1 Nobel Prize in Medicine announced, two American scientists will get the award for this discovery
This year’s Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine will be awarded to two American scientists, Victor Ambrose and Gary Ruvkun, for their discovery of a fundamental principle that controls gene activity . The Nobel Assembly at the Karolinska Institute has decided to award the 2024 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. The two scientists have discovered microRNAs, which carry information from genes into cells. Their unprecedented discovery has led to a completely new principle that will prove essential for understanding multicellular organisms, including humans. Their discovery shows that genetic information flows from DNA to messenger RNA (mRNA) and then to the cellular machinery of protein production through a process called transcription. Through this process, proteins are made from genetic instructions stored in DNA.
2 India has provided assistance of 400 million dollars to Maldives and bilateral currency exchange facility of three thousand crore rupees
India has provided assistance of $400 million and bilateral currency swap facility of Rs 3000 crore to Maldives . This assistance will help in dealing with the financial challenges faced by Maldives. This decision was taken during delegation level talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Maldives President Dr. Mohammed Muizzu in New Delhi . The two countries signed two agreements including bilateral cooperation to prevent and combat corruption. Two agreements were also renewed between the two countries in the field of capacity building programs for judicial officers of Maldives and sports and youth affairs.
The World Telecommunication Standardization Conference will be held in New Delhi from 14th to 24th of this month . This is the first time that this event of the International Communication Union is being held in the Indian Pacific region. More than three thousand delegates from all over the world will participate in it. Technology experts from 190 countries will cooperate in this event. Its objective is to decide the future of technology standards in areas like 6G, Artificial Intelligence, Internet, Big Data, Cyber Security and Quantum Technology .
4 WHO launches health labour market analysis tool
The World Health Organization (WHO) has launched the Health Labour Market Analysis Tool to assist Africa in assessing health workforce education capacity, supply and demand . The tool is designed to facilitate the integration of health workforce planning into labour market analysis. WHO developed the Health Labour Market Analysis Guidebook in 2021 and trained 75 experts from 25 countries in Africa.
Mr Nadda has been elected as the Chairman of the 77th Session of WHO South East Asia Regional Committee . Addressing the 77th Session of the World Health Organisation-WHO South East Asia Region, Mr Nadda said that the Government’s Ayushman Bharat-Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana has benefited more than 12 crore families and provided an annual benefit of six thousand dollars to each family for hospital treatment.

Nepal ‘s President Ramchandra Paudel on 7 October appointed Prakash Man Singh Raut as the new Chief Justice of the country . Paudel administered the oath of office and secrecy to Chief Justice Raut at a special ceremony held at the President’s Office Shital Niwas. Justice Prakash Man Singh Raut was born on 31 March 1961 in Udaipur, Nepal . He was appointed as a Justice of the Supreme Court by the President of Nepal on 1 August 2016.

8 UGC’s new initiative, meritorious researchers will get PhD excellence award
To promote innovation in the field of education, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has launched the ” PhD Excellence Award “, which will honor PhD researchers doing outstanding research work in various subjects every year. This decision was taken in the UGC meeting held on 3 October 2024. Under this, ten researchers will be awarded every year in the fields of science, engineering, sociology and Indian languages. The selection process for this honor is divided into two stages. In the first stage, the screening committee at the university level will review the work of the researchers, and then the final selection will be done by a selection committee at the UGC level.
9 Assistance amount under Ni-Kshay Poshan Yojana for TB patients doubled, increased from ₹500 to ₹1000 per month
Through schemes in the health sector , the central government is constantly engaged in providing relief in the cost of treatment and medicines to patients. In this sequence, now the central government has increased the monthly nutrition assistance under the Nikshay Poshan Yojana for TB patients from the existing ₹ 500 to ₹ 1000 per month . An additional allocation of Rs 1040 crore has been approved for the Nikshay Poshan Yojana as nutrition assistance for all TB patients.
10 Red Panda Programme of Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park, Darjeeling selected as finalist for WAZA Conservation Award 2024
The red panda programme at the Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park in Darjeeling has been selected as a finalist for the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA) Conservation Award 2024. The zoo has conducted several habitat restoration programmes in collaboration with the Government of India and various institutions. Between 2022 and 2024, nine protected red pandas were released in Singalila National Park in West Bengal . The zoo’s conservation efforts are strengthened by its Biobanking and Genetic Resources Centre, which preserves gametes, tissue and DNA of red pandas and other endangered species for future use. The winner of the WAZA Award will be announced at the 79th WAZA Annual Conference at Tarongo Zoological Park in Australia on 7th of next month.
11 Pankaj Advani won the Singapore Open Billiards title
Indian billiards player Pankaj Advani has won the Songhe Singapore Open title by defeating Jaden Ong 5-1 . Advani dominated the first two frames, while Ong won the third. Advani again took control in the fourth frame. In the final frame, Advani finished the game with an impressive victory over the competition with 74-6. Advani will now compete for the World Billiards title in Doha in the month of November.
12 Junior World Shooting Championship: Deepak Dalal, Kamaljeet and Rajchandra won gold medals on the last day in the men’s 50m pistol event
On the last day of the Junior World Shooting Championship in Lima , Peru, the trio of Deepak Dalal, Kamaljeet and Rajchandra won the gold medal in the men’s 50m pistol event . The Indian team beat Azerbaijan by one point and won the gold medal with 1,616 points. India’s junior shooters topped the championship with a total of 24 medals including 13 gold, three silver and eight bronze. Italy was in second place while Norway was in third place. The finals of the ISSF World Cup Rifle, Pistol and Shotgun will be held in Delhi from 13 to 18 October.
13 World Cotton Day
The day is observed every year on October 7 to recognize the importance of cotton as a global commodity and to promote awareness about the challenges faced by cotton farmers and the cotton industry around the world. Cotton is mainly used in the textile industry. It is also important for making animal feed, medical supplies, and edible oil. This year marks the fifth anniversary of this international event.
