Recently the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has given new instructions regarding the storage of bank card data by entities or other merchants . It has directed that no entity or merchant other than the card issuer and the card network shall store the card details. This will reduce the fraud caused due to sharing of card details. From January 2022, no entity in the card transaction or payment chain will be required to store physical card data other than the card issuer and the card network. Any such data already stored will be deleted. It has also increased the tokenization of Card-on-File (CoF) by card issuers. This has allowed card issuers to provide card tokenization services as Token Service Providers (TSPs). TSPs will offer token facility only for cards issued or affiliated by them. Tokenization refers to the replacement of the actual card details with an optional code called a “token”, which will be unique to the combination of the card, token requester and device. Token access point-of-sale terminals,
