3 Himachal Pradesh became the first state to distribute ration by scanning face

Himachal Pradesh has introduced Aadhaar-based face authentication (FaceAuth) for distribution of ration under the Public Distribution System (PDS) from July 2025. This technology makes identity verification easier, faster and more reliable and overcomes the problems faced in older methods like OTP and fingerprint . In this new system, ration card holders are identified through scanning of their face, which is linked to their Aadhaar number. Face authentication is done through a mobile app installed on the smartphone of the Fair Price Shop (FPS) dealer. When the beneficiary comes to collect ration, his face is scanned by the app and ration is given to him after matching it with Aadhaar data. The OTP-based system used to fail due to network problems in remote and hilly areas . Fingerprint scans also used to fail many times due to UIDAI server errors or worn out fingers. In view of these problems, the Department of Digital Technology and Governance (DDTG) of Himachal Pradesh developed and implemented the FaceAuth system.
