1 Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri launched E-85 fuel for flex-fuel vehicles.
On the occasion of World Environment Day , Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri launched E-85 fuel for flex-fuel vehicles at an Indian Oil petrol pump in New Delhi . Addressing the event, Mr. Puri described it as a historic initiative. He announced that E-85 fuel will cost approximately ₹20 per liter less than conventional E-20 blended fuel . Highlighting the benefits of E-85, Mr. Puri said it offers significant environmental benefits by reducing greenhouse gas emissions and reducing dependence on imported crude oil. He said the government plans to expand its reach to 500 outlets by December 2026 and approximately 5,000 outlets by December 2027. E-85 contains 80-85 percent ethanol and 14-19 percent petrol. It can only be used in flex-fuel vehicles that can run on ethanol blends ranging from E-20 to E-100.
2 Shoko Ishikawa becomes the new representative of UN Women in India
On June 5 , Shoko Ishikawa was appointed the new Country Representative of the United Nations Women Organization (UN Women) in India . Ishikawa will serve as the representative of UN Women in India. On June 4, she presented her credentials to the Ministry of External Affairs of India in New Delhi. Ishikawa has also served as UN Women Country Representative in Bangladesh and Vietnam. Ishikawa will prioritize the economic empowerment and security of women in India. UN Women is a unit of the United Nations that works for gender equality and women’s empowerment.

4 India handed over 72 healthcare facilities and 12 heritage projects to Nepal as part of the reconstruction programme after the 2015 earthquake.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met with Nepal’s Foreign Minister Shishir Khanal in New Delhi . Following the meeting, Mr. Jaishankar virtually handed over 72 healthcare facilities and 12 cultural heritage projects to Nepal as part of the post-2015 earthquake reconstruction program . The two leaders jointly launched the UPI Samvad to facilitate personalized money transactions between the two countries. The two leaders also exchanged a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Digital India Bhashini and Kathmandu University to co-create national digital infrastructure for a ‘ Voice First ‘ language translation platform for Nepal .
In a significant move towards enhancing consumer transparency and promoting fair trade practices, the Department of Consumer Affairs has amended the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) dated 29.12.2023 for determination of net quantity and standard pack size of edible oils and fats under the legal metrology framework . The revised Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) prescribes standard pack sizes for major edible oils and blended edible oils, including palm oil, soybean oil, sunflower oil, mustard/rapeseed oil, groundnut oil, sesame oil, rice bran oil, cottonseed oil, and corn oil. The permitted standard pack sizes are as follows :

These standard sizes will allow consumers to compare prices between different brands and make informed purchasing decisions. Packages less than 200 ml or 200 g will be exempt from standardization, providing consumers with affordable smaller pack sizes. Edible oils found in small quantities are also exempt from standard pack sizes.
6 Praggnanandhaa wins Norway Chess 2026 title
Indian chess superstar Grandmaster R. Praggnanandhaa won the Norway Chess Tournament 2026 on Friday (June 5, 2026) . He defeated Germany’s Vincent Keymer in the final round to finish first in the tournament with 18 points . This victory is also historic, making Praggnanandhaa the first Indian player to win this prestigious tournament . American player Wesley So was leading before the final round, but Praggnanandhaa’s victory and Wesley So’s match ended in a draw, allowing Indian player Praggnanandhaa to finish one point ahead. Wesley later defeated Alireza Firouzja in the Armageddon to finish second with 17 points. Praggnanandhaa made history by winning four consecutive games with a superb performance, defeating world number one and defending champion Magrus Carlsen for the second time in the tournament. Praggnanandhaa also scored a resounding victory against his compatriot D. Gukesh. Praggnanandhaa became only the second player to win four consecutive classical matches at this tournament since 2021. 7 India defeated Japan in the final of the Under-18 Asia Cup hockey tournament.
India’s Under-18 boys’ team won the Asia Cup hockey tournament in Kakamigahara , Japan . India defeated Japan four to one in the final . Ashish Tani Purti scored three goals. Captain Ketan Kushwaha also added one. India defeated Pakistan five to three in the semi-finals .
8 Under-18 Asia Cup: Indian youth women’s hockey team wins bronze after defeating Korea
The Indian women’s hockey team on Saturday won the bronze medal in the Under-18 Asia Cup with a resounding 3-0 win over Korea in the third-place match . Goals from Sandeep Kumari (2nd minute), captain Sweety Kujur (16th) and Nausheen Naz (33rd) secured India’s place on the podium. After a narrow shootout loss to China in the semi-finals, the Indian team made a strong start against Korea, taking the lead within the first two minutes.
In the recent rankings released by the World Boxing Federation, Meenakshi has been declared the world’s number 1 player in the 48 kg weight category . Meenakshi has previously held the number 1 position in the world rankings and now she has achieved this position again. She won the gold medal in the recently held Asian Boxing Championship. Apart from this, she won the gold medal in the World Boxing Cup held in Greater Noida, while she won the silver medal in the World Boxing Cup. Meenakshi’s biggest achievement was seen in the World Boxing Championship held in England. In the final match of the competition, she won the gold medal by defeating Kazakhstan’s experienced boxer and four-time world champion and Olympic silver medalist Nazim Kaizhebay.
10 KS Bharat retires from international cricket
Wicketkeeper and batsman K.S. Bharat has retired from international cricket . He represented India in Test cricket. He played his last match against England in Visakhapatnam in February 2024. The 32-year-old Bharat made 19 dismissals as a wicketkeeper. Bharat was part of the Indian team that played the World Test Championship final against Australia in June 2023.
11 India announces squad for T20I series against England and Ireland, with Shreyas Iyer named captain.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced the Indian squad for the T20 series against England and Ireland . Shreyas Iyer has been named captain, replacing Suryakumar Yadav . Tilak Verma will be the vice-captain . Vaibhav Suryavanshi has been included in the squad for the first time .
World Food Safety Day is celebrated annually on June 7th . This day provides an opportunity to raise global awareness about the importance of safe food, prevent foodborne diseases, and spread the message of “safe food, healthy life.” Indeed, safe food is essential for a healthy society, a strong economy, and a sustainable future. Recognizing the serious global challenges posed by foodborne diseases, the United Nations General Assembly passed a historic resolution on December 20, 2018, declaring June 7th as World Food Safety Day. It was first celebrated in 2019 , and since then, the day has become a global public awareness campaign. Two key UN agencies, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), played a key role in this initiative.
