Recently, a new type of diabetes – Type 5 diabetes – has been officially recognised . The cause of this new type 5 diabetes is not linked to obesity but to malnutrition. The official recognition of the disease is expected to pave the way for better treatment of patients suffering from type 5 diabetes. Type 5 diabetes was first identified in Jamaica in 1955. The World Health Organization (WHO) classified the disease as bronchoconstrictor pancreatic diabetes and protein-deficiency pancreatic diabetes. However, the WHO stopped officially recognising this classification in 1999 due to lack of evidence. According to the WHO, it did not find any evidence to prove that malnutrition or protein deficiency causes diabetes. At the Bangkok conference, experts agreed that malnutrition causes diabetes, and they agreed to recognise type 5 diabetes as a non-communicable disease.
