10.Defense Secretary inaugurates two day National Level Pollution Response Exercise of Indian Coast Guard at Mormugao Port, Goa

The objective of ‘NATPOLREX-VIII’ is to enhance the preparedness and response capacity of all stakeholders in dealing with maritime spills. In addition, it aims to implement the procedures and guidelines contained in the National Oil Spill Disaster Contingency Plan (NOSDCP) at the national and regional level under the SACEP MoU, of which India is a member state. During this exercise various components of NOSDCP were implemented to validate and improve contingency plans and to evaluate the preparedness of resource agencies as well as stakeholders to deal with any maritime spill disaster at sea. Over 85 participants from 50 agencies participated in the exercise, including 29 observers from 22 friendly countries and international organizations and two Coast Guard ships from Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

The device is roughly the size of a carry-on luggage and can accurately test a person’s coronavirus in minutes. The technology uses gas chromatography-mass spectrometry to identify and separate chemical mixtures and rapidly screen for five compounds that are linked to COVID-19 infection in a person’s breath. Using a single-use sanitary paper straw, a person sends a sample of their breath to the device and then the device searches for and identifies chemicals and compounds that have been linked to COVID-19. A positive result given by this tool is still considered predictable and the result still needs to be confirmed with an RT-PCR test. This tool can prove to be a game-changer for large-scale screening of COVID-19 in an area.

16.FEMA rules amended for LIC IPO
Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) by the government to pave the way for Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) up to 20% in Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) .The rules have been amended. The central government is going to reduce its stake in LIC through an initial public offering (IPO). In February, LIC filed a draft red herring prospectus (DRHP) for issuance of IPO before SEBI. In the month of March, SEBI had approved the draft papers. LIC is currently in the process of submitting a Request for Proposal with some changes. Following Cabinet approval, on March 14, the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) amended the FDI policy to facilitate foreign investment ahead of LIC’s mega public offer. The FEMA notifications were required to implement provisions issued by DPIIT, including changes to the FDI policy that would allow foreign portfolio investors to subscribe to LIC shares.

21.BRO to build world’s tallest tunnel connecting Himachal Pradesh with Ladakh
BRO Director General Lt Gen Rajeev Choudhary announced that the World’s Highest Tunnel at Shinku La Pass at 16,580 feet to connect the Border Roads Organization Himachal Pradesh and Ladakhwill build. He said this while opening the strategically important Himachal to Zanskar road Shinku La pass, where more than half a dozen vehicles ply from Zanskar side towards Manali. He said the Center has already set up a ‘Mission Joint’ of BRO to complete this ambitious project. He said that the construction of this tunnel will be completed by 2025 and it will change the economy of Zanskar Valley.
