1. CJI B.R. Gavai recommends Justice Surya Kant as his successor

Chief Justice of India (CJI) Justice BR Gavai has forwarded the name of Justice Surya Kant   as his successor  to the Law Ministry. He has written a formal letter in this regard. This move comes after the Law Ministry recently requested Justice Gavai to submit the name of his successor. Justice Surya Kant, who is currently the senior-most judge of the Supreme Court and first in the seniority list,  will take over upon Justice Gavai’s retirement . Justice BR Gavai is  retiring on November 23.  Justice Surya Kant will be sworn in as the 53rd Chief Justice of India on November 24, the day after his retirement. His  tenure will be approximately 14 months and he will retire on  February 9, 2027  .

2 journalists from Belarus and Georgia receive Sakharov Prize 2025

The European Union has  announced the awarding of its highest human rights honour, the Sakharov Prize , for  the year 2025  to  two jailed journalists ,  Andrzej Pokzobut of Belarus  and  Mzia Amaghlobeli of Georgia  . Andrzej Pokzobut, a prominent Belarusian journalist and human rights advocate, was the Belarus correspondent for Gazeta Wyborcza, a leading Polish newspaper. He was sentenced to 8 years in prison on trumped-up charges. Mzia Amaghlobeli, a prominent Georgian journalist and founder of independent media organisations, founded two independent Georgian media outlets that provide truthful and unbiased news to the public. In August 2025, she was sentenced to two years in prison for slapping a police chief at an anti-government protest. The Sakharov Prize, established in 1988, is named after Soviet scientist and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Andrei Sakharov.

3 Supreme Court orders Jharkhand to declare Saranda as wildlife sanctuary

The Supreme Court  directed  the Jharkhand government  to notify  a 314-square-kilometer area  as  a wildlife sanctuary  . Revival of a long-ignored NGT order to protect biodiversity. Hearing a petition seeking compliance with the July 2022 decision of the Eastern Region Bench of the National Green Tribunal, the Supreme Court directed the Jharkhand government to notify the area as a wildlife sanctuary.  Saranda  is rapidly emerging as a conflict zone between those who favor extensive mining in the name of development and conservationists who favor sustainable mining and the preservation of its rich biodiversity.  This controversy emerged in 1906 , when  iron ore mining began in Saranda , and the process of resolution began simultaneously.

4 INS Sutlej completes 18th India-Mauritius Joint Hydrographic Survey

 

The Ministry of Defence  announced on   26 October 2025  that INS Sutlej, in collaboration with  the Mauritius Hydrographic Service,  has successfully completed a major hydrographic survey covering an area of ​​approximately 35,000 square nautical miles  .   This mission is a key part of the long-term maritime partnership between India and Mauritius, which is directly related to navigation safety, coastal management, marine resource planning and regional security.  A Memorandum of Understanding  (MoU) on Hydrographic Cooperation was signed between India and Mauritius in October 2005, under which the Indian Navy’s hydrographic fleet assists Mauritius in mapping its maritime areas and provides training to Mauritian personnel.

5 Indian Navy to induct third Survey Vessel (Large) ‘Ikshak’

The Indian Navy  ‘s indigenously built Survey Vessel (Large),  Ikshak,  is scheduled to be commissioned at Naval Base Kochi   on   6 November 2025. The ceremony will be presided over  by Chief of the Naval Staff, Admiral Dinesh Kumar Tripathi  . This   marks a milestone in  indigenous hydrographic excellence . Built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) Limited, Kolkata,  under the supervision of the Ship Production Directorate and the Warship Maintenance Team (Kolkata), Ikshak  embodies over 80 percent indigenous content  . The ship is a testament to the successful collaboration between GRSE and Indian MSMEs, proudly reflecting the spirit and strength of Aatmanirbhar Bharat. The ship’s name, Ikshak, meaning ‘The Guide’, aptly symbolizes her mission – to chart the unknown, ensure safe passage for sailors, and strengthen the nation’s maritime power.

 

6 Paul Biya, 92, the world’s oldest ruling monarch, has been re-elected as President of Cameroon. He has been declared the winner of the Cameroon presidential election.

 

Paul Biya, the world’s oldest-  ever ruling monarch, has  been declared the winner of  Cameroon’s presidential election, marking his eighth term. He received 53.66 percent of the vote. Biya  took office in 1982  and has maintained a firm grip on power ever since. He abolished presidential term limits in 2008 and won re-election by a wide margin. Biya is  only the second head of state to lead Cameroon   since independence from France in 1960 .

7 NCERT and IIT Madras sign MoU to strengthen academic research and technology integration

The National Council of Educational Research and Training  has  signed a Memorandum of Understanding with IIT-Madras in  New Delhi  to strengthen  educational research, development, training and technology integration   . The Ministry of Education said in a statement that this agreement is a step towards innovation in education. The ministry further said that this collaboration is in line with the vision of the National Education Policy 2020 and aims to promote information technology, artificial intelligence and machine learning-enabled learning solutions. The agreement will also promote research, data analytics and multilingual platforms and resources to advance teaching and training of students and teachers, and development of digital content and platforms.

8 India men’s rugby sevens team finished runners-up and won the silver medal at the Asia Rugby Emirates Sevens Trophy 2025 in Muscat.

India’s men’s rugby sevens team  finished  runners-up at   the Asia Rugby Emirates Sevens Trophy 2025   in Muscat , securing a silver medal  . This performance has placed India among Asia’s top teams, including Japan, Sri Lanka, and China. The Indian team  defeated Saudi Arabia 17-0 in the semi-final , but  lost to Kazakhstan in the final .

9 Indian Army celebrates Infantry Day (79th Valour Day)

The Indian Army  laid a grand wreath at  the National War Memorial, New Delhi  , on the occasion of  Infantry Day , also known as   Shaurya Diwas  , to pay tribute to the valor, sacrifice, and indomitable courage of the Infantry. Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi  laid a wreath at the Amar Chakra of the National War Memorial, honoring the courage and supreme sacrifice of the Infantry soldiers who laid down their lives in the service of the nation.  Celebrated annually on October 27  , Infantry Day holds a special place in the nation’s history. On this day   in 1947  , Indian Army infantrymen were  the first to land at Srinagar Airport  . The operations carried out by this contingent were acts of exceptional courage, thwarting a Pakistan-backed  tribal invasion  and safeguarding India’s territorial integrity. This occasion serves as a lasting reminder of the steadfast dedication and unparalleled valor of the Infantry in defending the nation’s sovereignty.
