1 Krishna Jaishankar became the first Indian woman to set a new record at the 2025 Mountain West Indoor Track and Field Championships

Krishna Jaishankar of India   became the first Indian woman to set a new record at  the 2025 Mountain West Indoor Track and Field Championships .  She  achieved a mark of  16.03 meters in the indoor shot put . The 22-year-old Krishna broke the previous Indian indoor record of 15.54 meters. Poornarao Rane set this record at the 2023 American Athletic Conference Indoor Championships. Krishna Jaishankar was in fourth place before the final round. She  won  the bronze medal  with her final throw  . Maya Lessner of the USA  won the gold medal while her compatriot Gabby Mournes won the silver medal. Krishna’s previous best indoor throw was 15.03 meters, which was recorded at the same venue last month. India’s  overall women’s shot put record  remains 18.41 meters .

2 Yamandu Orsi becomes the new President of Uruguay

On March 1,  Yamandu  Orsi was sworn in as  the new President of  the South American country  Uruguay  . Yamandu Orsi is the leader of Uruguay’s leftist coalition Broad Front  . He   defeated opposition candidate Alvaro Delgado in the elections.

3 Oscars 2025: Adrian Brody won Best Actor, Mickey Madison won Best Actress

The stars of ‘ The Brutalist ‘ are shining bright  in the 97th Oscar Awards . The film ‘The Brutalist’, which was nominated in 10 categories,  won the Best Actor (Adrien Brody)  award.  Mickey Madison won the Best Actress  award for   the film ‘ Anora ‘ . Oscar winners have been announced in 23 categories.  The film Anora won the maximum of 5 awards  in  the Best Picture, Best Direction, Best Screenplay, Best Editing, Best Actress categories . The Brutalist came  second  with 3 awards  . Brady Corbett is the producer-director of ‘The Brutalist’. The Brutalist tells the story of an architect Laszlo Toth, who tries to manage his career and marriage and for this he goes to America. Actors like Adrian Brody, Felicity Jones, Guy Pearce and Joe Alwyn are in important roles in the film. Anora is a film directed by Sean Baker, which is based on the marriage of a sex worker. In the 97th Academy Awards, the film ‘Anuja’, which was nominated from India in the short film category, missed out on winning the award. The film ‘I am not a robot’ won in this category. Dutch filmmaker Victoria Warmerdam and producer Trent’s film ‘I am not a robot’ broke Anuja’s dream by winning the Best Live Action Short award. The Oscars were hosted by comedian Conan O’Brien this time. The awards were held on 2 March 2025 at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles. During this,  Zoe Saldana  won the Oscar title for Best Supporting Actress for the film Emilia Perez.  Kieran Culkin was given the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for A Real Pain.

4 Government gave Navratna status to IRCTC

The government   has given  Navratna status  to  Indian Railway Finance Corporation and Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation-IRCTC. Railway Finance Corporation is a Central Public Sector Enterprise of  the Ministry of Railways  . Its annual turnover is more than Rs 26 thousand crore. IRCTC  is also a Central Public Sector Enterprise of the Ministry of Railways and its annual turnover is more than Rs four thousand crore. With this,  all the seven Railway Central Public Sector Enterprises  have got Navratna status. The other five enterprises getting Navratna status   are CONCOR, RVNL, IRCON, RITES and RailTel .

5 India and Nepal signed a MoU in New Delhi to enhance cooperation in water sanitation, waste management and health sector

India and Nepal  signed  a Memorandum of Understanding in New Delhi   to enhance cooperation in  the field of water sanitation, waste management and wellness . The primary agenda of the MoU is to promote cooperation between the two countries and strengthen inter-governmental cooperation in the field of water, sanitation and wellness. This MoU adds a new chapter to the India-Nepal partnership, ensuring that both countries work together for the well-being of their people and a better future.

6 Jammu and Kashmir: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah launches official website for ‘Khelo India Winter Games 2025’

 In  Jammu and Kashmir, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah  launched the official website for  Khelo India Winter Games 2025  at the Civil Secretariat in Jammu  . The Chief Minister inquired about the preparations for the event and finalization of the dates and wished the organizers all the best. Jammu and Kashmir Sports Council Secretary Nuzhat Gul said that Khelo India Winter Games 2025  will be held  in  Gulmarg from March 9 to 12 .

7 Gujarat leads the country with 19,020 hectares of mangrove plantation in two years under ‘Mishti’ scheme

 In  February 2025 , Gujarat  emerged as the national leader in mangrove afforestation   by  planting mangroves in about 19,020 hectares at a cost of over Rs 76 crore under the Gujarat Mangrove Initiative . With the vision of ‘ Developed Gujarat to Developed India ‘, Gujarat is determined to conserve the environment. This determination has put Gujarat at the leading edge of the implementation of the Central Government’s  Mishti Yojana  . Gujarat’s mangrove environment is strategically located, with Kutch leading the way with 799 square kilometres (sq km).  In 2023 , the Government of India (GOI) launched the Mishti Yojana on the occasion of World Environment Day (June 5)  to increase mangrove forests in coastal states and union territories (UTs)  , ensuring a sustainable future for both communities and ecosystems.

8 TRIFED signs MoU with NIFT and HPMC to promote tribal entrepreneurship

In February 2025,  New Delhi (Delhi)  based  Tribal Cooperative Marketing Development Federation Limited (TRIFED)   under  Ministry of Tribal Affairs (MoTA) has signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with New Delhi based  National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT)  and  Shimla  (Himachal Pradesh, HP) based Himachal Pradesh Horticultural Produce Marketing and Processing Corporation (HPMC) to promote tribal businesses  . The MoUs were signed during the flagship event ‘Aadi Mahotsav’ held in New Delhi, Delhi from 16th to 24th February 2025. The MoU between TRIFED and NIFT was signed and exchanged between Sandeep Pehelwan, General Manager (GM), TRIFED and Gaurav Mishra, Director Headquarters, NIFT. The MoU between TRIFED and HPMC was signed and exchanged between Mamta Sharma, GM, TRIFED and Sunny Sharma, GM, HPMC.

9 World Wildlife Day

On 20 December 2013   , at the 68th session of  the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) , 3 March was declared  as  the UN World Wildlife Day (WWD)  . The day is important because on this day in 1973, the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) was signed. The UNGA resolution designated the CITES Secretariat as the facilitator for the global observance of this special day for wildlife on the UN calendar. The UN World Wildlife Day has now become a global annual event dedicated to wildlife. In the year 2025, World Wildlife Day will be  celebrated under the important theme of “ Wildlife Conservation Finance: Investing in People and Planet  ”.
