1 Russia officially ended its commitment to the 1987 INF nuclear weapons treaty

Russia has officially announced that it no longer considers itself bound by the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty . The 1987 arms control pact banned ground-launched missiles with a range of 500 to 5,500 kilometres. Moscow accused Western countries of posing a direct threat to its national security. The Russian Foreign Ministry said the terms of the treaty would no longer apply and confirmed that it would no longer comply with restrictions on missile deployments. Russia cited recent US military actions as the main reason for this. These included the deployment of the Typhon missile system in the Philippines and missile exercises during the Talisman Saber exercise in Australia . Moscow said these steps have damaged global stability and increased pressure on its security. The INF Treaty was already weakened after the US withdrew from the treaty in 2019, accusing Russia of violations. Just days earlier, US President Donald Trump had said that he had sent two nuclear submarines into uncharted territories . The statement came after former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev’s remarks, which Trump described as provocative.

Parliament has imposed President’s rule in Manipur approved the proposal to extend the period of for the next six months from August 13, 2025. The Rajya Sabha passed this proposal by voice vote. The Lok Sabha had approved it last week. Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai introduced the proposal to extend the period of President’s rule in the House. He said that President’s rule was imposed in Manipur on February 13, 2025 .

The Ministry of Textiles in collaboration with National Handloom Development Corporation (NHDC) has organized a special Handloom Exhibition and “ the 11th National Handloom Day the launch of “ Haat on Wheels ” mobile retail initiative. . Union Textiles Minister Giriraj Singh inaugurated the Handloom Exhibition and Haat on Wheels in presence of Minister of State for Textiles Pabitra Margherita. Handloom Expo is open to the public till 10th of this month. The exhibition will bring together skilled weavers from across India who will retail region-specific handloom products and showcase 116 unique weaves. The event will also have live weaving demonstrations, providing an immersive and educational experience for visitors, students and craft lovers alike.
4 India will emerge as the world’s 5th largest aviation market by 2024

India is the fifth largest aviation market in the world, handling 211 million passengers India has emerged as , while Mumbai-Delhi was projected to be one of the busiest airport pairs in 2024. This was stated by the International Airport Transport Association (IATA) , which released the latest edition of World Air Transport Statistics (WATS) for 2024. According to IATA, India handled 211 million air passengers last year, an increase of 11.1 percent compared to 2023, ahead of Japan, which handled 205 million passengers with an annual growth of 18.6 percent. The US will remain the world’s largest aviation market with 876 million passengers in 2024, driven by its domestic market, which grew 5.2 percent year-on-year. China remained the second largest passenger market with 741 million passengers, an increase of 18.7 percent compared to 2023. Britain ranked third with 261 million passengers, while Spain ranked fourth with 241 million. These figures include all international and domestic passengers departing from or arriving in each country.
5 LTIMindtree gets ₹811 crore PAN 2.0 project from Income Tax Department

In a major boost to India’s digital governance, the Income Tax Department has selected LTIMindtree Ltd (a subsidiary of Larsen & Toubro) to implement the PAN 2.0 project . The project was approved by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) in November 2024 . The project worth ₹811.5 crore aims to modernise PAN and TAN services and make them more efficient and transparent. The project is expected to be implemented within the next 18 months. The PAN 2.0 project is a digital initiative to transform India’s Permanent Account Number (PAN) system into a technologically advanced and modern framework.
6 Heavy destruction in Dharali village due to cloudburst in Uttarkashi district

Recently, a massive flash flood occurred due to cloudburst in the upper catchment area of Kheer Ganga river in Dharali village of Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand . caused massive destruction. The village, considered an important stopover for pilgrims going on pilgrimage to Gangotri Dham , was hit by torrential water, causing heavy damage to houses, shops and roads. According to initial reports, a cloudburst occurred in the upper catchment areas of Kheer Ganga river, causing a sudden rise in the water level of Kheer Gadh in Harsil area. This sudden increase in water flow wreaked havoc in Dharali village, leading to severe flooding and widespread destruction.

9 Former Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satyapal Malik passes away

Former Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satya Pal Malik passed away at the age of 79 after a prolonged illness. He was undergoing treatment at Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital in New Delhi. Satya Pal Malik was a seasoned politician and played a key role during one of the most crucial phases in the history of Jammu and Kashmir — the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019. He also served as the Governor of Goa and Meghalaya . Malik served in the Rajya Sabha twice —first in 1980 and second in 1989, when he was an MP from the Congress party . Satya Pal Malik was appointed the last Governor of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir in August 2018. His tenure became historically significant when on 5 August 2019 , the Government of India revoked the special status of Jammu and Kashmir by revoking Article 370. After Jammu and Kashmir, Malik was appointed Governor of Goa and then Governor of Meghalaya, where he served till October 2022.
