11. Mysterious fever scrub typhus in parts of Uttar Pradesh

  • Recently a mysterious fever was reported from some parts of Uttar Pradesh. It killed about 40 people in a week, mostly children. This viral fever has been identified as scrub typhus. The cases of scrub typhus are mainly found in Firozabad, Agra, Mainpuri, Etah and Kasganj in Uttar Pradesh.districts have come to the fore. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath visited the affected area and said that a team of experts from Lucknow’s King George Medical University would investigate the deaths of the children. A team from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) was also called to look into the situation. Scrub typhus is a re-emerging Rickettsial infection. This vector-borne disease has been previously reported in India and other South Asian countries. The disease causes fever and rash. It also affects the central nervous system, cardiovascular system, respiratory system, renal system and gastrointestinal system. In complicated cases, it can cause pneumonia, meningo-encephalitis, gastro-intestinal bleeding, renal failure and respiratory distress syndrome.

  • According to a report titled “ Protected Areas in Central Africa 2020”, Central Africa can develop itself in a sustainable manner if resources are shared equitably and its environment is protected . This report is from the Central Africa Forest Observatory (OFAC)which is a specialized unit of the Central African Forests Commission (COMIFAC). Central Africa is rich in copper, petroleum, iron, manganese, diamond, cobalt and coltan. According to this report, development based on respect for the environment and social equality is the only way to prevent poverty and war. According to the macroeconomic forecasts for 2020, Central African countries are reporting a growth rate of between -2.5% and -4.3%. The economic situation has worsened due to the global health crisis caused by the novel coronavirus disease, along with a drop in oil prices per barrel since late 2018. Thus, governments in the region are shifting oil extraction toward mining and forestry industries and diversifying national economies.

15. China develops small helicopter for Mars mission

  • China has developed a prototype small helicopter for surveillance purposes on future Mars missions . According to the Chinese Space Science Agency, this small helicopter has been developed after the historic landing of a robotic rover on Mars. The prototype helicopter is similar in appearance to the robotic helicopter Ingenuity , which NASA has developed in its Developed for the mission. The Chinese prototype helicopter includes two rotor blades, a sensor and camera base, and four slender legs. However, it does not include a solar panel on top like the Ingenuity. China plans its first crewed mission to Mars in 2033. China landed its Mars rover on Mars in May 2021. This was China’s first mission to Mars. It has become the second country after the US to land such a mission on Mars.

  • The New Development Bank (NDB), set up by a group of BRICS countries , has added the United Arab Emirates, Uruguay and Bangladesh as new members on September 2, 2021 . This first batch of new members was added as part of the expansion drive of the bank. The New Development Bank was launched in 2015 by BRICS members- Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. It was earlier known as “BRICS Development Bank”. Its headquarter is in Shanghai. NDB’s first regional office was set up in Johannesburg, South Africa, while the second regional office was set up in Brazil in 2019, followed by Russia.

17. Finance Minister chairs 24th meeting of FSDC

  • Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman the Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi in the Financial Stability and Development Council ( Financial Stability And Development Council – FSDC ) of the 24th meeting presided over. FSDC is an apex-level body that was set up by the Government of India to be a super regulatory body. Its establishment was first recommended by the Raghuram Rajan Committee in 2008. Finally in 2010, Pranab Mukherjee (then Finance Minister of India) decided to set up this autonomous body to deal with the financial regularities of the entire financial sector in India. It is not a statutory body. No separate funds are allocated for carrying out the activities of this Council. FSDC was established in December 2010 as an apex level forum to strengthen and institutionalize mechanisms to maintain financial stability, enhance inter-regulatory coordination and promote development of the financial sector.

19. NASA’s Mars rover collects its first rock sample
