1 Supreme Court gets five new judges

Five new judges have been appointed to the Supreme Court . This brings the total number of judges, including the Chief Justice, to 37. The Collegium, headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant, recently recommended five names to the President. These include the Chief Justices of four different High Courts, and a senior advocate. This information was provided by Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal. Exercising the powers conferred under clause (2) of Article 124 of the Constitution of India, the President, after consultation with the Chief Justice of India , appointed Justice Sheel Nagu (Punjab and Haryana High Court) , Justice Chandra Shekhar (Bombay High Court) , Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva (Madhya Pradesh High Court) , Justice Arun Palli (Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh High Court) , and senior advocate V. Subramani Mohana as Supreme Court judges. V. Subramani Mohana is among the few individuals who have transitioned directly from practicing law to becoming a Supreme Court judge. It is noteworthy that on May 5, the Union Cabinet approved a proposal to increase the number of judges in the Supreme Court from 33 to 37. This increased the sanctioned strength of judges, excluding the Chief Justice, from 33 to 37. Even after the appointment of five judges, one position remains vacant in the Supreme Court.

On June 1 , a new zone of the Indian Railways , the South Coast Railway (SCoR), became operational. It is the 18th zone of the Indian Railways . Its headquarters is in Visakhapatnam. The SCoR has been carved out of parts of the existing East Coast Railway and South Central Railway . The SCoR comprises four divisions – Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada, Guntur, and Guntakal . The SCoR will manage 6,454 kilometers of tracks (track kilometers) and 385 railway stations spread over approximately 3,532 kilometers (route kilometers) in Andhra Pradesh and neighboring regions. The SCoR zone aims to handle 100 million tons of freight annually.
3 ‘Save Farm Campaign’ started from Raisen

Union Agriculture, Farmers Welfare, and Rural Development Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan launched the nationwide ” Khet Bachao Abhiyan ” from Ramasiya village in Raisen district, Madhya Pradesh . The campaign, which runs from June 1 to 30, will raise awareness among farmers about soil conservation, balanced fertilizer use, soil health cards, natural farming, water conservation, and scientific agricultural practices .
4 major appointments in Indian Armed Forces, Vineet McCarthy, Tarun Chaudhary and Rachel Thomas take charge

Several important appointments were made in the Indian Armed Forces on Monday. Vice Admiral Vineet McCarthy assumed charge as the 20th Commander-in-Chief of the Andaman and Nicobar Command (ANC) . Air Marshal Tarun Chaudhari assumed charge as the Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Central Air Command . Major General Rachel Thomas assumed charge as the Additional Director General of the Military Nursing Service .
5 India and Myanmar agree to further strengthen bilateral cooperation and economic ties

In a joint statement issued during the visit of Myanmar President U Min Aung Hlaing to India , the two countries reiterated their commitment to further strengthen their traditional friendly relations and strategic partnership. Both sides agreed to give new impetus to bilateral cooperation, economic ties and regional partnership. The Myanmar President arrived in Gaya, Bihar on Saturday on a five-day visit to India. He is accompanied by a high-level delegation including several cabinet ministers, senior officials and business leaders. This is his first visit to India. The Myanmar President will also visit Mumbai tomorrow for interactions with business and industry leaders.
6 Prime Minister’s Swanidhi Scheme completes six years

The Pradhan Mantri Street Vendor AtmaNirbhar Nidhi (PM SVANidhi) scheme has completed its sixth year (it was launched on June 1, 2020 ). To commemorate this milestone, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) highlighted the scheme’s transformative impact in moving street vendors from struggling to make ends meet to becoming self-reliant through accelerated financial inclusion and comprehensive social security coverage. PM SVANidhi is a Central Sector Scheme launched in June 2020 by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs in collaboration with the Department of Financial Services (DFS). Launched in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, PM SVANidhi is a first-of-its-kind microcredit scheme that provides working capital loans to street vendors without any collateral, reducing their dependence on informal lenders and promoting financial inclusion through the formal banking system. Since the launch of the scheme in the year 2020, more than 1 crore 12 lakh loans have been given so far.

India won three more gold, two silver and one bronze medals on the final day of the 22nd Asian Under-20 Athletics Championships to finish second in the medal table . India won a total of 19 medals in the four-day competition , including 10 gold, five silver and four bronze. China topped the medal tally with 14 gold, nine silver and two bronze, while Japan finished third with a total of 18 medals, including five gold, five silver and eight bronze.
8 FIFA World Cup will now be telecast on ZEE

On June 1 , ZEE Entertainment Enterprises Limited acquired the broadcast rights for all FIFA events until 2034 , including the FIFA World Cup 2026. The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico from June 11 to July 19. 48 teams will participate in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, and 104 matches will be played. The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be broadcast live in India on the TV channel “Unite 8 Sports” and the Zee5 app. United 8 Sports is ZEE’s new sports channel. Additionally, the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup, the Under-17 World Cup, the Women’s Under-17 World Cup, the Under-20 World Cup, the Women’s Under-20 World Cup, the Futsal World Cup, the Futsal Women’s World Cup, and the Intercontinental Cup will also be broadcast live on ZEE Entertainment.
