The Ministry of Jal Shakti  has completed the work of first water unit census  in the country  . This census provides information on the overall number of all water bodies in India, including natural and man-made water bodies such as ponds and lakes. 24,24,540 water bodies  have been enumerated  in the country  , of which 97.1% (23,55,055)  are in rural areas and only  2.9% (69,485)  are in urban areas. Top 5 states  in terms of number of water sources are  West BengalUttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and Assam Where are about 63% of the total water resources of the country. The top 5 states in terms of number of water sources in urban areas are West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Uttar Pradesh and Tripura, while the top 5 states in rural areas are West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and Assam. 59.5 percent of the water sources are ponds, followed by tanks (15.7%), reservoirs (12.1%), water conservation schemes/percolation tanks/check dams (9.3%), lakes (0.9%) and others (2.5%). 55.2% of water sources are owned by private entities while 44.8% of water sources are owned by the public sector. Of all publicly owned water sources, the maximum number of water bodies are owned by panchayats, followed by state irrigation/state water resources departments. 78% of water sources are man-made water sources while 22% are natural water bodies. 1.6% (38,496) of all water sources are reported to be encroached,

7. Bengaluru hosts conference to help cities mainstream climate action

The discussion took place on the theme ” Mainstreaming Climate Action in Cities ”  to shape G20 priorities, take next steps to accelerate climate action in India and beyond.  It brought together national and international stakeholders  on a single platform in Bengaluru . This conference is  under the G20 Presidency of India. It was part of a series of events organized during The key recommendations of the conference will be included in the U20 Communiqué and subsequently presented to the G20 negotiators. Urban 20 is a city diplomacy initiative that brings together cities from G20 member states under a common framework to discuss global economic, climate and development issues. The U20 Initiative is permanently organized by C40 cities and joint cities and local governments, led by a chair city. Its location changes every year. Maharashtra Government  has   announced 4% reservation for Divyang employees in promotions . The state cabinet has decided that this reservation will be applicable to those cadres in which the proportion of recruitment through direct service does not exceed 75 percent. The state cabinet has also decided to pay all pending dues as per 7th Pay Commission to non-teaching staff serving in all non-agriculture universities. The balance will be paid in five installments on July 1 every year over the next five years. The cabinet also decided that women belonging to open and backward classes will no longer be required to produce non-creamy layer certificate for the posts reserved for them.

17. Tata Steel to set up pilot plant for methanol

Tata Steel   is setting up a 10 tonne per day pilot plant  at   its  Kalinganagar plant in Odisha  to produce  methanol from blast furnace flue gases . If successful, this has the potential to open up opportunities for substantial production of methanol in India. The aim of the project is to test how carbon dioxide from blast furnaces in steel mills can be combined with hydrogen from an electrolyzer to produce methanol.

19. RBI allows AU Small Finance Bank to deal in foreign exchange

AU Small Finance Bank  has announced that it   has received permission from  the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to  act as an Authorized Dealer in Foreign Exchange . The Bank has obtained permission to operate as an Authorized Dealer Category – I (AD-I) under Section 10 of FEMA, 1999. As a result, the bank will be able to trade in foreign currency, provided it complies with all relevant regulations. The announcement was made by the bank in a SEBI filing.
