1.Los Angeles approves host city contract for 2028 Games :-

Los Angeles city council rubber-stamped the host city contract today, paving the way for bringing the 2028 Summer Olympics to southern California and ceding the 2024 Games to Paris.

The members voted 12-0 in favour of signing off on the memorandum of understanding and host city contract documents which would see the city host the Summer Games for the third time in history.

The official symbol of the modern Games is five interlocking colored rings, representing the continents of North and South America, Asia, Africa, Europe and Australia.

2.Maheshwari bags memorable bronze at Asian Shotgun Championship :-

Shooter Maheshwari Chauhan bagged a bronze medal at the Asian Shotgun Championship to earn India’s first women’s skeet individual medal at a top international competition in Astana.

India’s tally now stands at two gold, silver and three bronze medals.

About Asian Shotgun Championship:-

The Asian Shooting Championships are governed by the Asian Shooting Confederation. Asian Shooting Championships began in 1967.

7th Asian Shotgun Championship 2017 is hosted by Astana, Kazakhstan.

3.India drop place to 97th in FIFA rankings :-

India dropped a place in the latest FIFA rankings released to stand at number 97.

In July, India had reached their best FIFA ranking in the last 21 years as they stood at 96, the second highest ranking for the country ever. India currently stands at 341 points on the 97th position, four points behind 96th placed Zambia.

The team has progressed brilliantly under the English manager Constantine, who started coaching the team when it was ranked 171st in the world.

India will now play a three-nation tournament with Mauritius and St. Kitts and Nevis at the Jawaharlal Nehru stadium in Chennai from August 19th to 27th.

4.President of India to address the nation on the eve of Independence Day 2017 :-

The President of India, Shri Ram Nath Kovind will address the nation (August 14, 2017) on the eve of the 71st Independence Day.

The address will be broadcast from 1900 hrs. on the entire national network of All India Radio (AIR) and telecast over all channels of Doordarshan in Hindi followed by the English version. Broadcast of the address in Hindi and English on Doordarshan will be followed by broadcast in regional languages by regional channels of Doordarshan. AIR will broadcast regional language versions from 2000 hrs. onwards on its respective regional networks.

 

5.Shri Thaawarchand Gehlot Inaugurates ‘Inclusive Independence Day Celebrations of National Trust’ :-

Shri Thaawarchand Gehlot, Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment inaugurated the ‘Inclusive Independence Day celebrations’ organised by the National Trust here today.

Minister of State for Social Justice & Empowerment Shri Krishna Pal Gurjar also graced the occasion. Smt. Meenakshi Lekhi, Member of Parliament, New Delhi and Shri K K Sharma, Director General, Border Security Force were the Guests of Honour.

 

6.So far 81 lakh basis cards have been deactivated: Government :-

The Indian Unique Identification Authority has so far diverted about 81 lakh base numbers. This information was given by Minister of State for Electronics and IT P.P. Chaudhary. Aadhaar number has been disabled on the basis of various reasons mentioned in Section 27 and 28 of the Aadhaar (Enrollment and Updates) Regulation, 2016.

Chaudhary said, “Before the implementation of the Aadhaar Act 2016, the Aadhaar numbers were diverted as per the basis of Life Life Cycle Management (LCM) Guidelines.” He said that the regional offices of UIDAI have the right to deactivate the Aadhaar number.

 

7.The meeting convened by the Bank Association to abate 22nd strike on August 22 :-

In an effort to stop the strike of nationwide bankers on August 22, the Indian Banks’ Association (IBA) and the Chief Labor Commissioner have called the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) for talks. This information has been given by a top leader of the All India Bank Employees Union (AIBEA).

AIBEA General Secretary CH Venkatachalam said, “IBA has called UFBU for a meeting in Mumbai on August 16 and the Chief Labor Commissioner has called us for a meeting on August 18 in New Delhi.”

 

8.Indian team’s announcement for Twenty20 and ODI series against Sri Lanka, UV found :-

The Indian team was announced for the T20 and five ODIs against Sri Lanka. Under the leadership of captain Virat Kohli, the Indian team will start the one-day series against Sri Lanka from August 20. Yuvraj Singh has not been given place in the team as well as R. Ashwin has also been rested.

It was also expected that Suresh Raina could be included in the team but it did not happen. Emerging batsman Rishabh Pant could not succeed in making the Indian team against Sri Lanka.

Against Sri Lanka, spin all-rounder Akshar Patel has been given the place in the Indian team and Yuswendra Chahal has also got an opportunity.

 

9.Iran to launch its missile development program again :-

The Parliament of Iran approved the amount of $ 52 million on Sunday for foreign missions of the country’s missile development program and Revolutionary Guard.

Parliament has recently sanctioned this money in response to the economic sanctions imposed by the United States. As a result, Iran’s nuclear deal with the big countries has now become in danger. According to this agreement, Iran had to stop the missile tests and to make limited amounts of uranium enrichment.

Since Donald Trump became President of the United States and Iran, the relationship has constantly deteriorated. Trump was telling the agreement with Iran since the elections. Recently, the US has banned Russia, Iran and North Korea.

 

10.Thespian Shobha Sen passes away :-

One of the foremost theatre personalities of Bengal, actor and director Shobha Sen, died in Kolkata on Sunday. She was 93.

Sen was associated with the Leftist theatre movement led by the Indian People’s Theatre Association (IPTA) since the early 1940s at both the State and national level. Her acting career spanned over five decades.

She worked in some path-breaking productions from Bengal, including Nabanna (New Harvest) by playwright Bijon Bhattacharya.
