1. Project Kusha: India’s air defense system

The Defence Minister  ,  while inaugurating the Advanced Weapon Systems Complex at DRDO’s Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Missile Complex   in  Hyderabad , described Project Kusha as a ” game changer ” for India’s security architecture . Project Kusha, also known as  the Extended Range Air Defence System ( ERADS ), is  an indigenous long-range surface-to-air missile system  being developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO)  to ensure a multi-layered air defence system against various aerial threats. The system envisages   three  interceptor variants — the M1 with a range of approximately 150 kmthe M2 with a range of approximately 250 km,  and  the M3 with a range of approximately 350–400 km  —capable of providing a multi-layered interception capability. Project Kusha is designed to counter fighter aircraft, stealth platforms, drones, cruise missiles, precision-guided munitions, and certain ballistic missile threats. The system is proposed to be integrated with the Indian Air Force’s Integrated Air Command and Control System (IACCS), which will enable real-time coordination between military and civilian radar networks.

2 Jasdan Patari Sanduk from Gujarat gets GI tag

 

 On June 16 , Jasdan Patari , a famous handicraft from  Rajkot district in Gujarat  ,  recently  received a Geographical  Indication (GI). The GI tag will protect the unique identity, cultural heritage, and skills of local artisans of this traditional craft. Jasdan Patari  is a traditional chest made of teak wood  . This chest  is decorated with embossed metals like brass and copper  . The GI tag provides legal protection to the authenticity of the product and its unique geographical identity.

3 Union Minister Pralhad Joshi to launch smart warehousing system for food storage

 

The Department of Food and Public Distribution (DFPD) will launch the Smart Warehousing System  on   June 18th   at   Bharat Mandapam  in New Delhi . Union Minister for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution  Pralhad Joshi  will be present at the event. The Smart Warehousing System   has been developed as  an integrated technology-based solution aimed at strengthening warehouse management systems and increasing the efficiency of food grain storage operations  . This initiative is expected to result in a modern storage system that will make food grain management more effective and help ensure the country’s food security in the long run.

4 Miss Grand International 2026 will be held in India for the first time

 

On June 16th  , it was officially announced that  India will host Miss Grand International 2026 for the first time  . According to reports, the pageant  will be held in Jaipur, Agra, and New Delhi in October  . This is the 14th edition of Miss Grand International   , and India was officially declared the 2026 host country during the 2025 finale. India will be represented at Miss Grand International by  Lakshitha Thilagaraj  , who  won the title of Miss Grand India 2026.  The 2025 Miss Grand International winner was Emma Marie Tigalo of the Philippines. This Grand International will provide India with an opportunity to showcase fashion, promote tourism, and showcase its culture globally. Beauty queens from countries around the world will participate in the competition.

5 Footballer Lionel Messi scores his first hat-trick in FIFA

 On June 17th ,  Argentina  ‘s  star footballer and captain, Lionel Messi,  played  his 200th international match at the FIFA World Cup . The 38-year-old Messi scored the most goals in  the tournament’s  history, 16 , and also scored  the tournament’s first hat-trick . He  became   the world’s  oldest player to score the most goals, and has now scored 11 international hat-tricks. With this hat-trick, Messi  equaled  Miroslav Klose’s record of scoring the most goals in World Cup history, 16. Messi also became the first player to play in six men’s FIFA World Cups  . Messi’s powerful performance at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City helped Argentina defeat Algeria 3-0 in a Group J match. Messi   has won football’s most prestigious award, the Ballon d’Or, eight times .

6 World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought

 In  1994 , the United Nations  designated  June 17th  as  World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought . The day is celebrated to raise awareness about the impacts of desertification and drought. This year’s theme is  “Grasslands: Recognize, Respect, and Restoration .” This theme highlights the need for greater recognition of the economic, ecological, and cultural importance of grasslands, respect for their custodians, and increased investment in restoring degraded grasslands.
