1.Army honours Major who tied Kashmiri to military vehicle :-
In a surprising move, Army on Monday announced that the Major who tied a Kashmiri to a military vehicle as a precaution against stone-pelters has been awarded a commendation by Army Chief General Bipin Rawat.
The Army Chief’s decision comes even as the Court of Inquiry (CoI) against Major Leetul Gogoi continues and in the face of intense criticism of the action from various sections including many within the Army.
2.Modi launches new projects in Kutch, Gujarat :-
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said Gujarat’s Kandla Port in will soon be connected with Chabahar port in Iran, which is being developed with India’s participation, to boost India’s international trade.
Mr Modi also suggested that Kandla Port, largest cargo handling ports in the country, be renamed as Deendayal Port Trust to as part of Pt Deendayal Upadhyay’s centenary celebrations.
3.PM to inaugurate Annual Meetings of African Development Bank :-
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the Annual Meetings of the African Development Bank (AfDB) on May 23, 2017.
This is the first time in the history of AfDB Group that India would be hosting the Annual Meetings of the bank.
The meetings are to be held from May 22 to 26 at Gandhinagar in Gujarat. The core theme of the event is “Transforming Agriculture for Wealth Creation in Africa”.
4.Muslim Board calls for social boycott of those who resort to triple talaq :-
The All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) has urged members of the community to start a social boycott of those who have pronounced triple talaq in one go “so that such incidents may be minimised”, the Board told the Supreme Court in an affidavit on Monday.
The affidavit, filed by AIMPLB Secretary Mohammed Fazlurrahim, also placed on record its promise to the court to include enabling provisions in the nikahnama (marriage contract) which will allow a Muslim woman to extract assurance against triple talaq from her prospective husband.
5.Man in Pakistan custody came under the ATS scanner in 2003 :-
Nabi Ahmed Sheikh, the Mumbai native who has been arrested in Pakistan for allegedly staying in the country with invalid documents, was under the scanner of the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad in 2003 and crossed the Jammu border to enter Pakistan three years later, senior officers confirmed The Hindu.
6.Donald Trump visits Israel in search of revived peace process :-
After an exhausting two days in Saudi Arabia, U.S. President Donald Trump arrived in Israel on Monday, attempting to revive the stalled Israeli-Palestinian peace process with visits to Jerusalem and the West Bank. Over two days, Trump is to meet separately with both Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and visit holy sites. On Monday in Jerusalem, he will pray at the Western Wall and visit the Church of the Holy Sepulchre.
Netanyahu and his wife Sara, as well as Israeli President Reuven Rivlin and members of the Israeli cabinet, were at Tel Aviv’s Ben-Gurion airport to greet Trump and First Lady Melania in a red carpet ceremony after a direct flight from Riyadh.
7.Indian doctors stranded in Shenzhen leave for Macau :-
Twenty-five Indian doctors and their families, who were on a trip to China and got stuck at a hotel in Shenzhen over non-payment of dues, moved to Macau today after the issue was settled, Indian officials said.
The doctors attached with the Malad Medical Association (MMA)in Mumbai, were made to vacate their hotel rooms in Guangdong Province yesterday and forced to remain in the lobby until the entire amount was paid.
8.Japan’s SoftBank Invests Rs 9,000 Crore in Paytm :-
Softbank has made its biggest investment in an Indian digital enterprise by sealing a funding round of Rs 9,000 crore ($1.4 billion) in mobile payments provider Paytm.
This is the largest fund infusion by a single investor in an Indian start-up and also Softbank’s largest investment in a single company in India.
9.Saurabh Agrawal is the Tata Sons’ Chief Finance Officer :-
Tata Sons has roped in Aditya Birla Group strategy head Saurabh Agrawal as Group Chief Financial Officer of the salt-to-software conglomerate.
Mr. Agarwal, a veteran investment banker with two decades of capital markets experience, will join Tata Sons with effect from July 2017, has worked on the multi-billion dollar Vodafone merger with Idea Cellular and the acquisition of Jaypee Group cement assets by UltraTech.
10.Delhi: 2-day safety inspection of Metro Heritage Line begins :-
The Delhi Metro Monday began a two-day safety inspection of the 5.17-km-long section covering three stations — Delhi Gate, Jama Masjid and Red Fort. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is expecting a safety clearance following the inspection, after which it will be able to throw open the Heritage Line to the public, after a delay of over a year.
11.Ford replaces CEO Mark Fields in push to transform business :-
Ford is replacing CEO Mark Fields as it struggles to keep its traditional auto-manufacturing business running smoothly while remaking itself as a nimble, high-tech provider of new mobility services.
The 114-year-old automaker said Fields is retiring at age 56 after 28 years at the company. Fields will be replaced by Jim Hackett, who joined Ford’s board in 2013. Hackett has led Ford’s mobility unit since March of last year.
