1. PM inaugurates National Youth Festival in Hubballi, Karnataka

3. FSSAI notifies comprehensive regulatory standards for Basmati rice for the first time

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India-FSSAI has approved basmati rice for the first time.have notified broad regulatory standards for These standards will come into effect from August 1 this year. The health ministry has said that the objective is to promote fair practices in trade of basmati rice and to protect consumer interest both domestically and globally. As per these standards, basmati rice should have natural aroma and should be free from artificial colours, polishing agents and artificial fragrances. The quality of basmati rice has also been fixed under the standards, under which its average size, maximum limit of moisture and uric acid and condition of spoilage have been fixed. Basmati rice is an improved variety of rice grown in the foothills of the Himalayan region of the Indian sub-continent and has a wide domestic and global consumption. India accounts for two-thirds of the global supply of basmati rice.

15. Researchers discover white tufted royal butterfly in Kerala’s Kannur

Recently a team of butterfly observers and researchers has discovered a rare butterfly species White Tufted Royal Butterfly in Kannur, Kerala , which was first seen in the year 2017 in Agasthyakoodam and in the year 2018 in Shendurni Wildlife Sanctuary. This butterfly is protected under Schedule 2 of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972 . Butterflies are insects belonging to the order Lepidoptera of the Arthropoda phylum, which also includes moths. Adult butterflies have large and often brightly colored wings. Recently a Himalayan butterfly popularly known as ‘Golden Birdwing’ (Troides aix) has been discovered as the largest butterfly of India after 88 years.

16. The Godavari estuary in Andhra Pradesh is a prime and safe haven for Indian skimmers

According to the recently launched Asian Waterfowl Census, 2023 (recommended period 7- 22 January for AWC), the Godavari estuary in Andhra Pradesh has become a major and protected habitat for the Indian skimmer (Rynchops albicollis). About 250 Indian skimmers were sighted in the Coringa Wildlife Sanctuary . Another common name for Indian skimmer is Indian Scissors Bill. Indian skimmers are found along the western and eastern coastal estuaries of India. They spread over vast areas in winter. This species can be seen in central India near the Chambal River, parts of Odisha and Andhra Pradesh.

17. CMPDIL invents new dust control technology

In order to reduce and control fugitive dust in mining areas, Central Mine Planning and Design Institute Limited (CMPDIL), Ranchi (a consultant subsidiary of Coal India Limited) has developed systems for generation and control of fugitive dust. Invented the method and got the patent in December, 2022 (Patent No. 416055). This system can be used in mines, thermal power plants, railway sidings, ports, construction sites where coal and other minerals and fugitive materials are stored in the open. This system will reduce noise in addition to reducing dust generation from open sources. Present invention to reduce the production and dispersion of airborne dustRelates to synchronized application of Windbreak (WB) and Vertical Greenery System (VGS) . The WB and VGS are drawn in the upward and downward directions with respect to the sources of airborne dust, respectively. The WB reduces the speed of the oncoming wind towards the source and hence reduces the intensity of the ambient wind to lift the dust over the source. The VGS acts like a filter and reduces the amount of residual dust carried along with the air towards the receptors in the downward direction. Hence there is a reduction in the dust deposition in the ambient air as well as on the various receptors located in the downwind direction.

Bihar government has started caste survey in different parts of the state on 7th January . Chief Minister Nitish Kumar clarified that castes will be listed along with the economic status of each family and not sub-castes.
