1.Multidimensional Poverty Index

Bihar has been ranked as the poorest state in NITI Aayog ‘s Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) , followed by Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh. According to the index, Bihar has 51.91% of the population, Jharkhand has 42.16% and Uttar Pradesh has 37.79% of the population. Madhya Pradesh (36.65%) is fourth in the index, while Meghalaya (32.67%) is at fifth place. Among the states in the country that have the least poverty , Kerala (0.71 percent)is at the top. It is followed by Goa (3.76 per cent), Sikkim (3.82 per cent), Tamil Nadu (4.89 per cent) and Punjab (5.59 per cent). Among the Union Territories, Dadra and Nagar Haveli has the highest poverty. There 27.36 percent people are poor. In Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh 12.58 percent and in Delhi 4.79 percent are poor. Bihar’s 51.88 percent population (highest in the country) is malnourished, while Sikkim is the least malnourished state in the country. It is called the ‘ Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative ‘ ( OPHI ) and the ‘ United Nations Development Program ‘ ( UNDP).) was developed in the year 2010. MPI is based on the idea that poverty is not a single dimension (it not only depends on income and a person may lack many basic necessities like education, health etc.) but it is multidimensional.
