1 Cabinet approves commitment to reduce India’s carbon emissions by 47 percent by 2035

The Cabinet  approved India’s Nationally Determined Contribution  for   the period 2031 to 2035.  This  will further strengthen the country’s commitment and ambition under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change  and  the Paris Agreement  , and demonstrate its equitable responsibility to address the impacts of climate change and sustainable development. Briefing the media,  Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnav  stated that  India is committed to reducing the carbon emission intensity of its GDP by 47 percent by 2035, compared to 2005 levels.  By February 2026, the country had achieved 52.57 percent non-fossil fuel capacity, achieving this target five years ahead of schedule. This target has now been increased to  60 percent of installed power capacity  from non-fossil fuel sources by 2035 .

2 Indian Foreign Service officer Periyasamy Kumaran appointed as India’s next High Commissioner to the UK

 

Indian Foreign Service officer Periasamy Kumaran  has been appointed as India’s next High Commissioner to   the United Kingdom   , the Ministry of External Affairs announced. Mr. Kumaran, a 1992-batch Indian Foreign Service officer, currently serves as Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs. He will assume charge shortly.

3 OECD projections: India’s GDP growth rate at 7.6% for 2025-26, 6.1% for 2026-27 and 6.4% for 2027-28

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD)  has projected  India’s GDP growth rate at 7.6% for 2025-26 ,  6.1% for 2026-27  , and  6.4% for 2027-28  . This will keep the country as the world’s fastest-growing major economy. The OECD’s Interim Economic Outlook report states that the ongoing conflict in West Asia is testing the resilience of the global economy. The disruption of cargo transportation through the Strait of Hormuz and the shutdown or damage to some energy infrastructure have led to a surge in energy prices. This has also disrupted the global supply of other vital commodities, such as energy and fertilizers, increasing costs, depressing demand, and fueling inflationary pressures. The report states that China’s growth rate is projected to decline from 5.0% in 2025 to 4.4% in 2026 and 4.3% in 2027.

4 Danish PM Mette Frederiksen resigns after defeat

On  March 26  , Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen  resigned  after losing the general election  . Her  Social Democratic Party  won only 38 out of 179 seats in Wednesday’s vote count, though  no party secured a majority  .  Mette had been Denmark’s Prime Minister since June 2019 and was set to return to power in 2022. At the age of 41, she became Denmark’s youngest Prime Minister. Elected to the Danish Parliament in 2001 at the age of 24, she became Minister of Employment in 2011 and Minister of Justice in 2015. Mette suffered from a stutter during her school days, which often led to her being teased by students. She had given up using makeup products in protest against animal testing by cosmetic companies.

5. 11 new moons found on Saturn

Taiwanese  astronomers  have  discovered 11 new moons orbiting Saturn  , bringing the total number  of  Saturn’s moons  to 285. Four new moons  have also been identified  on Jupiter , bringing  the total number of Jupiter’s moons to 101.  The newly discovered moons are irregular satellites, meaning they are smaller (about 3 km in diameter), more distant, and have wider orbits. Saturn has 285 known moons, and the discovery of these 11 new moons has made Saturn the “Moon King.” Jupiter has 101 moons, and with the discovery of these four new moons, Jupiter has made history by having more than 100 moons for the first time. Other planets, such as  Uranus (28), Neptune (16), Mars (2), and Earth (1), have stable moon counts  . Mercury and Venus, on the other hand, have no moons of their own. These moons have been discovered by the team of Edward Aston, who leads the Sinica Institute of Astronomy and Astrophysics in Taiwan.

6 Sarah Mullally becomes the first female Archbishop of Canterbury in the Church of England

 On  March 25 , Sarah Mullally  assumed  the position of Archbishop of Canterbury, the first female Archbishop of the Church of England . Sarah took the seat of the 13th-century St. Augustine’s Chair at Canterbury Cathedral in front of 2,000 people.  Prince William and his wife Catherine  ,  UK PM Keir Starmer  , and religious leaders attended the ceremony. Sarah will serve as the spiritual head of the Anglican Communion, which has approximately 85 million members worldwide.  Sarah Mullally was consecrated the 106th Archbishop of Canterbury in a ceremony held at St. Paul’s Cathedral in January 2025. This is  the first time a woman has been consecrated an Archbishop in the Church’s 1,400-year history. Justin Welby was the first bishop to hold the position. He resigned after complaints were made against him.

7 DPIIT signs MoU with Krafton India Pvt Ltd to support entrepreneurs

The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT),  Ministry  of  Commerce and Industry, has signed an agreement with Krafton India Pvt Ltd  to support  startups, innovators, and entrepreneurs across the country   . The ministry said the aim is to promote the development of entertainment, online gaming, e-sports, media, and AI-based technologies.

8 National Housing Bank launches Griha Sugam portal

The National Housing Bank  has  launched the Griha Sugam portal to promote  affordable housing financing   . The portal will help defence and government personnel avail home loans from their place of deployment. The Finance Ministry said the portal will accelerate financial inclusion by adopting digital lending. The ministry said the portal will promote home ownership through improved access to housing loans, thereby helping promote affordable and sustainable housing financing.

9 Bangladesh celebrates 56th Independence and National Day

 

Bangladesh  is celebrating  its  56th Independence Day  and  National Day , marking  the date on which Bangladesh   declared independence from Pakistan on  March 26, 1971. President Mohammad Shahabuddin  and  Prime Minister Tarique Rahmaan paid emotional tributes to the martyrs by laying wreaths at the National Martyrs’ Memorial in Savar, on the outskirts of Dhaka.
