6 New smart sensor developed to adjust drug dosage in Parkinson’s disease

Scientists  have developed  an affordable, user-friendly, portable smartphonebased fluorescence turn-on sensor system that  can help in the prevention of  Parkinson’s disease . This sensor  will help in accurately detecting  the concentration of L-dopa in the body, thereby  helping in  determining the exact dosage required for effective prevention of the disease. Parkinson’s disease  is characterised by a  steady decline in neuron cells . This leads to a significant decrease in the levels of dopamine (neurotransmitter) in our body  . L-dopa is a chemical that gets converted into dopamine in our body, hence it acts as anti-Parkinson’s drugs. It helps in replenishing the lack of dopamine. As long as the body is given the right amount of L-dopa, the disease remains under control. However, due to the progressive nature of Parkinson’s, as the patient grows older, more L-dopa is required to replenish the continued loss of neurons. However, excessive doses of L-DOPA can also cause serious side effects in the patient such as dyskinesia, gastritis, psychosis, paranoia, and orthostatic hypotension, while very low doses of L-DOPA can cause relapse of Parkinson’s symptoms.
