1 WCL 2025: South Africa team became champion after defeating Pakistan

AB de Villiers  ‘ brilliant batting helped  South Africa Champions  beat  Pakistan Champions  by  9 wickets  in the final of   the World Championship of Legends (WCL) 2025  held at EdgbastonBirmingham to win the title . With this emphatic win, South Africa achieved the distinction of becoming the champion of the second edition of the tournament and stopped Pakistan’s winning streak from reaching the final stage.

2 Indian study on role of nutrition in TB outcomes influenced WHO global policy

 

A landmark  Indian study  has  influenced global policy on tuberculosis  .  The World Health Organisation (WHO)  has said that a study from India that showed the positive impact of nutrition on tuberculosis (TB) outcomes has contributed to global guidance on the world’s most infectious disease.  Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR)  led by  in Jharkhand  , provided the first evidence that additional nutrition can significantly reduce TB cases and deaths. Based on its findings, the WHO has updated its global guidance on TB, the world’s most infectious disease.

3 Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma launched ‘Chief Minister Nijut Moina 2.0’ to promote higher education of girls

 

 

Assam  Chief Minister  Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma  launched  the Mukhyamantri Nijut Moina 2.0 Scheme  in  Guwahati  . The scheme   is a monthly financial assistance scheme  to increase the enrollment of girls in higher education . Nijut Moina, a flagship initiative of the Government of Assam, aims to empower girl students by providing financial assistance to reduce school dropout rates and promote higher education . Girls from all families, irrespective of their economic status, are eligible for this scheme. Under this scheme, monthly financial assistance will be given to girl students from high school to PG level in government and government-aided educational institutions. A Higher Secondary (HS) first year student will receive an amount of ₹10,000, i.e. ₹1,000 per month for 10 months. A graduate level student will receive an amount of ₹12,500, i.e. ₹1,250 per month. A postgraduate (PG) level student will receive an amount of ₹25,000, i.e. ₹2,500 per month for 10 months in a year. In this financial year, more than four lakh girl students will benefit from this scheme.

4 ISRO’s HOPE mission

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO)  launched   a 10-day high-altitude isolation experiment  in Ladakh   on  August 1, 2025. The   mission, conducted at  an altitude of 14,000 feet , simulates the extreme conditions faced by astronauts   on  long-duration space missions to the Moon or Mars . The initiative is a part of India’s  Gaganyaan human spaceflight programme  and preparations for future interplanetary exploration.  The Himalayan Outpost for Planetary Exploration (HOPE)  mission  , located near  Tso Kar in Ladakh , has been launched by ISRO to practice the life of astronauts for Gaganyaan. It has  been built by Bengaluru  -based space technology firm  Protoplanet  and was inaugurated by ISRO Chairman  V. Narayanan  a day before the mission began.

5 Indo-Burma Ramsar Regional Initiative (IBRRI)

The Indo-Burma Ramsar Regional Initiative (IBRRI)  is a collaborative effort aimed at  conserving and restoring wetlands in the Indo-Burma region  . The initiative  is jointly developed  by   the Ramsar National Focal Points (NFPs)  of Cambodia, Laos PDR, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam in collaboration with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Asia Regional Office  . The initiative plays a key role in the implementation of the Ramsar Convention’s strategic plan to ensure sustainable management of transboundary wetland ecosystems. The progress of the Indo-Burma Ramsar Regional Initiative was showcased during a side event at the recently   concluded  Ramsar COP15 Conference in Victoria Falls (Zimbabwe)  . On this occasion, IBRRI officially launched its Strategic Plan 2025–2030, which provides a transboundary framework to reverse the degradation and restore wetlands in member countries.

 

6 RBI approves merger of New India Co-operative Bank with Saraswat Bank

 

 In a significant move for  India’s cooperative banking sector , the Reserve Bank of India (RBI)  has approved the merger of  New India Co-operative Bank and Saraswat Co-operative  Bank, the country’s largest urban cooperative  bank  . The merger will be officially effective from August 4, 2025. Saraswat Bank will fully take over the assets and liabilities of New India Co-operative Bank. All branches of New India Co-operative Bank will now function as branches of Saraswat Bank. Customers and depositors of New India Co-operative Bank will now be treated as customers of Saraswat Bank, and their interests will be fully protected.

7 “The Conscious Network” – A book written by Sagata Srinivasaraju

In June 1975  , India  entered one  of the most tumultuous chapters in its democratic history  when Prime Minister Indira Gandhi declared a state of emergency . Civil liberties were suspended, elections were postponed, press censorship was imposed and thousands of political opponents were jailed. While many fought this battle in India itself, an amazing resistance movement was emerging thousands of miles away in the US.  In his book  The Conscience Network, journalist and author Sugata Srinivasaraju  presents the story of young Indians who refused to be silenced even while living in the US. Their struggle, even while living far from their motherland, became a symbol of moral courage and proved that the defence of democracy knows no boundaries.

8 FIFA launches India’s first talent academy for women in Hyderabad

 In a historic moment for  Indian football , the All India Football Federation (AIFF)  and  FIFA  have  joined hands to launch the country’s first FIFA Talent Academy for girls  in  Hyderabad, Telangana . The initiative aims to transform the future of women’s football in India, and provide world-class infrastructure, training and holistic development opportunities to emerging talent. The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the academy was signed at the Telangana Sports Conclave, Hyderabad. The event was attended by Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy and AIFF President Kalyan Chaubey. The academy is part of FIFA’s Talent Development Scheme (TDS) — an initiative to nurture young football talent globally. The Gachibowli Stadium complex in Hyderabad is the base for the academy, which will provide residential facilities, quality education, medical care, nutrition and mental health services to 30 boys and 30 girls every year.

9 UPSC launches new email alert system for institutes on recruitment ads

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC)  has   introduced  a new facility  for  academic and professional institutions to receive direct email alerts about  UPSC recruitment advertisements  related to their field. Under the new outreach policy, institutions that wish to subscribe to this email alert service can send a request to ra-upsc[at]gov[dot]in with the subject line  “ Subscription Request – UPSC Recruitment Alerts ”. UPSC Chairman Dr Ajay Kumar highlighted that this new initiative will address the issues of inequality and reach out to needy, deserving and qualified candidates.

10 Hiroshima Day 2025

Every year on  August 6  , the world  celebrates  Hiroshima Day to remember that devastating moment of World War II  , when the United States  dropped  an atomic bomb on the Japanese city of Hiroshima in 1945   The incident left deep scars on humanity, with thousands killed instantly and survivors suffering from long-term radiation effects. As we celebrate Hiroshima Day in 2025, it not only serves as a reminder of the immense loss but also of the urgent need for global peace, nuclear disarmament and a world free from the fear of nuclear annihilation. With the dropping of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945, human history witnessed unprecedented devastation. Three days later, the second attack took place on Nagasaki.

11 Prime Minister Modi inaugurated Kartavya Bhawan-3 built on Kartavya Path

Prime Minister  Narendra Modi  on Wednesday  inaugurated the newly constructed Kartavya Bhawan-03  on Kartavya Path in  New Delhi  . During this, he also visited an exhibition related to the construction of Kartavya Bhawan-03, which showcases the modern features of the building and highlights the aspects of the building constructed to ensure environmental sustainability. The building  is spread over an area of ​​1.5 lakh square meters  and has  a total of 850 office rooms  . The building has seven floors including two basements and ground floor. This building is the first of the ten Common Central Secretariat buildings to be built  under the Central Vista project  . The construction work of the remaining buildings will be completed by 31 December 2025 and all the ministries will be shifted by 30 April 2026. Its objective is to make administrative processes more effective, increase coordination between ministries and speed up policy implementation. Currently, many key ministries are operating from old buildings such as Shastri Bhawan, Krishi Bhawan, Udyog Bhawan and Nirman Bhawan constructed between the 1950s and 1970s, which are now structurally weak and ineffective.
