India ranks third globally in installed renewable energy capacity . According to a new Morgan Stanley report , India’s renewable energy transition will help reduce external dependence, but its success will depend on how rapidly the country produces key components such as solar cells, wafers, and polysilicon locally. According to data from the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, domestic solar module capacity is projected to increase from 38 gigawatts in March 2024 to 74 gigawatts in March 2025. Solar cell capacity is also projected to increase from 9 gigawatts to 25 gigawatts.
2 Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan inaugurated PMGSY-IV from Bherunda and gave a major gift worth thousands of crores of rupees to Madhya Pradesh.
Union Minister of Agriculture, Farmers Welfare and Rural Development, Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan, on Sunday, inaugurated PMGSY-IV at the Silver Jubilee celebrations marking the completion of 25 years of the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana ( PMGSY) in Bherunda, Sehore district , Madhya Pradesh, dedicating several major road, housing, and rural development initiatives to the state. Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav , Union Minister of State for Rural Development and Communications Dr. Chandrashekhar Pemmasani, Union Minister of State for Rural Development Shri Kamlesh Paswan, along with state ministers Shri Karan Singh Verma and MLAs were also present. At the event, major states that have performed exceptionally well under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) over the past 25 years were honored in various categories. In the category of completing the most road length under the scheme, Madhya Pradesh (90,766 km) was awarded first place, Rajasthan (75,868 km) second, and Uttar Pradesh (75,695 km) third. In the category of connecting the most habitations, Bihar (31,287) was ranked first, Madhya Pradesh (17,493) second, and Odisha (16,990) third. Gujarat (98.42 percent), Tamil Nadu (98.39 percent), and Haryana (97.92 percent) were recognized for maximum use of green technology. Uttar Pradesh (Rs. 654 crore), Bihar (Rs. 553 crore), and West Bengal (Rs. 497.62 crore) were recognized for outstanding performance in rural road maintenance. Madhya Pradesh was ranked first, Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu second, and Gujarat third for outstanding performance in quality control mechanisms. In the category of North-Eastern, Hilly States, and Union Territories, Assam (32,169 km), Himachal Pradesh (23,081 km), and Uttarakhand (21,874 km) were recognized for completing the most road length. Assam (13,720), Himachal Pradesh (2,556), and Odisha (2,132) were recognized for connecting the most habitations. Uttarakhand (75 percent), Assam (74 percent), and Meghalaya (71 percent) were recognized for maximizing the use of green technology.
3 India handed over the IUCAA flag to the South African Astronomical Observatory in Cape Town
India’s High Commissioner to South Africa , Prabhat Kumar, formally handed over the flag of India’s Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA) to the South African Astronomical Observatory (SAAO) at a ceremony held at the Royal Observatory in Cape Town . This marks the further strengthening of the long-standing scientific collaboration between the two countries. The Indian Ambassador, at the ceremony held earlier this week, praised SAAO’s exemplary research and said that the installation of the IUCAA flag symbolizes the Indian government’s priority to scientific research and innovation. Rosalind Skelton, Managing Director of SAAO, highlighted the SALT facility’s achievements over the past two decades, stating that they are currently developing a new camera detector and controller, which are expected to be installed on the telescope in the coming months, in collaboration with Indian partners.

Kawartah North Village Council in Mizoram has achieved the highest national ranking in the “ Clean and Green Panchayat ” category of the Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Panchayat Sustainable Development Awards 2025 in the field of sustainable rural development and environmental protection . This award from the Ministry of Panchayati Raj recognizes excellence in cleanliness, ecological balance, and community well-being.
On May 9 , the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) banned Olympic wrestler Vinesh Phogat from participating in domestic competitions until June 26. The WFI also issued a show-cause notice to Phogat , alleging indiscipline and violation of anti-doping rules . In the 15-page notice, the WFI stated that Vinesh failed to provide six months’ notice of her retirement, violating the WFI constitution, United World Wrestling (UWW) rules, and anti-doping provisions. Vinesh Phogat was disqualified for the Paris Olympics in August 2024 after being found overweight. She then announced her retirement from wrestling. Vinesh is the first Indian female wrestler to win gold medals at both the 2018 Asian Games and the Commonwealth Games. Vinesh represented India at the Olympics in 2016, 2020, and 2024.
7 National Technology Day
National Technology Day, celebrated annually on May 11th, symbolizes India’s inspiring saga of scientific prowess, technological self-reliance, and innovation. The nuclear tests (Pokhran-II) conducted on May 11th, 1998 , in Pokhran, Rajasthan , were a milestone in India’s history. These tests, conducted on May 11th and 13th, established India among nuclear-powered nations. This achievement was the result of completely indigenous technology and the tireless efforts of Indian scientists. Under the leadership of great scientists like Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam and Dr. R. Chidambaram, it was proven that India is technologically self-reliant and capable. On this day, the successful test of the “Trishul” missile and the first flight of the indigenous aircraft “Hansa-3” also testified to India’s multifaceted technological capabilities. In honor of these historic achievements, the Government of India declared May 11th as National Technology Day from 1999.

9 Former Minister D. Sudhakar passes away
Former Karnataka minister D. Sudhakar passed away on May 10. He was 65 years old. He served as a cabinet minister in the Karnataka government and represented the Hiriyur constituency in the Karnataka Legislative Assembly . D. Sudhakar was elected to the Karnataka Legislative Assembly (MLA) from the Challakere constituency in 2004. Sudhakar won the election from the Hiriyur constituency in 2008 and became a part of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly. Sudhakar was the Minister of Social Welfare in the B.S. Yeddyurappa-led government from 2008-2009. Sudhakar was the Minister of Youth Affairs in the Karnataka government from 2010 to 2011. Sudhakar held portfolios like Social Welfare, Youth Affairs and later Planning and Statistics in the Karnataka government.
