9 Testing the future climate in the Amazon rainforest

Deep in the Amazon rainforest  , a team of scientists is conducting a unique experiment aimed at understanding how  rising carbon dioxide (CO₂) levels will affect  the world’s largest  tropical forest . Six massive steel rings, each containing 50 to 70 mature trees, have been erected above the forest canopy. In three of these rings, scientists will release carbon dioxide gas corresponding to projected future CO₂ levels (2050–2060), while the remaining three rings will remain unchanged as control groups.
