1.World Bicycle Day: 3 June

World Bicycle Day is observed on June 3.The day is celebrated to lay emphasis on the benefits of cycling.Riding a bicycle is not only good for one’s health but is also good for the environment.As per the World Health Organization (WHO), safe infrastructure for walking and cycling is also a step towards achieving greater health equity.This is the third anniversary of World Bicycle Day, which was declared by the United Nations General Assembly in April 2018.

2.Tropical storm Amanda kills 20 in Central American countries

Tropical Storm Amanda has killed at least 20 people in Central America, most of whom in El Salvador.The storm had dumped the equivalent of “almost 10 percent” of the annual rainfall on the country in a relatively short space of time.The storm came as the country of some 6.6 million people is grappling with the impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

3.France assures timely delivery of Rafale aircraft to India

France reaffirmed its commitment to ensure timely delivery of Rafale Aircraft to India despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.The IAF is likely to get the delivery of the first batch of four Rafale jets from France by July-end.The four fighters were supposed to fly to their home base in India in May 2020, but the plan was delayed due to the Covid-19 outbreak.Dassault Aviation had handed over the first of 36 Rafale aircraft, which India had ordered in 2016, during a visit by Singh to France last year.India had signed an inter-governmental agreement with France in September 2016 for procurement of 36 Rafale fighter jets at a cost of around ₹58,000 crore.

4.Indian Energy Exchange launches real-time electricity market

Energy trading platform Indian Energy Exchange launched the real-time electricity market (RTM) on its platform.The RTM enables consumers, including distribution companies (discoms) and captive users, to buy power on exchanges just an hour before delivery.There will be 48 auction sessions during the day with delivery of power within one hour of closure of the bid session.

5.Delhi CM launches app to help track hospital beds, ventilators for COVID-19 patients

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal launched a ‘Delhi Corona App’ for people to give accurate information about beds and ventilators availability in city’s hospitals.This app will be updated two times in a day.On Delhi’s preparedness to deal with the Coronavirus, he said, it is a matter of concern that cases in Delhi are rising but there are sufficient arrangements of beds, ICU and oxygen to deal with this infectious disease and people need not to worry.

6.Arunachal plans tap connections for all households by March 2023

The annual action plan of Arunachal Pradesh to achieve 100 per cent household tap connections in the state was approved by the National Jal Jeevan Mission of the Union ministry of Jal Shakti.The state had proposed to provide 100 per cent tap connections to all the households by March, 2023.The Centre has approved Rs 255 crore for the state under Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) in 2020-21.Water availability in Arunachal Pradesh is not an issue, but its mountainous terrain, sparsely located habitations and harsh climatic conditions pose challenges in implementation.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the Silver Jubilee celebrations of Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences based in Bengaluru.Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS) is a public, affiliated university in Bangalore. It is the largest health sciences university in India.It was set up in 1996 by the government of Karnataka for the regulation and promotion of higher education in health sciences throughout the state of Karnataka.RGUHS is a member of Association of Commonwealth Universities, UK.

8.Report on restructuring of the film sector submitted to I&B minister

An Expert Committees on Rationalisation of Film Media Units and Review of Autonomous Bodies submitted its report to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. The Committee was chaired by Bimal Julka.It has suggested an umbrella configuration with 4 broad verticals under which institutes should work. They are – Production, Festival, Heritage and Knowledge.It has recommended that these verticals be headed by professionals.It has also recommended creation of a Film Promotion Fund for independent filmmakers for making commercial films.Bimal Julka is the Chief Information Commissioner (CIC) of India.

9.Gaitri Kumar appointed India”s next High Commissioner to the UK

Seasoned diplomat Gaitri Kumar has been appointed as India”s next High Commissioner to the United Kingdom.Kumar, a 1986-batch Indian Foreign Service officer, succeeds Ruchi Ghanashyam.At present, Kumar is serving as Indian Ambassador to Belgium, Luxembourg and the European Union.Her appointment to the high-profile post comes at a time India is looking at further expanding ties with the UK after it came out of the powerful European Union.

10.Adesh Kumar Gupta replaces Manoj Tiwari as Delhi BJP chief

BJP President J P Nadda has appointed former mayor of the North Delhi Municipal Corporation Adesh Kumar Gupta as the new Chief of party’s Delhi Unit replacing Manoj Tiwari.Mr Tiwari had been appointed as the BJP Delhi Unit Chief in 2016.Besides, Mr Nadda also named former Union Minister Vishnu Deo Sai as its Chhattisgarh State President and S Tikendra Singh as its Manipur State Chief.

11.Kiren Rijiju, Arjun Munda inaugurate Khelo India e-Pathshala programme

Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju and Tribal Affairs Minister Arjun Munda inaugurated Khelo India e-Pathshala programme with a webinar, attended by young archers, archery coaches and experts of the discipline from across the country.The e-pathshala aims to provide online coaching and education to athletes living in far-off areas.The programme was launched by the Sports Authority of India (SAI), in association with National Sporting Federations (NSFs).The unique programme will connect athletes from secluded areas of India, who may not always have access to established players and coaches.The e-learning programme will cover 21 sporting disciplines, including, athletics, archery, boxing, cycling, fencing, football, gymnastics, hockey, judo, kayaking & canoeing, kabaddi, para games, rowing, shooting, taekwondo, table tennis, volleyball, weightlifting, wrestling and wushu.
