List of International Sports Events Hosted by India
India has played host for several sporting mega events including cricket world cups and Commonwealth Games. But the year 2017 has brought India to the limelight as they hosted the FIFA U-17 World Cup. In the previous decades, India was seen as a nation with poor quality of grounds and under developed infrastructure. However, with the successful hosting of FIFA U-17 World Cup, India has proved to the world that it has the capability to set high standards of quality.
Cricket World Cups in India :-
- In India, cricket is the most popular sport and hosting a Cricket World Cup could not be ruled out. In fact, India has hosted the ICC Men’s World Cup for three years (1987, 1996 and 2011).
- The 1987 World Cup was also called as the Reliance Cup and was jointly held in India and Pakistan. Australia won this World Cup in style.
- After the 1983 Cricket World Cup, India became the world champions again in the 2011 World Cup – this one of the greatest moments in the history of Indian cricket.
- In the year 2013, India also hosted the ICC Women’s World Cup, which was won by Australia.
Hockey World Cups in India :-
- India has hosted the Senior Men’s and the Junior Men’s Hockey World Cups for two years and one year respectively.
- The Senior Men’s Hockey World Cups were hosted in the years 1982 and 2010.
- India will be hosting the Senior World Cup in 2018 as well.
- The Junior Men’s Hockey World Cup was held in the year 2013. There were 16 teams that participated in this tournament and Germany was the winner.
Commonwealth Games 2010 in India :-
- This was the first mega sporting and athletic event that brought India in the limelight. After the Commonwealth Game, India too was given a status of an International sporting destination.
- With 6018 athletes from 71 Commonwealth nations, India witnessed a gigantic influx of talent.
- The national capital was at the helm of all things for this mega event.
- With a record of 272 events overall, India bid adieu to the players and athletes, but treasured the memories and accolades of time.
Asian Games in India :-
- The Asian Games were held in India in the years 1951 and 1982.
- The Asian Games welcomed 489 athletes from eleven Asian nations to compete in 57 events spread across 8 sports.
- A special 10 paise coin was minted for the Asian Games.
South Asian Games in India :-
- India hosted the 3rd South Asian Federation Games in 1987 and Kolkata was selected as the venue for these games.
- In the year 1995, India was again selected to host the South Asian Federation Games, which took place in Chennai.
- One significant achievement here was that India finished top on the medals tally.
