1.Tiger Woods arrests in Florida on DUI charge, say reports :-

(I)Former world number one golfer Tiger Woods was arrested in South Florida on Monday morning on a charge of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, according to media reports.

(II)Woods, who is second on the all-time list with 14 major titles, was taken into custody at about 3 a.m. (0700 GMT) near his Jupiter Island home and released hours later on his own recognizance, NBC affiliate WPTV reported.

 

2.Advani to face court today :-

(I)Veteran Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders L.K. Advani and Murli Manohar Joshi, and Union Minister Uma Bharti, are expected to appear before a special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court here on Tuesday in the Babri Masjid demolition case.

(II)On May 25, the court summoned the leaders to appear before it in person on May 30 for the framing of charges against them.

3.6-day war begets 50 years of conflict for Israel :-

(I)It may well be remembered as a pyrrhic victory for Israel — in six days it stunned the world by vanquishing several Arab armies, only to be saddled with a deeply corrosive 50-year fight with the Palestinians for the ‘Holy Land’.

(II)For several weeks in 1967, the underdog Israelis genuinely feared their young Jewish state would be wiped out. They mobilized reserves to face Egyptian troops arrayed at the border and barricaded the streets with sacks of sand.

4.Amit Shah a surprise guest in Nagpur :-

(I)BJP president Amit Shah made a surprise visit to Nagpur, and called on the leadership of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh at its headquarters on Monday.

(II)The meeting comes in the backdrop of the presidential election to be held in July. The ruling National Democratic Alliance is yet to announce its candidate.

5.Kashmiri youth who ‘wanted to join IS’ deported from Turkey :-

(I)A Kashmiri youth, who was allegedly trying to join the Islamic State (IS), has been deported from Turkey.

(II)The youth has been identified as Afshan Pervaz, 21, a resident of Khanyar in the Old City area of Srinagar. According to police sources, Pervaz had told his family that he wanted to go to Iran for higher education.

(III)A PTI report quoted sources as saying that he had booked a seat on a flight to Tehran on March 23.

6.Beef festivals raise Adityanath ire :-

(I)Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has questioned the silence of secular parties over Kerala’s beef festivals in protest against the Centre’s decision banning the sale of cattle for slaughter from open markets.

(II)“I feel there is a lot of talk in the country to respect each other’s feelings, and several organisations demand this in the name of secularism. But why are they silent on the Kerala incident?” he asked at a public felicitation function organised by the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad on Sunday night.

7.Macron promises a frank talk with Putin :-

(I)French President Emmanuel Macron met Russia’s Vladimir Putin near Paris on Monday, promising some frank talking with the Kremlin leader after an election campaign in which his team accused Russian media of trying to interfere.

(II)Mr. Macron, who took office two weeks ago, has said dialogue with Russia is vital in tackling a number of international disputes.

(III)Nevertheless, relations have been beset by mistrust, with Paris and Moscow backing opposing sides in the Syrian civil war and at odds over the Ukraine conflict.

8.Ahead of marquee clash, famous Pak. fan bats for India :-

(I)Well known Pakistani cricket fan ’Chacha Chicago’ is equally well known for his love for Mahendra Singh Dhoni.

(II)Now, with the gradual decline in Pakistan’s performance, the Karachi-born Mohammad Bashir has shifted allegiance to the ’formidable’ Indian team ahead of the marquee ICC Champions Trophy clash later this week.

(III)Bashir has been a familiar figure in the stands whenever the two teams have met and always giving him company has been India’s very own Sudhir Gautam, who is arguably Sachin Tendulkar’s biggest fan.

 

9.GST: Karnataka, Gujarat, Chandigarh take the lead :-

(I)With little more than a month left for the proposed rollout of the Goods and Services Tax regime, businesses in Karnataka, Gujarat and Chandigarh are likely to be the most-prepared to shift to the new indirect tax system.

(II)According to data accessed by The Hindu, a maximum number of 93.27% of the more than 5.50 lakh taxpayers in the Karnataka have enrolled for GST. However, the numbers are not so encouraging for most of the north-eastern States,and Jammu and Kashmir.

(I)The last, and lasting, image of Cannes 2017 was an emotionally charged one: jury president Pedro Almodovar trying hard to fight back tears at a press conference.
