1 Base year of trade indices changed to 2022-23

The Government  of India has  changed the base year  of  India’s Merchandise Trade Indices from 2012-13 to 2022-23  . This announcement was made on  February 20, 2026.  This revision aims to improve the relevance, reliability, and analytical utility of trade data  , providing more accurate information to policymakers, researchers, and industry. This revision was carried out by the Directorate General of Commercial Intelligence and Statistics (DGCI&S) because of major structural changes in the economy and global trade patterns over the past decade. Changing the base year is a standard statistical procedure to ensure economic indicators remain accurate and up-to-date. Trade patterns change over time, so the old base year may not accurately reflect current realities. Now, making 2022-23 the new base year will provide policymakers with a more realistic and contemporary view of export-import performance and global competitiveness.
