1 Indian supplier is third largest provider of health and logistics support for children globally: UNICEF

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has said that Indian suppliers are the third largest provider of  the organisation’s health and logistics support for children globally   . Indian businesses have supplied goods and services worth nearly six billion dollars to UNICEF for its global work. Leela Pakkala, Director, UNICEF Supply Division, who is on her first official visit to India, said that Indian providers of life-saving goods and services for children are a vital part of UNICEF’s work for children around the world.

2 Government approves Hindustan Aeronautics Limited-HAL as the 14th Maharatna

The government has approved the  public sector enterprise  Hindustan Aeronautics Limited-HAL  as  the 14th Maharatna . The Department of Public Enterprises said in a social media post that Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman  has approved the inclusion of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited in the Maharatna. The proposal was recommended by the Inter-Ministerial Committee headed by the Finance Secretary and the Apex Committee headed by the Cabinet Secretary. Hindustan Aeronautics Limited is a Central Public Sector Enterprise, Department of Defense Production, with a turnover of Rs 28 thousand 162 crore and a net profit of more than Rs seven thousand five hundred crore in the year 2023-24.

3 Sub-classification of Scheduled Castes in Telangana

Recently,  the Telangana government  has  initiated the process of classifying Scheduled Castes (SC) into four different sub-groups (A, B, C and D). This development   comes  after the  landmark judgement of the Supreme Court  which empowered the states to sub-classify reserved categories including Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) for the purposes of reservation   . The Supreme Court has given  the power to the states to sub-classify the reserved categories including Punjab  and  Haryana .  High Court judgment, allowed the states to sub-classify Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes under Article 14 of the Constitution based on different levels of backwardness. It ruled that the ‘creamy layer’ principle, which earlier applied only to Other Backward Classes (OBCs) (as highlighted in the Indra Sawhney case), should now apply to SCs and STs as well.

4 Mohammed Siraj became DSP in Telangana

On October 11, Indian fast  bowler Mohammed Siraj  was   appointed  DSP by the Telangana  government  .  After India won  the T-20 World Cup this year, Telangana CM Revanth Reddy  ordered the officials to give a government job to Siraj and allot a plot. After India won the T-20 World Cup, the Telangana government announced to give a government job to Mohammed Siraj. Siraj played three matches for India in the 2024 T-20 World Cup. 30-year-old fast bowler Mohammed Siraj has played 28 Tests, 44 ODIs and 16 T20 matches for India so far. Siraj has 76 wickets in Tests, 71 in ODIs and 14 in T-20s. Siraj has taken 93 wickets in 93 matches played in the IPL.

5 Indian women’s team created history

On  October 12,   Indian women confirmed a medal in the women’s doubles at   the ongoing Asian Women’s Table Tennis Championship 2024 in Astana, Kazakhstan. The pair of Indian table tennis players  Ahikhya Mukherjee  and Sutirthi  Mukherjee  have confirmed the medal. Ahikhya Mukherjee and Sutirthi Mukherjee defeated South Korea’s Kim Nayong and Lee Yunhi. The Indian team defeated South Korea 10-12, 11-7, 11-9 and 11-8 to make it to the semi-finals. Now they will face Japan’s Miwa Harimoto and Miyu Kishara.
