1 The country’s first e-waste eco park will be built on 11.4 acres in Holambi Kalan

Taking a significant step towards sustainable development and clean urban living , the Delhi government has announced to set up India’s first electronic waste (e-waste) eco park . This state-of-the-art facility will be built in the Holambi Kalan area of north Delhi and will be developed as a national model towards a circular economy. It is one of the four e-waste parks proposed across India and will be developed in a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) framework under the Design-Build-Finance-Operate-Transfer (DBFOT) model. The facility will have the capacity to process 51,000 tonnes of e-waste each year, covering 106 categories of waste listed in the E-Waste Management Rules 2022. This will include old computers, mobile phones, household appliances to industrial gadgets.

India’s first underwater museum and artificial coral reef will be developed around the decommissioned warship INS Guldar near Nivati Rocks in Vengurla in Sindhudurg district of Maharashtra . The project, supported by the central government, aims to promote scuba diving and future submarine tourism and marine conservation. The Ministry of Tourism has approved around Rs 47 crore for the project . The 1,120-tonne ship was decommissioned in January 2024. It has been officially handed over by the central government to the Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation to convert it into a submerged museum. The environmental clean-up of the ship has been completed and soon it will be submerged at the designated site to start coral reef construction.

Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal co -chaired a productive business roundtable on Machinery, Electrical and Metals (MEM) industry with Swiss Federal Councillor Guy Parmelin in Switzerland . Mr Goyal said they discussed promoting innovation, facilitating partnerships and joint workforce training. The focus is also on opening up new investment opportunities following operationalisation of India’s Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement (TEPA) and European Free Trade Association (EFTA). Mr Goyal also witnessed the signing of an MoU between ASSOCHAM and SwissMEM to strengthen industrial cooperation, promote innovation, growth and skill development.
4 Lt Gen Rajeev Ghai appointed as Deputy Chief of Army Staff (Strategy)

In a significant reshuffle in the top leadership of the Indian Army , Lieutenant General Rajeev Ghai has been appointed as the Deputy Chief of Army Staff (Strategy) . This post gives him the responsibility of overseeing the Army’s Operations and Intelligence Directorates – which are among the most strategically important branches of the Indian Army. According to the Ministry of Defence, Lt. Gen Ghai is currently serving as ‘Director General Military Operations’ (DGMO), and with this new appointment, he will hold the responsibility of both the posts simultaneously. He took over as DGMO on 25 October 2024.

6 France and Brazil launch international initiative to promote ocean-related climate action

On the first day of the third UN Ocean Conference , France and Brazil have launched an international initiative to promote ocean-related climate action . The Collective Pledge for Ocean Security calls on all countries to include oceans in their climate plans ahead of the UN Climate Change Conference, which will take place in Brazil in November this year. Along with Brazil and France, eight countries – Australia, Fiji, Kenya, Mexico, Palau and Seychelles – have already joined the initiative. These countries have committed to include the ocean in their climate plans under the Paris Agreement.

9 Prime Minister’s Safe Motherhood Campaign completes nine years

Launched in June 2016 , Pradhan Mantri Surakshit Matritva Abhiyan (PMSMA) is a flagship initiative of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India . Designed to provide free, quality and assured antenatal care (ANC) services to women in their second and third trimesters, PMSMA focuses on women in their second and third trimesters and is conducted on the 9th of every month across the country . By June 2025, more than 6.19 crore pregnant women have been screened under this program, which is a significant public health achievement. The main objective of Pradhan Mantri Surakshit Matritva Abhiyan is to ensure safe delivery and protection of the newborn to pregnant women. This campaign is conducted across the country on the 9th of every month and focuses on pregnant women in their second and third trimesters. Due to the combined efforts of the government in ensuring antenatal care and proper nutrition facilities for pregnant women, India’s Maternal Mortality Ratio (MMR) has improved significantly from 130 per lakh live births in 2014-16 to 80 per lakh live births in 2021-23, i.e., a significant reduction of 50 points.
