2.US: Joe Biden becomes Democratic presidential nominee

Former US Vice President Joe Biden, has formally become the Democratic presidential nominee to run for the White House against President Donald Trump in the elections in November this year.Biden took his tally of pledged delegates over the halfway mark of 1,991 from a total of 3,979, becoming eligible to earn the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination.The veteran Democrat served as the 47th vice president of the United States from 2009 to 2017 during the presidency of Barack Obama.Biden has been consistently supportive of the India-US relations. As a Senator, he had voted to approve the landmark civilian nuclear deal between the two countries in 2008.

3.G20 countries pledge over $21 billion to fund fight COVID-19 pandemic

Member countries of the Group of 20 pledged more than $21 billion to fight the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.The G20, with invited countries, has coordinated the global efforts to support the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic.To date, G20 members and invited countries have pledged over $21 billion to support funding in global health.The announcement comes after the G20 countries injected more than $5 trillion into the global economy in late March to fight the virus and its economic impact.At the time, the G20 leaders also asked the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund “to support countries in need using all instruments to the fullest extent.

4.Rajasthan CM Gehlot launches Online Labour Employment Exchange

Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot recently launched the Raj Kaushal Portal and Online Shramik Employment Exchange through video conferencing.It is a major initiative taken by the state government after the lockdown, to make it easier for the workers to get employment who are suffering from livelihood losses and to make the labour available to the industries facing labour shortage.Taking a note of the migration of workers from the state and the arrival of migrant workers due to the corona pandemic, CM Gehlot had directed to create an online labour exchange.

5.NCL Pune develops indigenous nasopharyngeal swab for collecting samples

The National Chemical Laboratory (NCL) Pune has successfully developed an indigenous nasopharyngeal (NP) swab for collecting samples from the throat cavity of patients affected with Corona Virus which causes the COVID-19.The NCL, a lab under the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), will manufacture one lakh nasopharyngeal swabs a day.The nasopharyngeal swab is a medical device with stringent specifications of quality, polymer grade, dimensions and sterilization.It consists of a cylindrical plastic stick with a brush-like tip of synthetic bristles/flocks.

6.Government sets up task force to examine maternal mortality rate, women’s health

The Ministry for Women and Child Development (WCD) has set up a task force to look into factors that affect Maternal Mortality Rate (MMR) among Indian women.The task force, headed by Jaya Jaitley, has been mandated with inquiring into “matters pertaining to age of motherhood, imperatives of lowering MMR, improvement of nutritional levels and related issues.The task force will examine the correlation of the age of marriage and motherhood with the health, medical wellbeing and nutritional status of the mother and her baby during pregnancy, childbirth and afterwards.It will also suggest measures for promoting higher education among women and suggest suitable legislation or amendments in existing laws to support its recommendations.

Kylie Jenner and Kanye West topped the annual Forbes list of the highest paid celebrities, but sports stars, including Roger Federer and Lionel Messi, dominated the top 10.Forbes estimated that Jenner earned $590 million in the last 12 months, mostly from the sale of a 51% stake in her Kylie Cosmetics line to Coty in 2019.Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar, 52-year-old, is the only Indian to feature on Forbes 2020 list of World’s Highest-Paid Celebrities, at the number corresponding to his age, 52.In this list, Akshay has beaten celebs such as Hollywood actors Will Smith and Jennifer Lopez, and singer Rihanna, with earnings of 48.5 million dollars.

8.Rahul Shrivastava appointed as next Ambassador of India to Romania

Rahul Shrivastava, a senior diplomat has been appointed as the next Ambassador of India to Romania.Mr Shrivastava, a 1999 batch IFS officer is presently a joint secretary in the ministry.He is expected to take up the assignment shortly.

9.British Producer and songwriter Rupert Hine passes away

British Producer and songwriter Rupert Hine who worked with artists including Tina Turner, Howard Jones, passed away.He began his career as a musician in folk band Rupert & David and also worked with other bands such as Quantum Jump and Spin 1ne 2wo.Rupert Hine was a dominant producer in the 1980s and 1990s.His renowned works that appeared on soundtracks for the films Better Off Dead, Golden Eye, The Fifth Element, etc.He also produced the Grammy-winning single Better Be Good to Me.

10.Former India footballer Hamza Koya died of COVID-19 in Kerala

Former Indian footballer Hamza Koya has died of COVID-19 in Kerala.He was a  former football player who had represented Maharashtra at the Santosh Trophy and also  an India team member in Nehru trophy.The deceased is a native of Parapanagadi, who had returned from Mumbai recently and passed away in Manjeri Medical College in Malappuram.

11.Former Delhi Police commissioner Ved Marwah dies

Former Delhi Police commissioner Ved Marwah died in Goa. He was 87.Marwah was the police commissioner of Delhi from 1985-88 and served as the third director general of the elite National Security Guard from 1988-90.He was a former governor of Manipur, Jharkhand and Mizoram.He was an outstanding civil servant and an able administrator.
