The United Nations has declared 2026  the International Year  for Rangelands and Pastoralists, a landmark decision to shine a spotlight on some of the world’s most under-noticed, yet vitally important ecosystems. 2 India becomes the world’s first bio-bitumen producer: A historic step towards sustainable innovation in road construction

India  has   pioneered sustainable road construction technology by starting  the world’s first  commercial  production of bio-bitumen . This historic announcement was made by  Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari  at a CSIR technology transfer event in New Delhi  . The successful technology transfer, titled  ” Bio-Bitumen via Pyrolysis: From Farm Residue to Roads ,” was an indigenous innovation developed by the CSIR-Central Road Research Institute  (CSIR-CRRI),  New Delhi  , and  the CSIR-Indian Institute of Petroleum, Dehradun  (CSIR-IIP). This achievement not only marks a major step towards reducing dependence on fossil fuels but will also help address environmental challenges like stubble burning.  Bitumen, a black, viscous substance  derived  from crude oil  , is  used as a binding material in road construction  . In contrast, bio-bitumen is produced from biomass and agricultural waste, offering a greener and more environmentally friendly alternative. Nitin Gadkari said that this innovation will reduce dependence on fossil fuels and will also solve the problem of air pollution caused by burning of agricultural residues.
