Elangbam Panthoi Chanu won the best female goalkeeper award. Brison Fernandes won the promising male player and Toijam Thoibisna Chanu won the promising female player award.
5 Indian Air Force conducted a major exercise on Ganga Expressway, Air Force demonstrated emergency flying capability

The Indian Air Force conducted a major exercise on the three and a half kilometer long airstrip on the Ganga Expressway in Shahjahanpur district of Uttar Pradesh . In this, the Air Force gave an excellent display of its flying capability. In this first of its kind display, the Air Force’s ultra-modern fighter aircraft like Rafale, Jaguar, Mirage-2000, Sukhoi 30 MKI and Mig-29 took part. Along with this, the Air Force’s cargo aircraft C-130 J Super Hercules and AN-32 aircraft and Mi-17 V-5 helicopter also participated in the air show. The air show was organized during day and night to check the efficiency of the airstrip as an alternate runway during emergency operations and natural disasters during war.

The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), Ministry of Commerce and Industry has issued a notification banning the import of all goods imported or exported from Pakistan to India . This will ban the import of goods from Pakistan directly or through any other trade route. The instructions issued through Notification No. 06/2025-26 dated May 2, 2025 have come into effect with immediate effect. A new paragraph, Para 2.20A, has been added in the FTP 2023:
7 India deployed 34 supercomputers with 35 petaflop power under NSM

On 28 April 2025 , the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) announced that a total of 34 supercomputers with a combined computing power of 35 petaflops (1 million gigabytes, gb) have been deployed across India under the National Supercomputing Mission (NSM) . NSM has opened new doors for researchers in small towns by providing them access to world-class supercomputing facilities. These 34 supercomputers have been installed at top academic and research institutions like the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Institute of Information Technology (IIT), C-DAC and several institutions in tier-II and tier-III cities. NSM was launched by the Government of India (GoI) in 2015 with the aim of strengthening the country in the field of supercomputing. Through this mission, India plans to develop high performance computing (HPC) systems.
8 ADB-WEF Report 2025: Asia-Pacific lags behind in grid readiness despite US$729.4 billion in clean energy investments

On April 28, 2025, Manila (Philippines) -based Asian Development Bank (ADB) in collaboration with Cologne (Switzerland) -based World Economic Forum (WEF) released the Energy Transition Readiness Assessment (ETRA) report for Developing Asia and the Pacific . This is ADB’s first initiative to assess the capacity of regional countries to transform their energy systems, using a new readiness framework based on the WEF’s Energy Transition Index (ETI). The report underscores the critical need for substantial investment in modernizing and interconnecting electricity grids in developing countries in Asia and the Pacific to fully harness the benefits of the energy transition. Clean energy investment in developing Asia grew more than 900% from 2013 to 2023, reaching US$729.4 billion in 2023. This represents 45% of global clean energy investment. The International Finance Corporation (IFC) estimates that India, ASEAN and other emerging markets and developing economies (EMDEs) need US$23 billion/year in concessional funding to unlock private capital.

In April 2025 , Texas (United States, USA) -based Axiom Space Inc. acquired Tejpaul Bhatia, an executive of Indian origin. as its new chief executive officer (CEO). He will replace Dr. Kam Ghaffarian, co-founder and executive chairman of Axiom Space, who was serving as interim CEO after Michael Suffredini joined the company’s board of directors in August 2024.
10 Gunjan Soni appointed Country MD of YouTube India

On April 28, 2025, YouTube, a United States of America (USA) -based subsidiary of Alphabet Inc. , appointed Gunjan Soni as the country managing director (MD) for YouTube India . He replaced Ishan Chatterjee, who held the position from November 2022 to October 2024, after which he moved to JioCinema as the chief revenue officer (CRO).

World Press Freedom Day is celebrated on 3 May . The day is observed to promote press freedom and assess the state of press freedom around the world. This year’s theme is Reporting in a New World – The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Press Freedom and Media . The theme highlights the rapid development and use of artificial intelligence in transforming journalism, media and press freedom. World Press Freedom Day was declared by the United Nations General Assembly in 1991. It was initiated following a call by African journalists who drafted the historic Windhoek Declaration on Media Pluralism and Freedom.
