1.International Nurses Day : 12 May

International Nurse Day is observed globally on 12 May every year.This day is observed to commemorate the birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale.

She was the founder of modern nursing and was a British social reformer and statistician.

2020 theme: “Nursing the World to Health”.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has designated the year 2020 as the International Year of the Nurse and the Midwife.

2.Centre releases Rs 6,195 crore to 14 states

The Centre has released over 6 thousand 195 crore rupees to 14 states as the second equated monthly installment of the Post Devolution Revenue Deficit Grant.Office of the Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in a tweet said that the amount will provide the States additional resources during the COVID-19 crisis.

The grant was recommended by the 15th Finance Commission.

The grant has been released to the States of Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Himachal Pradesh, Kerala, Punjab, Tamil Nadu, Uttarakhand, West Bengal, Tripura, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland and Sikkim.

3.Atal Pension Yojana completes 5 years

Atal Pension Yojana (APY), the flagship social security scheme of the government has completed five years of successful implementation.Launched on May 9, 2015 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the APY aims at delivering old age income security particularly to the workers in the unorganised sector.

As per official data, over these five the total enrolment under the APY scheme stood at 2,23,54,028. 

APY can be subscribed by any Indian citizen in the age group of 18-40 years having a bank account.

It provides a minimum guaranteed pension ranging from Rs 1000 to Rs 5000 on attaining 60 years of age.

Secondly the amount of pension is guaranteed for lifetime to the spouse on death of the subscriber.

4.CSIR-NAL develops Non-Invasive Ventilator ‘SwasthVayu” to treat COVID-19 patients

The National Aerospace Laboratories said it has developed a non-invasive BiPAP ventilator to treat COVID-19 patients, in ”record” 36 days.The ventilator named ”SwasthVayu” is the culmination of efforts of a team of technocrats, medical practitioners and scientists at NAL.

The major advantage of this device was that it was simple to use without any specialized nursing, cost effective, compact and configured with majority of indigenous components.

It was ideal for treating COVID -19 patients in wards, make-shift hospitals, dispensaries and homes in the current Indian scenario.

A BiPAP Non Invasive Ventilator “SwasthVayu” is a microcontroller-based precise closed-loop adaptive control system.

It has a built-in biocompatible “3D printed manifold & coupler” with Highly Efficient Particulate Air (HEPA) filter.

5.Newly born Olive Ridley turtles along Odisha coast start their journey back to sea

The newly born Olive Ridley turtles along the Odisha coast, have started their journey back to sea.As of late March, Olive Ridley turtles settled in the Gahirmatha and Rushikulya rookery in the eastern state and laid their eggs in the sand.

From the start of May, the tiny hatchlings begin emerging from the sand and making their journey towards the water without facing any human interference.

Nearly 2 crore plus olive Ridley hatchlings have emerged & made their way to sea from half of about 4 lakh nesting at Nasi-2 islands, Gahirmatha rookery Odisha.

6.MP Home Minister launches country’s first ever ‘FIR Aapke Dwar’ Yojana

Madhya Pradesh Home Minister Dr Narottam Mishra launched the country’s first ever ‘FIR Aapke Dwar Yojana’ in Bhopal.Madhya Pradesh is the first state in the country to implement such an innovative scheme.

‘FIR Aapke Dwar’ scheme has been started as a pilot project in 23 Police Stations including one urban and one rural Police Station at 11 Divisional Headquarters.

Dial 100 vehicle would have trained Head Constables to lodge FIR.

FIRs in complaints of general nature will be lodged on the spot.

7.Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ launches Central University of Odisha helpline ‘Bharosa’ to help students in distress

Union Minister for Human Resource Development Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank launched the Central University of Odisha Helpline ‘Bharosa’ to relieve distress of the student community during the difficult time of COVID-19 pandemic.The Helpline Number 08046801010 was launched through a virtual platform in New Delhi.

The helpline aims at providing Cognitive Emotional Rehabilitation Services to all University Students of Odisha.

Mr Nishank asserted that the mental health concern of the students is of great importance and the Helpline launched by the Central University of Odisha is a great step towards that.

8.Production work at Sports equipment industry in Meerut started

In Uttar Pradesh, production work at the famous sports equipment industry in Meerut has started again after relaxation in Lockdown.There is a huge rise in indoor game equipment and the trend is going to remain due to new work for home culture.

Production work has started at almost 500 out of around 3 thousand units of the sports industries of Meerut which supplies fitness and sports equipment to the world.

Meerut is one of the largest producers of sports goods, and the largest producer of musical instruments in India.

The city is also known as the “Sports City Of India”.

9.Indu Shekhar Chaturvedi takes charge as MNRE Secretary

Indu Shekhar Chaturvedi has assumed charge as Secretary in the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy (MNRE).Chaturvedi is a 1987 batch IAS officer and belongs to Jharkhand cadre.

He succeeds Anand Kumar, who earlier took charge as Secretary in the Ministry of Culture.

Prior to this appointment, Chaturvedi was serving as Additional Chief Secretary and Additional Secretary (Climate Change Department) of the Ministry of Climate Change Department, Environment & Forest, Government of Jharkhand.

10.Government extends last date for receipt of Gandhi Peace Prize-2020 nominations up to June 15

Union Government has extended the last date for the receipt of nominations for the Gandhi Peace Prize-2020 up to 15th of June.The Ministry of Culture invites nominations for awarding Gandhi Peace Prize every year.

For the year 2020, the last date for receiving the nominations was 30th of April.

Due to COVID-19 lockdown throughout the country, the last date for receipt of nominations for the Prize has now been extended up to 15th of June.

The International Gandhi Peace Prize, named after Mahatma Gandhi, is awarded annually by the Government of India.

As a tribute to the ideals espoused by Gandhi, the Government of India launched the International Gandhi Peace Prize in 1995 on the occasion of the 125th birth anniversary of Mohandas Gandhi.

This is an annual award given to individuals and institutions for their contributions towards social, economic and political transformation through non-violence and other Gandhian methods.

The award carries ₹ 1 Crore (10 million) in cash, convertible in any currency in the world, a plaque and a citation.

11.China Wins FIDE Chess.com Online Nations Cup

China won the inaugural FIDE Chess.com Online Nations Cup.Their Superfinal with the USA ended 2-2 with China having drawn odds for winning the round-robin phase.

Co-organized by FIDE and Chess.com, the event had a peak of over a million concurrent viewers across all languages and broadcast partners.

The FIDE Chess.com Online Nations Cup was a team competition held from May 5-10, 2020 on Chess.com featuring Russia, USA, Europe, China, India, plus a team representing the “Rest of the World.”

The total prize fund was $180,000, sponsored by Chess.com.

12.Former MP Raja Rangappa Naik dies

Former Lok Sabha member and senior JD(S) leader Raja Rangappa Naik passed away.He had represented the Raichur Lok Sabha seat, when he had won the seat in the 1996 General election as the Janata Dal.

He had strived hard for the development of Kalyana Karnataka (old Hyderabad-Karnataka region).
