2 India ranked 9th in Germanwatch’s Climate Risk Index 2026 for 1995-2024

 

According to a new report published by Germanwatch  , the Climate Risk Index (CRI) 2026 ,  released at  COP30  in   Belém on  November 11, 2025  , more than 9,700 extreme weather  events between 1995 and 2024  killed more than 832,000 people , affected nearly  5.7 billion people  , and  caused economic losses  exceeding $4.5 trillion (inflation-adjusted). Germanwatch is a  Bonn -based  environmental and development organization  that advocates for global equity and sustainability in climate policy. The top three most affected countries  are Dominica, Myanmar, and Honduras. The countries with persistent risks  are India, the Philippines, Nicaragua, and Haiti.  India ranks 9th among the most affected countries during the period 1995-2024  , experiencing frequent floods, cyclones, droughts, and increasingly extreme heat. India ranks third, after Bangladesh and the Philippines, in terms of the number of people most affected by extreme weather in 2024. India was ranked 15th for 2024. Since 1995, India has experienced nearly 430 extreme weather events, resulting in over 80,000 deaths, affecting 1.3 billion people, and causing economic losses of approximately $170 billion. The report cites major disasters such as the 1998 Gujarat cyclone, the 1999 Odisha cyclone, the 2013 Uttarakhand floods, the devastating floods in Maharashtra and Tripura in 2019, and Cyclone Amphan in 2020, which are being linked to climate change.

3 Winners of the Earthshot Prize 2025 announced in Rio, Brazil

 

The winners of the Earthshot Prize 2025  were announced  in  RioBrazil  , and each  will receive   £1 million to pursue their projects to reverse climate change. The Prince of Wales,  who established  the global environment prize in 2020,  said the winners are an “inspiration” and “proof” that progress is possible. The prize  was inspired by former US President John F. Kennedy  ‘s  Moonshot project  , which challenged scientists to safely land astronauts on the Moon and return them. There are five Earthshot goals for which the prize is awarded: protecting and restoring nature; cleaning our air; reviving our oceans; creating a waste-free world; and improving our climate. This year, nearly 2,500 nominations were received from 72 countries. From these, 15 finalists were selected, from which five winners were chosen. The Earthshot Prize  was established in 2020 by Prince Williamthe Royal Foundation  , and  David Attenborough  , inspired by John F. Kennedy’s Moonshot Challenge of 1962.

 4 India’s first river terminal inaugurated in Guwahati

 

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman  inaugurated   a  river terminal on the Brahmaputra River  in  Guwahati, Assam ,  touted  as  the first of its kind in India .  The Gateway of Guwahati Terminal  and  Jetty , which she inaugurated,  is a functional floating terminal built by the Assam Inland Water Transport Development Society at a cost of ₹304.95 crore. She  also inaugurated the Brahmaputra Riverfront  in Guwahati  , part of  the Guwahati Smart City project  , which will be a promenade along a 1.2-kilometer stretch of the river. It will include a boulevard, landscaped gardens, cycling tracks, children’s playgrounds, a health park, and commercial areas. This terminal, built on the banks of the Brahmaputra River, is expected to transform both passenger and cargo transportation and boost tourism in the region. The project was first launched on May 13, 2022, when the Chief Minister laid the foundation stone. The Guwahati Gateway Terminal will serve as a central hub for all ferry and vessel operations under the Inland Water Transport Department of Assam.

5 ISRO tests main parachute of Gaganyaan crew module in Jhansi

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO)  recently   tested the main parachutes of the Gaganyaan crew module at the Babina Field Firing Range (BFFR) in Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh. The test was conducted as part of the ongoing Integrated Main Parachute Airdrop Tests (IMAT) series to qualify the parachute system for the Gaganyaan mission at the Babina Field Firing Range (BFFR), Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh   .   A  simulated mass equivalent  to  the crew  module  was dropped from an altitude of 2.5 km using an Indian  Air Force  IL-76 aircraft  . The parachute system deployed as planned, executed flawlessly, and the test object achieved a stable descent and soft landing, validating the robustness of the parachute design. For the Gaganyaan crew module,  the parachute system  comprises a total of 10 parachutes of four types. The descent sequence begins with two apex cover separation parachutes that remove the protective cover of the parachute compartment, followed by two drogue parachutes that stabilize and slow the module.

6 37th Meeting of the Parties to the Montreal Protocol MOP-37 in Nairobi

 MOP37  of the Parties to the Montreal Protocol was held from 3  to  7 November 2025  at the headquarters of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)   in  Nairobi, Kenya . It was preceded by an informal meeting on facilitating the implementation of the Montreal Protocol  on   2 November 2025.  Commemorating this important milestone, all Parties are preparing to leverage the Convention’s success to make further progress in protecting both the ozone layer and the climate.  In 1985 and 1987, respectively, the Vienna Convention and its Montreal Protocol  were adopted to   protect  the stratospheric ozone layer  by phasing out the production and consumption of ozone-depleting substances, including chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs), halons, methyl chloroform, and methyl bromide.

7 Rear Admiral Satish Vasudev takes over as Chief Staff Officer, Western Naval Command

 

Rear Admiral Satish Vasudev  assumed charge as the Chief Staff Officer (Operations) of the Western Naval Command  on Saturday  . He is a seasoned naval officer and a recognized expert in navigation and direction. The Admiral was commissioned into the Navy on July 1, 1993. He is an alumnus of the National Defence Academy (NDA) Khadakwasla, the Defence Services Staff College (DSSC) Wellington, and the Naval War College, Goa.

8 Indian archer Kushal Dalal won the men’s compound title at the GT Open Indoor World Series.

Indian archer Kushal Dalal  has   won  the men’s compound title of  the GT Open Indoor World Series   in  Luxembourg . Kushal won the gold medal by defeating former world number one archer Stephen Hansen of USA  in a double shoot-off. Earlier, Kushal had defeated world champion Nicolas Gerard of France in the semi-finals. India’s Ganesh Maniratnam Tirumuru won the bronze medal in the under-21 men’s compound category.

9 National Press Day 2025

National Press Daycelebrated on  16 November  ,  marks the  inception of the Press Council of India . National Press Day (16 November) marks the establishment of the Press Council of India in 1966   under  the Press Council of India Act, 1965. The 1965 Act was later repealed in 1975, and a new Act was enacted thereafter. Under this new law, the Press Council of India was reconstituted in 1979. Established as an independent body, the Press Council’s primary role is to ensure that the press maintains high standards of journalism while remaining free from external influences.
