1 Election Commission digitises index cards and statistical reports for faster access to data

The Election Commission of India (ECI)  has  announced to implement  a digital and streamlined system for preparing  index cards and statistical reports after elections  . The decision  has been taken under the chairmanship of Chief Election Commissioner Shri Gyanesh Kumar  , along with  Dr. Sukhbir Singh Sandhu  and  Dr. Vivek Joshi  in the Commission. The move is aimed at adopting a fast, accurate and transparent data management system instead of manual and multi-step processes.

 

2 In India, 269 million people came out of extreme poverty in 11 years: World Bank

 According to the new  World Bank report , India has made tremendous progress in reducing extreme poverty in 11 years  .   The country’s  extreme poverty rate was 27.1% in 2011-12  , which  has come down to just 5.3% in 2022-23  . This means that during this period about  269 million (26.9 crores) Indians have been able to get out of poverty  . In 2011-12, 344.47 million (34.4 crores) people were living in extreme poverty in the country, while by 2022-23 this number has come down to 75.24 million (7.5 crores). It is worth noting that the poverty line has been assessed according to the international standard of $ 3.00 per day (at 2021 prices). Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Maharashtra, West Bengal and Madhya Pradesh have played a big role in this change. In 2011-12, 65% of the country’s extreme poor lived in these five states. Now these states have contributed to two-thirds of the poverty reduction. If we compare the old standard, i.e. the poverty line of $2.15 per day (at 2017 prices), then India’s extreme poverty rate was 16.2% in 2011-12, which decreased to just 2.3% in 2022. On this basis, 205.93 million (20.5 crore) people were below this limit in 2011, while in 2022 this number decreased to 33.66 million (3.36 crore).

5 India’s spin bowler Piyush Chawla retires from all forms of cricket

India’s  spin bowler Piyush Chawla  has  retired from all forms of cricket  . 36-year-old Piyush has played three Tests, 25 ODIs and seven Twenty20 matches at the international level apart from domestic matches in his 20-year career. He  played his last match against Sri Lanka in the 2012 Twenty20 World Cup  . He was part of the Indian team that won the 2007 Twenty20 World Cup and the 2011 World Cup.

6 Norwegian Grandmaster Magnus Carlsen won his seventh title of the Norway Chess Tournament in Starvanger

 

Norwegian  Grandmaster  Magnus Carlsen  has  won  his  seventh title  of  Norway Chess Tournament   in Starvanger . Five-time world champion Carlsen  won the match by scoring 16 points after drawing with  India’s Arjun Erigaisi  in a thrilling final round  . Fabiano Caruana  of  USA  secured second place with 15.5 points and reigning world champion  D. Gukesh  secured  third place with 14.5 points  . USA’s Hikaru Nakamura finished fourth and Arjun Erigaisi finished fifth. In the women’s event,  Ukraine’s Anna Muzychuk  won the title. China’s Lei Tingjie finished second and  India’s Koneru Humpy  finished third .

7 Indian Grandmaster Arvind Chidambaram won the 6th Stepan Avagyan Memorial Chess Tournament

Indian Grandmaster Arvind Chidambaram  won   the  6th Stepan Avagyan Memorial Chess Tournament  held in  Jermuk, Armenia . Arvind scored  6.5 points in 9 rounds  , equal to compatriot Grandmaster R. Praggnanandhaa  , but won in a tie-break. He won due to the tie-break system – Sonneborn-Berger. In this system, the decision is made on the basis of the opponents defeated by each player.

8 India-England Test series renamed as Tendulkar-Anderson Trophy

In a historic move to honour two of Test cricket’s greatest players,  the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB)  and  the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI)  have jointly announced that  the historic Test series between India and England will  now  be known as the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy.  . The renaming aims to honour England’s most successful Test bowler James Anderson and India’s greatest batsman and most Test-match player in history, Sachin Tendulkar.

9 World Food Safety Day 2025

World Food Safety Day is celebrated   every year  on 7 June  . Its purpose is to spread global awareness about the importance of safe and nutritious food  , so that people’s health can be better and economies can become stronger. The theme of this day in 2025 is – “ Food Safety: Science in Action Action”. This theme focuses on how science, innovation and data can reduce the risk of foodborne diseases.

10 Daaji Panshikar, eminent scholar and writer of Marathi literature, a knower of  Indian epics, passed away

Daaji Panshikar,  a scholar of Indian epics and  a noted Marathi literature  scholar and writer,  passed away in  Thane, Maharashtra  . He was 92.   Panshikar is respected for his scholarly interpretation of texts such as Mahabharata, Eknathi Bhagavat and Bhavartha Ramayana .
