1.Over 5 million people internally displaced in India in 2019: UN report:

More than five million people were internally displaced in India due to natural disasters, conflict and violence in 2019.India constituted the highest number of new internal displacements in the world during the period followed by the Philippines, Bangladesh and China.

The ‘Lost at Home’ report, published by the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF), said that almost 33 million new displacements were recorded in 2019, around 25 million were due to natural disasters and 8.5 million as consequence of conflict and violence.

In India, the total number of new internal displacements in 2019 stood at 5,037,000 – including 5,018,000 due to natural disasters and 19,000 because of conflict and violence.

2.Indian Navy launches Operation Samudra Setu to repatriate Indian citizens from overseas

Indian Navy has launched Operation Samudra Setu as a part of a national effort to repatriate Indian citizens from overseas.Indian Naval Ships Jalashwa and Magar are presently enroute to Malè in Maldives to commence evacuation operations as part of Phase-1.

Indian Mission in Maldives is preparing a list of Indian nationals to be evacuated by Naval ships and will facilitate their embarkation after requisite medical screening.

A total of one thousand persons are planned to be evacuated during the first trip, catering for COVID- related social distancing norms vis-a-vis the carrying capacity and medical facilities available onboard.

The ships have been suitably provisioned for the evacuation operation.

3.NITI Aayog starts ‘Surakshit Dada-Dadi & Nana-Nani Abhiyan’ to protect senior citizens during COVID-19

Government think tank NITI Aayog in association with Piramal Foundation launched a campaign ”Surakshit Dada-Dadi & Nana-Nani Abhiyan” focussed on ensuring well being of senior citizens during the COVID-19 pandemic.The campaign will reach over 2.9 million senior citizens in 25 districts across Assam, Bihar, Jharkhand, MP, Maharashtra, Rajasthan & UP.

The campaign is aimed at creating awareness about various aspects of senior citizens’ health and lifestyle including preventive measures and requisite behavioral changes in view of COVID-19 pandemic.

4.Himachal Pradesh govt to launch ‘Nigah’ to aware family members of migrant returnees

In Himachal Pradesh, the state government is planning to launch a new programme Nigah, in order to sensitize and educate the family members of the people coming to the state  from other parts of the country.Under this programme Asha, health and anganwadi workers would be deployed to create general awareness in maintaining social distancing during home quarantine.

The stringent action would also be taken against those individuals who will not follow home quarantine.

Under the Nigah programme a team of ASHA, health  and Anganwadi workers would sensitize the family members of persons arriving from other States regarding the importance of social distancing, so that they could be saved from any possible infection.

5.Jharkhand govt launches 3 schemes to spike man-days for MGNREGA to help returnee migrant workers

The Jharkhand government has launched three schemes to generate 25 crore man-days for MGNREGA to enable the workers earn wages as well as bring in a long-term plan to provide steady income to the poor households.Chief Minister Hemant Soren launched the ”Birsa Harit Gram Yojana” (plantation scheme), ”Nilamber-Pitamber Jal Samridhi Yojana” (water scheme) and ”Veer Shahid Poto Ho Khel Vikas Yojana (sports scheme) on with an aim to develop rural Jharkhand.

The three schemes of the state’s rural development department set a target of creating 25 crore man-days for the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee (MGNREGA) scheme with about Rs 20,000 crore.

6.Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath launches ‘Ayush Kavach-Covid’ App

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath launched ‘Ayush Kavach-Covid’ app to help people get health remedies which can be useful in fight against COVID-19.The app has been developed by AYUSH ministry.

The ‘Ayush Kavach-Covid’ App will provide measures to boost immunity based on natural resources.

The app is designed to tell users how commonly available kitchen ingredients such as tulsi, clove and cinnamon can be used to enhance the body’s immunity to fight against COVID-19.

7.West Bengal govt launches exit app for stranded people of other states

The West Bengal government launched an app for people from other states who are stranded in West Bengal due to the lockdown and want to return to their native place, state.  A large number of people from other states are stuck in West Bengal due to the lockdown, they can access the app for online permission to leave the state.

Persons willing to go back to their native states can apply online through this ”Exit app”.

8.Max Bupa appoints Krishnan Ramachandran as MD, CEO

Max Bupa Health Insurance has appointed Krishnan Ramachandran as its new managing director (MD) and chief executive officer (CEO).He succeeds Ashish Mehrotra, who has decided to pursue another opportunity after a successful stint of almost five years.

Ramachandran has over 23 years of experience in health insurance, healthcare and life sciences segments.

He last served as the CEO of Apollo Munich Health Insurance.

9.RBL names Deepak Kumar as CRO

Ratnakar Bank Limited (RBL) has named Deepak Kumar as its new Chief Risk Officer (CRO) for a tenure of two years.He will be replacing Ramnath Krishnan as the lender’s CRO as decided in its Board of Directors meeting.

Deepak Kumar has over 37 years of experience.

He was a part of the Reserve Bank of India’s resolution committee for the PMC crisis and also has experience as Chief General Manager of the State Bank of India.

10.Russian President Putin Honours Kim Jong Un With Commemorative WWII Medal

Russian President Vladimir Putin has honoured North Korean leader Kim Jong Un with a commemorative World War II medal to mark the 75th anniversary of victory over Nazi Germany.That the medal was awarded to Kim for the role he played in safeguarding the memories of Soviet soldiers who died in the territory of North Korea.

Last year, Kim was invited to Russia on May 9 to attend the military parade in Moscow for the 75th anniversary.

The Russian government’s honour for Kim came when his sudden public disappearance recently had fueled conflicting media reports about his health being in grave danger.

11.IIT Bombay professor wins Young Career Award by the government for his work in nano science

Professor Saurabh Lodha from electrical engineering, IIT Bombay, has received the Young Career Award in Nano Science & Technology for the year 2020 instituted by the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government. of India.This award recognises his pioneering contributions in the development of logic transistor technologies beyond silicon and nanoelectronic devices based on two-dimensional Van der Waals materials.

Professor Lodha’s recent work in the area of advanced transistors has been driven by strong industry partnerships.

Specifically, he has developed new materials and processes to improve the thermal stability and reliability of the heart of the transistor to lower the resistance of metal contacts to the transistor and also to achieve higher levels of electrical impurities while keeping leakage currents under check.

These advances help future electronic devices such as mobile phones, servers, desktops and laptops, to perform tasks faster, consume less power, and last longer with lower failure rates.

12.Former Union Minister Dalit Ezhilmalai passes away

Former Union Minister Dalit Ezhilamalai passed away in Chennai.According to sources, the 74-year-old died after suffering a massive cardiac arrest.

Ezhilamalai was a leader of the Pattali Makkal Katchi, and was Union Minister of State, Health and Family Welfare (Independent Charge) during the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government in 1998–99.

He was elected to the 12th Lok Sabha from Chidambaram.

As an army officer he took part in the 1971 Indo-Pak war. He was a recipient of the Sainik Seva Medal from the President for meritorious service in the Army.
