1 IUCN gives “Good” rank to Kanchenjunga National Park

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has ranked Kanchenjunga National Park  ” Good ” in its latest global review of   natural  World Heritage sites , meaning its  conservation status  is good. Kanchenjunga is  the only Indian park to receive this ranking  , while  other important areas such as the Western Ghats and the Sundarbans  face serious concerns. Officially known as the Kanchenjunga Biosphere Reserve, it is India’s first  “mixed” UNESCO World Heritage Site  . This recognition was granted in 2016 for its combination of both natural beauty and cultural significance. Spread over 1,784 square kilometers and rising to 8,586 meters, Kanchenjunga is the world’s third highest peak. The park is home to 280 glaciers, over 70 glacial lakes, and a rich diversity of wildlife, including snow leopards, clouded leopards, red pandas, blue sheep, Himalayan tahrs, and over 550 bird species, such as the Impeyan pheasant and satyr tragopan. The park also holds cultural significance for the local people. For the Lepcha tribes, it is Mayel Lhaang, meaning they consider it a sacred land given by their gods. Tibetan Buddhists consider it a sacred valley, and ancient monasteries like Tholung preserve spiritual traditions. In 2018, the Kanchenjunga Biosphere Reserve was expanded, connecting the core protected areas with a buffer zone where villagers practice sustainable farming and harvesting. This demonstrates that nature and community can thrive together.
