1 Nepal: Vice-Chairman of Lumbini Development Trust Dr. Laharkyal Lama receives Mahasadhamma Jyotikadhaj Samman

Dr. Lharkhyal Lama, Vice President of the Lumbini Vikas Nyas  in   Nepal,  has  been conferred   the prestigious religious title  Maha Sadhamma Jyotikadhaja by the Myanmar government . The award was presented  by  Myanmar Ambassador to Nepal U Thant Sein at a special ceremony held at Ngagyur Pelyul Ling Monastery  . Dignitaries from India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, and Myanmar were present. Dr. Lama was awarded this honor for his continued contributions to the preservation and promotion of Buddhist teachings and heritage. He is also President of the International Buddhist Confederation, a global organization dedicated to Buddhist studies and archaeological conservation. Dr. Lharkhyal Lama is a renowned Tibetan Buddhist scholar from Nepal and is also known as Khenpo Chime Tsering.

2 India issues advisory for three African countries

On May 24  ,  the Indian government  issued   travel advisories  for  Congo, Uganda, and South Sudan . Citizens have been advised to avoid non-essential travel to these countries due to  the rising number of Ebola virus cases  . India has also sent the first consignment of emergency medical assistance and PPE kits to Africa. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar shared information about this assistance on social media. Congo has so far reported 867 cases of Ebola infection and 204 deaths. Thermal screening and surveillance of passengers arriving from these countries has been increased at airports. Ebola is an infectious disease that spreads from animals to humans. Currently, there is no vaccine or treatment for it. This time, the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola has been detected, whereas previously, most cases in Congo were of the Zaire strain.

3 WHO declares Ebola outbreak in Congo and Uganda a public emergency

 

The World Health Organization  (WHO)  has declared  the Ebola outbreak  in  the  Democratic Republic of the Congo  and  Uganda  a public health emergency of international concern  . The Africa CDC  has also recognized it as  a public health emergency of continental security  . Given the growing threat, the Government of India has advised Indian citizens to avoid unnecessary travel to the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda, and South Sudan. The increasing spread of the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola virus in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda has raised concerns among global health agencies. Given the severity of the situation, the World Health Organization declared it a public health emergency of international concern under the International Health Regulations 2005 on May 17, 2026. Subsequently, the Africa CDC has also designated the outbreak a public health emergency of continental security. In its provisional recommendations issued on May 22, the WHO Emergency Committee called for increased surveillance of travelers arriving from affected areas, strengthening the identification and reporting of cases of fever of unknown cause, and discouraging travel to areas affected by the Bundibugyo virus. Experts say Ebola is a severe viral hemorrhagic fever with a high mortality rate. Worryingly, there is currently no approved vaccine or specific treatment to prevent or treat infection with the Bundibugyo strain.

4 Karnataka Gramin Bank receives National Award for Best Performance in APY

 

In May 2026,  Karnataka Gramin Bank (KGB) —an Indian Regional Rural Bank (RRB)  —received a national award from   the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA)   for its outstanding performance in enrolment  under  the Atal Pension Yojana (APY) . KGB Chairman Shrikant M. Bhandiwad  received  the award  from M. Nagaraju, Secretary, Department of Financial Services (DFS), Ministry of Finance (MoF), and S. Raman, Chairman, PFRDA, during the APY Annual Awards Ceremony held in New Delhi. KGB opened 249,185 APY accounts against the PFRDA target of 175,500 accounts, achieving 142% of the target; the highest among all banks in Karnataka.  Launched  in May 2015  , the Atal Pension Yojana (APY)  is a government-backed  social security scheme for unorganised sector workers that  provides a guaranteed monthly pension of Rs 1,000 to Rs 5,000 after the age of 60,  depending on the subscriber’s contribution  .

5 Celebration of 75th ‘Fit India Sunday’ and Commonwealth Games Day

On May 24, ‘Fit India Sunday on Cycle’  was organised  at more than 8,000 locations  across the country  . The main event of this cycling mega event  was held in Ahmedabad.  Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya inaugurated the event at the Sabarmati Riverfront  in Ahmedabad   . This was the 75th edition of the ‘Fit India Sunday’ event. Commonwealth Games Day was also celebrated on May 24. Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghvi, Olympic medalist Gagan Narang and actor Ayushmann Khurrana also attended the event and gave the message of staying fit. The government appealed to the people to use bicycles for short distances.

6 Yuki Bhambri and Michael Venus finished runners-up in the Geneva Open doubles final

 

In  tennis  , India’s Yuki Bhambri  and his  New Zealand partner Michael Venus  finished runners-up at the Geneva Open  after losing a hard-fought  ATP 250 Men’s Doubles final  . The third-seeded Indo-New Zealand pair lost 6-3, 6-7, 7-10 to Monaco’s Romain Arneodo and Australia’s Marc Polmans in a final that lasted nearly two hours. Bhambri and Venus had reached the final on a high note, defeating Czech pair Petr Rikl and Adam Pavlasek 7-5, 6-3 in the semifinals. Yuki Bhambri has consistently been among India’s top doubles players over the past few years and will now be focusing on the upcoming French Open.

7 Under-23 Wrestling Championship: Indian wrestlers won three gold, two silver and three bronze medals.

 Indian wrestlers continued their impressive run at  the Asian Under-23 Wrestling Championships , winning  three gold, two silver and three bronze  medals  in  Da Nang, Vietnam . In the women  ‘s freestyle events,  Mansi Lathera (68kg) and Kajal Dhochak (76kg)  won gold medals, while  Saweety (50kg) and Neha Sangwan (59kg)  won silver medals.  Ahilya Shinde (55kg)  added another medal to the tally by winning a bronze medal.  In the men  ‘s Greco-Roman category,  Sumit Dalal (63kg category)  won gold, while  Neeraj Patel (55kg) and Rohit Bura (87kg category)  won bronze medals.

8 Gurindervir Singh won the gold medal in the men’s 100m event at the  Federation Cup Athletics Championships.

Gurindervir Singh  won  the gold medal  in the men’s 100m event   at  the Federation Cup Athletics Championships . He  achieved this feat with  a new national record of 10.09 seconds . Gurindervir’s previous record was 10.17 seconds. He broke Animesh Kujur’s record of 10.18 seconds  , which Animesh Kujur set last year in Odisha. The world record for the 100m race  (9.58 seconds) is held by Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt  , who set it in 2009. Gurindervir Singh  has also qualified for the Commonwealth Games 2026. The qualification mark  for the Commonwealth Games   is  10.16 seconds . Animesh Kujur  won the silver medal with a time of 10.20 seconds.  Pranav Pramod  won the bronze medal with a time of 10.29 seconds . Vishal TK won the gold medal in the men’s  400m event  with a new national record of 44.98 seconds. Vishal   became  the first Indian athlete to run the race in under 45 seconds . Despite this, Vishal missed the Commonwealth Games qualifying mark of 44.96 seconds . Rajesh Ramesh took the silver, and Jai Kumar took the bronze.
