1 Glaw Lake becomes Arunachal Pradesh’s first Ramsar site; total number of Ramsar sites in India reaches 101
Glaw Lake in Arunachal Pradesh has been declared India’s 101st Ramsar site . Announcing this on Monday, Union Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Bhupendra Yadav described it as a significant achievement towards wetland conservation, biodiversity protection, water and climate security, and sustainable livelihoods. Glaw Lake’s selection as a Ramsar site is also historic for Arunachal Pradesh, as it is the state’s first Ramsar site. Kamlang Tiger Reserve and Wildlife Sanctuary, Glaw Lake is a pristine freshwater lake in the Eastern Himalayas and a major biodiversity hotspot. The lake is fed by perennial mountain streams and is surrounded by dense vegetation, preserving a rich flora. The Union Minister explained that the wetland is home to over 150 tree species and 49 orchid species, underscoring the ecological significance of Glaw Lake and its surrounding landscape.
2 Chief of Defence Staff addresses participants at the 4th edition of the Tri-Service Future Warfighting Course
The fourth edition of the Tri-Services Future Warfare Course commenced on August 3, 2026, at the Manekshaw Centre in New Delhi . Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General N.S. Raja Subramani addressed the participants in the inaugural session and delivered the keynote address. Organized under the aegis of Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff (HQ IDS), the four-week course will be attended by officers from the three services, as well as representatives from the government, defense industry, academia, and strategic organizations. Participants will deliberate on topics such as geopolitics, emerging technologies, cognitive and cyber warfare, multi-domain military operations, scenario building, and technology-enabled conflict.
Vice Admiral Manish Chadha is an alumnus of the 78th Course conducted at the National Defence Academy , Khadakwasla . He was commissioned into the Indian Navy on July 1, 1991. Vice Admiral Manish Chadha is a specialist in communications and electronic warfare. He is also an alumnus of the 61st Staff Course at the Defence Services Staff College, Wellington, and completed the Higher Command Course at the National Defence University, Washington, USA.
The Department of Posts released a commemorative postage stamp to mark the centenary of the late Shri Satish Gujral, renowned artist, architect, sculptor, and writer, at a special ceremony held at Bikaner House , New Delhi . The stamp was released by Shri Jyotiraditya M. Sinha, Union Minister of State for Communications and Development of North Eastern Region, accompanied by Shri Jitendra Gupta, Postmaster General (Director General Postal Services), Colonel Akhilesh Kumar Pandey, Chief Postmaster General, Delhi Circle, Padma Bhushan Shri Jatin Das, renowned Indian painter, sculptor, and sculptor, Dr. Rajiv Lochan, former Director of the National Gallery of Modern Art, Mrs. Rasil Gujral Ansal, members of the Gujral family, and other distinguished guests. The stamp features a printed portrait of the late Shri Satish Gujral seated and actively holding a paintbrush, symbolizing his lifelong dedication to art and creativity. The composition depicts him in a thoughtful pose, reflecting the depth and versatility of his artistic vision.
Willie Walsh took over as the new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of IndiGo on August 3. Willie’s full name is William Matthew Walsh . Walsh has been appointed after the resignation of IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers in March. Walsh started his career as a pilot in Aer Lingus in 1979. Walsh was in British Airways from 2005 to 2011 and later became the CEO of British Airways. Walsh was currently the Director General of the International Air Transport Association (IATA). Major airlines like Aero Lingus of Ireland, Iberia of Spain and Vueling of British come under IAG.
Uzbekistan’s Foreign Minister Bakhtiyar Saidov arrived on a visit to India on August 3. On the first day, Saidov met with President Draupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan . During his visit, he will hold bilateral talks with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar at Hyderabad House. The talks are expected to cover a wide range of key topics, including trade, investment, energy, connectivity, education, culture, and regional security. Saidov will also participate in a special business forum in the capital . During his visit, he will also meet with Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar at Hyderabad House and hold bilateral meetings aimed at deepening cooperation in the areas of trade, investment, energy, and security. The Protocol establishing diplomatic relations between India and Uzbekistan was signed on March 18, 1992. On May 27, India and Uzbekistan signed the Bilateral Market Access Protocol in connection with Uzbekistan’s accession to the World Trade Organization.
On August 3 , the Supreme Court ruled that partners in live -in relationships have the right to legal protection under the relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) ( formerly Section 498A of the Indian Penal Code) . Section 498A provides legal protection to married women against cruelty by their husbands or relatives. The court stated that the right to protection from cruelty should be available to everyone and should not be limited to marriage. According to Article 498A, any partner in a live-in relationship, whether male or female, has the full right to protection. The Supreme Court stated that women in live-in relationships can also receive protection from domestic violence and cruelty, provided the case meets legal standards. However, the court clarified that not only the name of the relationship but also its circumstances will be considered. Not every live-in relationship can be considered a relationship. To determine whether protection is granted, the court will consider the nature of the relationship, the duration, the living conditions, and other factors.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta inaugurated ‘ Arpan’, a used clothing donation center, at the Punjabi Bagh West Metro station. The initiative aims to encourage citizens to donate their old, usable clothes so they can be reused, recycled, and upcycled. ‘Arpan’ donation centers will be set up at 10 Delhi Metro stations, making it more convenient for citizens to participate.
The 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow concluded on August 3. India won a total of 39 medals , including 13 gold, 17 silver, and 9 bronze . India finished fourth in the medal tally . Australia came first with 171 medals, including 70 gold . England won a total of 110 medals , and Canada was third with 62. Boxing contributed the most to India’s 39 medals . Boxers won 10 medals, including 7 gold and 3 silver . This means that one in every four medals came from boxing. Athletics won 10 medals, but no gold medals. Weightlifting won 8, Para-Athletics 6, Judo 4, and Para-Powerlifting 1. Overall, 37 of the 39 medals came from just five sports. The closing ceremony took place on Sunday night. Afterward, Commonwealth Games President Dr. Donald Ruka handed over the torch to India, the host of the 2030 Games . Neeraj Chopra, Indian Olympic Association President PT Usha, and Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghvi were present during the event. This year, only 10 sports were included in Glasgow, while 19 were played in Birmingham. Sports like badminton, wrestling, shooting, hockey, table tennis, and cricket, which would have brought India 30 medals in 2022, were not part of the Glasgow Games. Furthermore, India sent a team of only 123 athletes instead of the planned 210. Of these, 38 returned with medals, meaning the success rate was 31%. In Birmingham, this figure was 29%.
