1 President Murmu announced major administrative reshuffle, Haryana-Goa, Ladakh got new governors and LG

President  Draupadi Murmu  on Monday   announced  new governors  for  HaryanaGoa and new Lieutenant Governor  for  Union Territory  Ladakh . According to a statement issued by Rashtrapati Bhavan , Professor Asim Ghosh  has been appointed Governor of Haryana, while  former Union Civil Aviation Minister Pusapati Ashok Gajapati Raju  has been appointed Governor of Goa.   Former  Deputy Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir Kavinder Gupta  has been appointed as the new Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh. The date of all these appointments will be effective from the day they take charge of their respective posts. The President has accepted the resignation of the current Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, Brigadier BD Mishra (Retired), after which Kavinder Gupta will take charge of this post. Kavinder Gupta is a senior leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party. He has also been the Deputy Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir in the PDP-BJP coalition government led by Mehbooba Mufti. The new Governor of Goa, Pusapati Ashok Gajapati Raju, is a senior politician and has been the Union Civil Aviation Minister in the first term of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Born on 26 June 1951 in Chennai, Gajapati Raju  was a minister four times in the Andhra Pradesh  government. Haryana’s new Governor Professor Asim Ghosh is both an academician and a politician. He has been a professor of political science and joined the BJP in 1991.

2 UPI became the world’s top real time payment system, leaving behind Visa

 

 Former  NITI Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant  has   expressed happiness over Unified Payments Interface (UPI) becoming the world’s largest real-time payment system  .  He informed that  UPI is registering more than 65 crore transactions per day  and has also overtaken global payment platforms like Visa. According to the latest RBI report, UPI did a total of 185.8 billion transactions in FY 2024-25, which is 41% more than last year. The value of transactions also increased from Rs 200 lakh crore to Rs 261 lakh crore. Now India’s UPI system is at the forefront of all real-time payment systems in the world with a 48.5% share. At the same time, total digital payments in India grew by 35% to 221.9 billion transactions in FY 2025, while this figure was 164.4 billion in 2024. Transaction value also increased by 17.97% to Rs 2,862 lakh crore. The report also states that credit card transactions are expected to increase from 3.5 billion in 2024 to 4.7 billion in 2025, while debit card payments declined by 29.5% to 1.6 billion. Now the share of digital payments in total non-cash retail payments in India has reached 99.9%, up from 99.8% a year ago. Seeing the success of UPI, RBI has set a target of expanding it to 20 countries by 2028-29. Currently, Indian UPI apps can be used through QR codes in Bhutan, France, Mauritius, Nepal, Singapore, Sri Lanka and United Arab Emirates (UAE).

3 Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari inaugurated the country’s second longest Sigandur cable-stayed bridge in Shivamogga district of Karnataka

 

Road Transport and Highways Minister  Nitin Gadkari  inaugurated  the  country’s second longest Sigandur Cable Bridge  in  Shivamogga district   of  Karnataka .  Built between  Sagara and Markutika, the bridge is 2 km 440 metres long and 16 metres wide  . Built at a cost of over Rs 470 crore, the bridge will reduce the distance from Sagara town to Sigandur. Sigandur is home to the famous Chowdeshwari temple. The bridge   is designed using  Extradosed Balanced Cantilever technology and is India’s second longest cable-stayed bridge after the Dwarka bridge   in  Gujarat .

4 Dr. Abhijat Sheth appointed Chairman of National Medical Commission

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet of the Government of India  has  appointed renowned cardiothoracic surgeon Dr Abhijat Sheth  as  the new Chairman of the National Medical Commission (NMC)  . He will replace Dr Suresh Gangadhar, who resigned from his post due to ill health. Dr Suresh Gangadhar had submitted his resignation to the Government of India last October due to his ill health, but the government had asked him to continue in the post till a suitable successor is found. Dr Abhijat Sheth has been appointed for a term of four years from the date of assuming charge or till he attains the age of 70 years, whichever is earlier.

5 Inauguration of Coal India’s first fully women-run dispensary at South Eastern Coalfields Limited

 In a strong step towards  women empowerment , the all-women operated Vasant Vihar Dispensary  was formally inaugurated   at  South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL)  Head Office  Bilaspur . This is the first dispensary of Coal India  which  is fully operated by women  . Shri Harish Duhan, Chairman-cum-Managing Director, South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL) inaugurated the dispensary. This initiative is a significant step towards promoting women leadership in the coal sector. Vasant Vihar Dispensary will now be fully operated by a 14-member women team comprising doctors, nurses, pharmacists and support staff. The dispensary has facilities like OPD service, casualty and emergency medical services, dressing and injection room, ECG facility, blood collection centre for pathology tests and OPD pharmacy.

6 Archery World Cup 2025 Madrid: Jyoti leads India to three medals

 

Indian archers  won  three  medals – one silver, two bronze  – at  the Archery World Cup 2025 Stage-4   held in  Madrid, Spain  from  8-13 July 2025. Jyothi Surekha Vennam  was involved in all three medals won by Indians at the Madrid stage of the 2025 Archery World Cup. The Indian team  finished 8th in the medal table  , with  South Korean archers topping the list with 9 medals – 3 gold, 2 silver and 4 bronze  . All the medals were won in the compound event and Indian recurve archers failed to win a single medal in Madrid.  Jyothi Surekha Vennam  had to settle for   a silver medal after losing to Britain’s Ella Gibson in the final of the women’s compound individual event . Jyothi Surekha Vennam, Preneet Kaur and Prithika Pradeep lost to Chinese Taipei’s team in the final of the women’s compound team event and   got  the silver medal . Jyothi Surekha Vennam and Rishabh Yadav  won the team compound event in the team. At the 2025 Archery World Cup, four stages were held, and the final will be held in Nanjing, China in October 2025. In the four stages of the 2025 Archery Cup, Indian archers won a total of 14 medals – three gold, four silver and seven bronze medals.

7 Chelsea Football Club created history by winning the FIFA Club World Cup for the first time

Chelsea Football Club  created history by   winning  the FIFA Club World Cup for the first time. In a thrilling match held in New Jersey  , Chelsea  defeated Paris Saint-Germain  3-0. Cole Palmer gave his team the lead by scoring two goals in eight minutes. After this, Joao Pedro scored the third goal before halftime. Chelsea scored the most 17 goals in the tournament.

8 Veteran actress B. Saroja Devi passes away in Bengaluru

Veteran actress B. Saroja Devi,  popularly known as  Abhinaya Saraswati  , died in Bengaluru at the age of 87.  A Padma Bhushan recipient, Saroja Devi  acted in more than 200 films in  her seven-decade-long film career  . She was not just an actress but an inspiration who   set an example by acting in four languages – Tamil, Kannada, Telugu and Hindi . Her popularity in four languages  earned her the title of ‘Chaturbhasha Taare’ in 1962.  Her first major success was the 1955 Kannada film ‘ Mahakavi Kalidas ‘ in which she played a supporting role, at the age of just 17. In Hindi films too, she  worked with big stars like Dilip Kumar, Rajendra Kumar and Shammi Kapoor.  Saroja Devi acted in many films like Sasural (1960), Opera House (1961), Pariksha, Hong Kong (1962) and Pyar Kiya To Darna Kya (1963). He  was awarded  the Padma Shri in 1969 and the Padma Bhushan in 1992.  In addition, he received the Kalaimamani Award  of  Tamil Nadu  and   an honorary doctorate from Bangalore University .

9 Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari dies at the age of 82

 

Former Nigerian President  Muhammadu  Buhari  died on Sunday at the age of 82 during treatment in London.  Leaders around the world, including  Indian Prime Minister  Narendra Modi, have expressed deep grief over his demise. At the same time, the current President of Nigeria , Bola Ahmed Tinubu,  has expressed deep grief over the death of the former President. Muhammadu Buhari was born on 17 December 1942. He spent a long time in the Nigerian Army and later played an active role in politics. He   remained in power as a military ruler from 1983 to 1985 and then became  the democratically elected President in the year 2015.  He  was the first opposition candidate in the history of Nigeria to defeat  an  incumbent President and win the election .  He was re-elected President in 2019  and completed two terms by handing over power to Bola Tinubu on 29 May 2023.
