1 Gujarat city Ahmedabad will host Asian Weightlifting Championship 2026
Ahmedabad , the largest city in Gujarat , will host the upcoming 2026 edition of the annual Asian Weightlifting Championships from 1-10 April 2026. The Asian Weightlifting Federation, the sport’s governing body in Asia, announced this on 27 May 2025. Ahmedabad was not the original venue for the 2026 Asian Weightlifting Championships. Gandhinagar, the capital of Gujarat, was originally selected to host the 206th edition of the Asian Weightlifting Championships by the Asian Weightlifting Federation, to be held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan in 2024. But it was later moved to Ahmedabad. The 2025 Asian Weightlifting Championships was held in Jiangshan city of China.
2 Amity University Online signs an MoU with Hockey India to transform lives of athletes
In May 2025, Noida (Uttar Pradesh, UP) -based Amity University Online (AUO) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with New Delhi (Delhi)-based Hockey India , aimed at providing comprehensive educational opportunities to hockey players at the international, national and state levels . The MoU was signed by Hockey India Secretary General Bhola Nath Singh and AUO President Ajit Chauhan in the presence of Hockey India Treasurer Shekhar J Manoharan at Amity University in Noida, UP. During the event, women’s hockey team captain Salima Tete and defender Jyoti Singh were formally enrolled in AUO’s Sociology and Master of Business Administration (MBA) Marketing programmes respectively.
3 Increase in MSP for paddy, pulses and oilseeds ahead of Kharif season
The Cabinet ‘s Economic Affairs Committee on Wednesday approved the hike in the minimum support price (MSP) of 14 kharif crops for the 2025–26 marketing season . Among the crops that got the highest increase in MSP, niger seed (ramtil) got the biggest increase of ₹820 per quintal, followed by ragi by ₹596 per quintal, cotton by ₹589 per quintal and til (sesamum) by ₹579 per quintal. The MSP of common variety paddy has been increased by ₹69 to ₹2,369 per quintal. In the pulses category, the MSP of tur (arhar) has been increased by ₹450, moong by ₹86 and urad by ₹400 per quintal. In oilseeds, the support prices of groundnut, sunflower seed and soybean have been increased by ₹480, ₹441 and ₹436, respectively. The move is expected to help farmers get better prices and reduce dependence on imports. The increase is in line with the announcement in the Union Budget 2018-19 to fix the MSP at a minimum of 1.5 times the nationwide average cost of production.
4 Two Indian peacekeepers who lost their lives in UN mission will be honored posthumously
Two Indian peacekeepers who lost their lives last year while serving under the United Nations will be honoured posthumously. Brigadier General Amitabh Jha and Havildar Sanjay Singh will be awarded the Dag Hammarskjöld Medal posthumously at a ceremony to mark the International Day of UN Peacekeepers . India is the fourth largest contributor of uniformed personnel to UN peacekeeping operations. It has more than 5,300 military and police personnel deployed for UN peacekeeping operations in Abyei , Central African Republic . Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will also award the 2024 Military Gender Advocate of the Year to Squadron Leader Sharon Mwinsote Sime of Ghana and UN Woman Police Officer of the Year to Superintendent Zainab Gbla of Sierra Leone.
5 Gazette notification issued for rules under the Inter-Services Organisation-Command, Control and Discipline Act 2023
The government has issued a gazette notification for rules under the Inter-Services Organisation-Command , Control and Discipline Act 2023 for greater control efficiency in the armed forces . The Defence Ministry has said that it aims to promote effective command, control and efficient functioning of inter-service organisations and strengthen jointness among the armed forces. The ministry said that the newly notified subordinate rules framed under Section 11 of the Act are aimed at facilitating effective implementation of the provisions laid down in the law. These rules will also empower the heads of the organisations, enable speedy disposal of disciplinary cases and help avoid duplication of proceedings. The ministry said that the Act empowers the Commander-in-Chief and Officer-in-Command of the organisations to exercise command and control over the service personnel serving under them. The bill was passed by both the Houses of Parliament in the Monsoon Session in 2023. It received the President’s assent on August 15, 2023. The Act came into force from May 10 last year.
6 Aizawl: Fourth state capital of Northeast to be connected by rail network
Mizoram capital Aizawl has become the fourth state capital in the Northeast to be connected by rail network . It has become the fourth capital in the region to be connected to the national rail network of Indian Railways after Dispur (Assam), Itanagar (Arunachal Pradesh) and Naharlagun which is near Itanagar (Arunachal Pradesh). Four other states of the Northeast namely Gangtok (Sikkim), Imphal (Manipur), Kohima (Nagaland) and Shillong (Meghalaya) are still not connected by rail network. Indian Railways has launched the 51.38 km long Bairabi-Sairang rail project worth Rs 5,021.45 crore to connect Aizawl to the national rail network. The last railway line in the state was at Bairabi in Kolasib district which is just 1.5 km from the Assam border. The Bairabi-Sairang rail project connects Bairabi to Sairang. Sairang is considered a satellite town of Aizawl and is just 20 km from the state capital. The Northeast Frontier Railway successfully conducted a trial run on the Bairabi-Sairang rail track on 1 May 2025. The track is expected to be inaugurated on 17 June 2025 pending approval from the Railway Safety Commission.
7 Anil Kumble appointed as ambassador of Karnataka Forest Department
Taking a significant step towards promoting environmental awareness and conservation efforts , the Karnataka government has appointed former Indian cricket team captain Anil Kumble as the brand ambassador of the state forest department and wildlife conservation . Kumble is not only known for his achievements in cricket but also for his past contribution to environmental conservation. His appointment is considered an inspiring step towards increasing public participation to protect the state’s rich biodiversity. On 27 May 2025, the Karnataka Forest Department led by Environment Minister Ishwar B. Khandre appointed Anil Kumble as the official ambassador.
8 Government is going to create E-Hansa for training pilots
The Government of India is going to build indigenous electric aircraft for the training of upcoming pilots . Preparations for this have been started. India has started the development of its next generation electric trainer aircraft ‘ E-Hansa’ , which is an important milestone towards green aviation and indigenous aerospace technology . This two-seater aircraft is being developed by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research – National Aerospace Laboratories (CSIR-NAL) and its cost will be almost half compared to imported alternatives. This announcement was made by Union Minister of State for Science and Technology Dr. Jitendra Singh in a high-level review meeting on 27 May 2025.
9 Famous Nepali mountaineer Kami Rita has climbed Mount Everest 31 times
Renowned Nepali mountaineer Kami Rita Sherpa has once again created history by successfully climbing Mount Everest (Sagarmatha) for the 31st time . On 27 May 2025, he led a 22-member Indian Army expedition team to conquer the world’s highest peak through the traditional south-east ridge route. This achievement makes him more prestigious as the mountaineer who has climbed Mount Everest the most number of times.
10 Philippines offers visa-free entry to Indian tourists under new categories
In a significant move to boost tourism and strengthen bilateral ties , the Philippines has introduced visa-free entry for Indian nationals under two special categories . Under this arrangement, effective from May 2025, eligible Indian travellers can now travel to the Philippines without a visa for up to 14 or 30 days . The move is aimed at attracting Indian tourists especially those who are interested in exploring islands, beaches and cultural sites.
11 Union Minister of State L Murugan announced the release of postage stamp in honour of Raja Perasar Perumpidugu Mutharaiyar
On 23rd May 2025 , Union Minister of State (MoS) Loganathan Murugan , Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs (MPA) announced the release of a commemorative postage stamp in honour of Tamil King Perasar Perumpidugu Mutharaiyar at the 1,350th birth anniversary celebrations of the king at the Government Memorial Complex in Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu. The commemorative stamp will bear the image of King Perasar Perumpidugu Mutharaiyar. The stamp will be released in 2026. The Union Minister of State announced the upcoming construction of a Manimandapam (memorial hall) in honour of King Perasar Perumpidugu Mutharaiyar commemorating his legacy in Tamil history. In May 2025, the Department of Posts (DoP), Ministry of Communications in collaboration with the Tamil Nadu Forest Department (TNFD) released a special cover for the “Born to Fly” campaign as part of the International Day of Biodiversity 2025 (May 22) celebrations at the Head Post Office in Coimbatore, TN.

14 Former Union Minister Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa passes away
Senior Shiromani Akali Dal (Taksali) leader and former Union Minister Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa passed away on Wednesday. 89-year-old Dhindsa was ill for a long time and had also withdrawn from political activities to some extent. His death has sent a wave of mourning in Punjab politics. Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa’s political life was full of great dedication and simplicity. He was associated with the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) for a long time and was counted among the seniormost leaders of the party. Dhindsa won his first assembly election from Dhanaula in 1972. After this, he was elected MLA from Sunam in 1977, Sangrur in 1980 and again from Sunam in 1985. He had also played an important role as Minister of Chemicals and Fertilizers and Sports Minister in the government of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee . Many political leaders have expressed deep condolences on his demise.
