1 Justice B.R. Gavai will be the next Chief Justice of the country, will take charge from May 14

The Central government  on Tuesday said that  Supreme Court judge B.R. Gavai  has   been appointed as  the next Chief Justice of India (CJI) . ” In exercise of the powers conferred under  Article 124(2)  of the Constitution of India, the President has appointed Justice Bhushan Ramakrishna Gavai  as  the Chief Justice of India with effect from May 14, 2025  ,” a notification from the Ministry of Law and Justice said. Current Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna is retiring on May 13 on attaining the age of 65 years. He had earlier this month recommended Justice Gavai as his successor. Justice Gavai will be the 52nd Chief Justice of the country. His term will be over six months and he will retire on November 23, 2025. Justice Gavai was appointed as a judge of the Supreme Court on May 29, 2019. He became an additional judge of the Bombay High Court in November 2003 and was appointed as a permanent judge in November 2005.

5 Joshua Cheptegei and Sarah Chelangat win TCS World 10K Bengaluru 2025

Ugandan  pair   of  Joshua Cheptegei  and  Sarah Chelangat  won  the International Elite Men’s and Women’s category  of  the 17th TCS World 10K Bengaluru 2025 race respectively. Abhishek Pal and Sanjivani Jadhav won  the Indian Elite Men’s and Women’s  race   of the TCS World 10K Bengaluru 2025 respectively.  The TCS World 10K Bengaluru 2025, with a  prize money of $2,10,000, was held on April 27, 2025 in Bengaluru, Karnataka  . The event, held in Bengaluru, was part of the World Athletics Label Road Race. World Athletics is the world governing body of athletics. The Bengaluru race had two categories: an International Elite and an Indian Elite category.

6 Udan Yojana: Connecting India with one flight at a time

Regional Connectivity Scheme- Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik (RCS-UDAN) , is a flagship initiative of the Government of India (GoI),  launched on   October 21, 2016 , aimed at democratizing aviation by making flying accessible and affordable for all. The scheme  is being implemented by  the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) . The first RCS-UDAN flight was inaugurated by  Prime Minister (PM)  Narendra Modi on April 27, 2017  , connecting  Shimla (Himachal Pradesh, HP) to New Delhi (Delhi).  . RC-UDAN is a key component of India’s National Civil Aviation Policy (NCAP) 2016, which has a 10-year vision to connect tier-2 and tier-3 cities through a market-driven but financially supported model. The scheme works on a market-driven approach, where airlines assess demand on specific routes and submit proposals during a bidding round. So far, 625 routes have been operationalised under the scheme, connecting 90 airports (including 15 heliports and 2 water aerodromes) across the country.

7 Madhya Pradesh gets approval for India’s first PM Mitra Textile Park project worth Rs 2,100 crore

In April 2025,  Madhya Pradesh  (MP) has officially  received approval from  the Ministry of Textiles (MoT)  for   the Pradhan Mantri Mega Integrated Textile Region and Apparel (PM-MITRA) Park project worth   Rs 2,100 crore . This will be the first state-of-the-art integrated textile park of its kind in India  . This newly approved project is expected to enhance the industrial scenario of the state and strengthen India’s textile sector on the global platform. The state government of Madhya Pradesh has already received investment proposals worth Rs 10,000 crore, indicating strong interest from the industrial sector.

8 India launches first indigenous HPV test kit to detect cervical cancer

In April 2025, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge)  Jitendra Singh  Minister of State for Science and Technology (MoS&T)  launched  its first made-in-India human papilloma virus (HPV) test kits for screening   cervical cancer  . The two kits are TrueNat HPV-HR Plus  by  Goa-based MolBio Diagnostics  and  Patho Detect  by  Pune (Maharashtra)  -based  Mylab Discovery Solutions . The kits were developed under the Grand Challenges India (GCI) initiative of the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Ministry of Science and Technology (MoS&T), coordinated by the Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC).

9 Humanitarian Madhusudan Sai awarded Fiji’s highest honour

On 25th April 2025  , Indian spiritual and humanitarian leader  Sri Madhusudan Sai  was  conferred   the country’s highest civilian award ‘ Companion of the Order of Fiji ‘ by Fiji President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu  at  the State House of Fiji  in  Suva, Fiji . Previous recipients of the ‘Companion of the Order of Fiji’ include Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi in 2023  and  President of India Draupadi Murmu in 2024   He was honoured for his significant contribution to healthcare and social welfare in Fiji through the Sri Sathya Sai Sanjivani Children’s Hospital, the South Pacific region’s first state-of-the-art, completely free children’s hospital, which focuses on treating children from any background. He founded the global humanitarian mission ‘One World One Family’, which works in over 80 countries to improve access to healthcare, nutrition and education.

10 Sarvam AI will create India’s first indigenous large language model

 The Government  of India has selected   Bengaluru  -based startup  Sarvam AI  to develop India’s first foundational large language model (LLM)   under  the India AI Mission . Sarvam AI has been selected from among 67 applications received by the Government of India to develop the country’s first large language model  . The Government of India’s effort to develop indigenous LLM  comes in the backdrop of the success of Chinese startup DeepSeek  . The government has given Sarvam AI six months to develop the LLM model. This LLM model will be built in India using local infrastructure and engineers. It will use huge data from various Indian languages ​​and cultures. The LLM developed by Sarvam will handle voice-based tasks in Indian languages ​​and excel in advanced reasoning. The model developed by Sarvam AI will have 70 billion parameters and will include many innovations in programming as well as engineering. This model   is expected to be as good as Open AI’s Chat GPT-3 and GPT-4Meta’s Llama model, etc.
