1.Hindi Diwas : 14 September

Hindi Diwas or Hindi Day is observed every year on 14 September to mark the popularity of Hindi as an official language of India.It was on this day in 1949 that the constituent assembly adopted Hindi written in Devanagari as the official language of the country.The language was adopted under Article 343 of the Indian Constitution.Hindi is the fourth most spoken language of the world.The first Hindi day was celebrated on 14th September 1953.

2.Yoshihide Suga to succeed Shinzo Abe as Japan’s prime minister

Yoshihide Suga was elected as the new head of Japan’s ruling party, virtually guaranteeing him parliamentary election as the country’s next prime minister.Suga received 377 votes in the ruling Liberal Democratic Party election to pick a successor to Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, who announced last month that he would resign due to health problems.The other two contenders received a combined 157 votes.Suga is actually known for his iron-fist approach to getting jobs done as a policy coordinator and influencing bureaucrats by using the centralised power of the prime minister’s office.

3.AstraZeneca, Oxford University resume clinical trials of COVID-19 vaccine

Clinical trials of COVID-19 vaccine being developed by AstraZeneca and Oxford University have resumed in the United Kingdom after a brief safety pause.The trials resumed after the Medicines Health Regulatory Authority confirmed that the trials are safe.AstraZeneca had paused its trials after observing a single event of an unexplained illness that occurred in the UK phase III trial.After Astrazeneca resumed the trial in the United Kingdom.Serum Institute of India has said that they will restart the trial in the country once the apex drug regulator allows.Serum Institute of India partnered with AstraZeneca to manufacture the Oxford COVID-19 vaccine candidate for low-and-middle income countries.

4.SCTIMST develops device for prevention of Deep Vein Thrombosis

Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology, Trivandrum (SCTIMST), an autonomous institute of the Department of Science and Technology, has developed a device for the prevention of Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT).Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a serious condition that occurs when a blood clot forms in a vein located deep inside your body.A blood clot is a clump of blood that’s turned to a solid state. Deep vein blood clots typically form in your thigh or lower leg, but they can also develop in other areas of your body.The formation of a blood clot in a deep vein, usually in the legs or Deep Vein Thrombosis can lead to life threatening complications.The Ministry of Science and Technology in a statement said that scientists have come up with a device that can facilitate flow of blood from the veins in the legs thus preventing DVT.The device can bring relief to patients affected by prolonged immobility, bed ridden state, post-operative immobilization and paralysis of legs.Such devices which are so far imported cost between 2 lakh to 5 lakh rupees whereas the device developed by SCTIMST team can be placed in the market for less than one lakh rupees.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicated to the Nation three key projects related to the Petroleum sector in Bihar through video conferencing.The projects include, the Durgapur-Banka section of the Paradip-Haldia-Durgapur Pipeline Augmentation Project and two LPG Bottling Plants in East Champaran and Banka.The Bottling Plants will empower the Atmanirbhar Bihar’ by meeting the rising demand for LPG in the state.LPG Bottling Plants in East Champaran and Banka have a combined bottling capacity of 80 thousand cylinders per day.The Banka Plant will serve Bhagalpur, Banka, Jamui, Araria, Kishanganj and Katihar districts in Bihar and Godda, Deoghar, Dumka, Sahibganj and Pakur districts in the neighbouring Jharkhand .Similarly, the East Champaran Plant will serve over five lakh consumers in East and West Champaran, Muzaffarpur, Siwan, Gopalganj and Sitamarhi in Bihar and Kushinagar in Uttar Pradesh.

6.UP govt to constitute special force

Uttar Pradesh government has decided to constitute a special force.It will provide security to the high court, district courts, administrative offices and buildings, Metro rail, airports, banks, financial institutions, educational institutions and industrial units.The state government has issued orders for the constitution of the force and a roadmap in this regard has been sought from the UP DGP.The basis of this force is an order of the High Court, which had ordered that there should be a specialised force for civil courts.Five battalions will be constituted in the first phase and it will be headed by an ADG-ranked officer.On December 18, 2019, the Allahabad High Court had pulled up the Uttar Pradesh government over a shootout at a Bijnor courtroom.Three assailants had on December 17, 2019, opened fire in the court of the Bijnor chief judicial magistrate, killing a murder accused and injuring three others – two policemen and a court employee.

7.Foundation stone laid for Tripura’s first-ever Special Economic Zone

Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb laid the foundation stone for Tripura’s first-ever Special Economic Zone (SEZ) at Sabroom, the southernmost town of the state bordering Bangladesh.SEZ is an area in which the business and trade laws are kept different from the other part of the country.The SEZ, Sabroom, around 120 km from Agartala, would emerge as the commercial capital of the Northeast.The SEZ would be focussed on four sectors, including agro-based processing such as food processing, rubber, bamboo and textile sector.This SEZ, which would make Tripura a self-reliant state, would generate around 5,000 jobs, and the farmers and traders would benefit from it the most.

8.Gujarat govt to provide interest-free loans to women

The Gujarat government will launch ‘Mukhyamantri Mahila Utkarsh Yojana (MMUY)’ to provide interest-free loans to promote self-employment in the time of Covid-19 pandemic.The scheme will be launched on September 17, the birthday of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.Under this scheme, over 10-lakh women would be given interest-free financial loan.Under the scheme, about one lakh ‘Joint Liability and Earning Women Groups’ would be setup in the state.Of which, 50,000 groups would be made in rural areas and the rest in urban zones.Each group would consist of 10 women as partners. Each group would be given a loan of Rs 1 lakh. Thus, 10 lakh women would be given loans, in a phased manner, in total amounting to Rs 1,000 crore.

9.Indian film ‘The Disciple’ by Chaitanya Tamhane wins Best Screenplay award at Venice Film Festival 2020

The Marathi language feature film ‘The Disciple’, has bagged the prestigious FIPRESCI award for Best Screenplay at the 77th Venice Film Festival.The film has been written and directed by Mumbai-based filmmaker Chaitanya TamhaneThe Disciple is the first Indian film to have been selected in a major competition category at a European festival in 20 years after Mira Nair’s Monsoon Wedding in 2001.

10.Domnic Theim beats Alexander Zverev to win men’s singles title in US Open

Dominic Thiem produced a historic comeback to beat Alexander Zverev in a nervy five-setter and win the US Open.The second seeded Austrian beat the fifth seed 2-6, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 7-6 at Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York.It marked the first time in the US Open’s Open era history that a player had recovered from losing the opening two sets to win the title.It was also the first time the final had been settled by a tie-break.Thiem was runner-up at the Australian Open earlier this year and also lost in the last-two showdowns at the French Open in 2018 and 2019.

11.Lewis Hamilton wins F1 Tuscan Grand Prix 2020

Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes-Great Britain) has won the Formula One Tuscan Grand Prix 2020.The event was held at Mugello Circuit, Italy.This was his 6th win of the season and 90th F1 win of his career.Valtteri Bottas (Mercedes-Finland) secured the second spot followed by Alexander Albon (Red Bull – Thailand) at third place.The Tuscan GP was the ninth race of the 2020 Formula One World Championship.

12.Former Union Minister Raghuvansh Prasad Singh passes away

Former Union Minister Raghuvansh Prasad Singh passed away.He was undergoing treatment at AIIMS,Delhi about a week ago after developing post-Covid complications.Raghuvansh Prasad Singh recently resigned from the RJD party.Singh had served as the Union Minister for Rural Development in Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s cabinet.He was widely regarded as the brain behind the conceptualization and implementation of NREGA (National rural employment guarantee act).
