1.Chennai Open renamed Maharashtra Open, to be held in Pune :-

India’s most celebrated tennis event, the ATP tournament which acquired heritage status as the ‘Chennai Open’, will now be held in Pune next year and would be henceforth called “Maharashtra Open.

IMG-Reliance, the right holders of the tournament along with Government of Maharashtra and Maharashtra State Lawn Tennis Association (MSLTA), made the announcement.

 

2.UK govt appoints Brenda Marjorie Hale as first female President of SC :-

The UK government has appointed Brenda Marjorie Hale as the first female President of the Supreme Court, the senior-most judge of the country.

Baroness Hale, 72, will take charge as the head of Britain’s top judging panel in September following the retirement of current President, Lord Neuberger.

She has served as Neuberger’s deputy since 2013.

 

3.President of India to Address the Nation Tomorrow on the Eve of Demitting Office :-

The President of India, Shri Pranab Mukherjee will address the nation (July 24, 2017) on the eve of demitting office.

The address will be broadcast from 1930 hrs. on the national network of All India Radio (AIR) and telecast over all channels of Doordarshan in English followed by Hindi versions.

 

4.Defence Minister Inaugurates Sainik Rest House in New Delhi :-

Defence Minister Shri Arun Jaitley inaugurated the Sainik Rest House here today. It is the 315th Rest House of the Kendriya Sainik Board (KSB), which is built at a cost of around ₹ 8 crore.

Speaking on the occasion, Shri Jaitley expressed hope that this is the beginning of an initiative and the KSB will be able to expand on these in the years to come so that such facilities become an integral part of facilities for Ex-Servicemen.

 

5.India implodes in thrilling finale :-

England beat India by nine runs in a pulsating final to win the Women’s World Cup at Lord’s on Sunday.

India, set 229 for victory, was on course at 191 for three but Punam Raut’s dismissal for 86 sparked a dramatic collapse.

 

6.Indian space pioneer Udupi Ramachandra Rao passes away :-

Eminent space scientist and former Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) Chairman Udupi Ramachandra Rao passed away in Bengaluru in the wee hours of Monday due to age related ailments. He was 85.

“Rao breathed his last during the early hours, around 3 am today,” ISRO Public Relations Director Deviprasad Karnik told PTI.

 

7.Vaghela resigns as Leader of Opposition :-

Veteran leader Shankersinh Vaghela, who quit the Congress two days ago, on Sunday resigned as Leader of the Opposition in the Gujarat Assembly. Mr. Vaghela sent his resignation letter to Congress president Sonia Gandhi.

In his letter shared with the media, the former Chief Minister alleged that he was forced to take this “tough decision” as some Congress leaders were conspiring against him ahead of the Assembly polls, expected to be held in Gujarat in December.

 

8.TRAI to begin consultation on mobile apps seeking user data :-

Mobile apps seeking blanket access to phone users’ information — even if irrelevant to their functions — have come under the lens of Trai, which will start consultation on data privacy and security in the telecom sector, according to a top official.

“There should be a link between what an application does and information the application is asking for… You will see a consultation paper… we are working on the issue,” Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) Chairman, R S Sharma, told PTI.
