The Uttar Pradesh government on Monday took a major step to end caste-based discrimination, imposing a complete ban on the mention of caste in police records and public places. This order was issued following directives from the Allahabad High Court. Chief Secretary Deepak Kumar directed all departments to no longer mention caste in FIRs, arrest memos, or other police documents. Instead, parents’ names will be used for identification. The order also mandates the immediate removal of caste-based symbols, slogans, and references from police station noticeboards, vehicles, and signboards. Caste-based rallies have been banned across the state, and strict monitoring of social media has been ordered to ensure no violations occur. However, the government clarified that caste will continue to be mentioned in cases under the Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) Prevention of Atrocities Acts, as it is a necessary legal requirement. Amendments will also be made to standard operating procedures (SOPs) and police manuals to implement this directive.
