6 IIT Bombay develops India’s first quantum diamond microscope

Under  the Department of Science and Technology  ‘s  (DST) National Quantum Mission (NQM) ,  the P-Quest group  at   IIT Bombay  has developed   India’s first indigenous quantum diamond microscope (QDM)  for dynamic magnetic field imaging . This breakthrough represents a milestone in quantum sensing  and has earned India its first patent in this field. The technology was formally announced during the recently concluded  Emerging Science, Technology and Innovation Conclave (ESTIC 2025)  . This instrument has the potential to transform neuroscience and materials research, and also opens new possibilities for non-destructive analysis of semiconductor chips, as it is capable of mapping magnetic fields in 3D layers of an encapsulated chip. Developed under the leadership of Prof. Kasturi Saha, this QDM technology is based on nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers present in diamond, providing a powerful platform for imaging three-dimensional magnetic fields at the nanoscale. NV centers—atomic-scale defects formed by the combination of nitrogen atoms and vacancies in a diamond crystal—retain their quantum coherence even at room temperature. They are extremely sensitive to magnetic, electrical, and thermal changes. Their spin-based fluorescence, via optically detected magnetic resonance (ODMR), provides precise readings of the local magnetic field.
