1.India was re-elected to the UN Human Rights Council with a huge majority for a record sixth term

UN Human Rights Council for India’s record sixth termhas been elected by an overwhelming majority. The Permanent Indian Mission to the United Nations said that India is committed to working together with other members of the Council for the protection and promotion of human rights. The Mission expressed its gratitude to other UN member states for reposing faith in India and said that it will continue to work for the promotion and protection of human rights through respect, dialogue and cooperation. The meeting was held for 18 new members of the United Nations Human Rights Council. These new members will serve for a period of three years starting from January, 2022. India secured its election by 184 votes in the 193-member assembly. The current term of India will end on 31 December 2021. There were five vacant seats in the Asia-Pacific states category for elections for the period 2022–2024, namely Kazakhstan, Malaysia, India, Qatar and United Arab Emirates. The 193-member General Assembly elected Argentina, Cameroon, Benin, Finland, Eritrea, Honduras, Gambia, Lithuania, India, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Luxembourg, Montenegro, Qatar, Paraguay, UAE, Somalia and the United States by secret ballot for the term 2022-2024 . The members of the council will serve for a term of three years. He shall not be eligible for immediate re-election after two consecutive terms.

2.India and US commit to raise $100 billion every year to tackle climate change

India and the US have reiterated their commitment to raise $100 billion annually with the help of public and private sector to tackle climate change . The climate crisis was discussed prominently at the India-US Economic and Financial Partnership meeting chaired by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen . A statement issued after the meeting said that the first session of the meeting focused on mobilizing economic resources to deal with climate change. The India-US Economic and Financial Partnership was launched in 2010 with the aim of strengthening economic ties between the two countries.

3.PLI scheme launched for telecom products

State Communications Minister Devsinh Chouhan launched a Production Linked Incentive Scheme (PLI Scheme) for telecom and networking products on October 14, 2021 . The PLI scheme was launched in the telecom sector to realize the Prime Minister’s vision of a self-reliant India. The scheme will help in reducing India’s dependence on other countries for import of telecom and networking products. The PLI scheme in the telecom sector is being launched by the Department of Telecommunications with an aim to promote domestic manufacturing of telecom and networking products. Manufacturing will be promoted by promoting incremental investment and turnover. This scheme is Rs 12,195 crore.was started with a total outlay of Rs. This scheme is effective from 1st April, 2021. Investments made by successful applicants in India between April 1, 2021 and FY 2024-25 will be eligible. The assistance under this scheme will be provided for a period of five years (FY 2021-22 to FY 2025-26).

The Union Environment Ministry has issued a draft notification to regulate the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) under the “ Plastic Waste Management Rules 2016 ” . The draft provides that the quantum of waste will have to be managed by producers, brand owners and importers who generate plastic packaging waste across India. When the draft notification is passed, it will come into effect immediately. EPR means the responsibility of the manufacturer for environmentally friendly management till the end of the life of the product and plastic packaging. People and stakeholders can submit objections or suggestions on the draft to the Environment Ministry within 60 days.

7.Second phase of maritime exercise ‘Malabar’

Indian Navy along with Royal Australian Navy (RAN) , Japan Maritime Self Defense Force (JMSDF) and United States Navy (USN) participated in the second phase of multilateral maritime exercise named “ Exercise Malabar ”. The Malabar exercise was conducted in the Bay of Bengal from 12 October to 15 October 2021. This is the second phase of the Malabar practice. The first phase of the exercise was conducted in the Philippines Sea from 26-29 August 2021. The exercise will focus on advanced surface and anti-submarine warfare exercises, weapon firing and seamanship development. In this maritime exercise, INS Rannvijay, INS Satpura as well as P8I Long Range Maritime Patrol aircraft of the Indian Navy participated.

8.New rules to allow abortion up to 24 weeks

The government has included new rules under the Medical Termination of Pregnancy (Amendment) Act, 2021 . Under the new rules, the gestational limit for termination of pregnancy for exceptional categories of women in India has been increased from 20 to 24 weeks. has been done. Women for whom the limit has been raised include – minors; Victims of sexual assault, rape or incest; Physically handicapped and and whose marital status changes during pregnancy. This also includes cases of fetal malformations. Earlier, a doctor’s opinion was required for abortion up to 12 weeks of pregnancy. For an abortion between 12 and 20 weeks, two doctors had to be consulted. Under the new rules, State-level medical boards will be set up which will decide whether a pregnancy can be terminated after 24 weeks in cases of fetal malformation. The Board shall examine the woman and her report and then accept or reject the proposal for medical termination of pregnancy. This process will be completed within three days of receipt of the request. The board will also ensure that the abortion process is done with all precautions along with counseling. The request for the same will be processed within five days of receipt.
