Pakistan has topped the Global Terrorism Index for the first time . Terrorism-related deaths in Pakistan increased by 6 percent last year. According to the Global Terrorism Index 2026 , published by the Institute for Economics and Peace , terrorism-related deaths in Pakistan are at their highest level since 2013. In 2025, the country recorded 1,139 terrorist deaths and 1,045 incidents , reflecting a deteriorating security situation. The report, which assesses the impact of terrorism in 163 countries, states that Pakistan’s strained relations with its neighbors, particularly Afghanistan, and increasing violence in the country pose significant security risks. In 2025, Pakistan became the sixth consecutive country to record an increase in deaths from terrorism. Furthermore, hostage-taking incidents in the country have also increased, with the number of victims increasing from 101 in 2024 to 655 in 2025. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan provinces remain the biggest threats to internal security in Pakistan. Last year, these two provinces accounted for more than 74 percent of all terrorist attacks and 67 percent of all deaths in the country.
