1 Now ‘Hyderabad’ is the capital of Telangana, not Andhra Pradesh

The city of Hyderabad  officially ceased to be the joint capital of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh   on  2 June 2024. On 2 June 2014 , Hyderabad was made the joint capital of Andhra Pradesh and the newly created state of Telangana for ten years.  Telangana  was created as  the 29th state  of India  by splitting Andhra Pradesh in 2014. The state of Telangana was created by the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act 2014   passed  by Parliament under Article 3 of the Constitution . Under this Act, Hyderabad, the capital of combined Andhra Pradesh, was transferred to Telangana. Section 5(1) of the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act 2014 provides that Hyderabad shall continue to be the joint capital of the two states for a period of ten years beginning on 2 June 2014. Section 5(2) of the Act provides that after this period a new capital will be established for Andhra Pradesh, and Hyderabad will become the sole capital of Telangana.

2 India’s first female UN ambassador, Ruchira Kamboj retires after 35 years

Senior diplomat Ruchira Kamboj,  who created history by becoming  the first woman to become the Indian Ambassador  to  the United Nations,  retired on June 1 after an illustrious career spanning nearly four decades. Ruchira Kamboj was born on May 3, 1964 and was a 1987 batch Indian Foreign Service officer. She most recently served as India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, where she took charge from August 2022 to May 2024 and then retired. She has held the positions of India’s Permanent Representative to UNESCO in Paris, India’s High Commissioner to South Africa and India’s first woman Ambassador to Bhutan. She was the top-ranked woman in both the 1987 batches of the Foreign Service and Civil Services.

3 Halla Tomasdottir becomes the new President of Iceland

Iceland has elected  businesswoman  Halla Tomasdottir  as its new president, marking a significant milestone as she becomes the second woman to hold the esteemed position. Tomasdottir’s victory came when she won 34.3% of the vote, beating her rivals including former Prime Ministers Katrin Jakobsdottir and Halla Hrund Logadottir.

4 Centre launches new mobile number series for service, transactional calls

The Centre  has introduced a new numbering series 160xxxxxxxx, for making service or transactional calls.  The move is aimed at helping citizens easily identify legitimate calls and curb unsolicited voice calls from telemarketers using 10-digit mobile numbers. Currently, the 140xxxxxxxx series is allotted to telemarketers for promotional, service and transactional calls. However, due to its widespread use for promotional purposes, consumers often ignore such calls, thereby missing out on important service and transactional communications.

5 Claudia Sheinbaum was elected the first woman president of Mexico

Claudia Sheinbaum   has been elected  the first woman president of Mexico . Claudia Sheinbaum, the candidate of the ruling Morena party,  has won the presidential election with 58.3 to 60.7 percent of the votes. Sheinbaum won by defeating her closest rival Xochitl Galvez.

6 Assembly elections 24: BJP wins in Arunachal, SKM wins in Sikkim

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)  and  Sikkim Kantikari Morcha (SKM) have won landslide victories in  the recently concluded  Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim Assembly elections respectively  . According to the Election Commission of India, the BJP won 46 out of 60 assembly seats in Arunachal Pradesh, while the SKM won 31 out of 32 seats in the Sikkim Assembly. The BJP came to power for the third consecutive time in Arunachal Pradesh, while the SKM returned to power. Elections for the Arunachal and Sikkim Legislative Assemblies were held on April 9, along with the first phase of the national general elections to elect the 18th Lok Sabha. Counting of votes for the Arunachal and Sikkim Assembly took place on June 2, 2024, while counting of votes for the Lok Sabha will take place on June 4, 2024.

7 21st Shangri-La Dialogue concludes in Singapore

The 21st edition  of  the Shangri La Dialogue  or  Asian Security Summit , the premier defence meeting of the Asia Pacific region,  concluded in Singapore  on 2 June 2024.   The Shangri La Dialogue was held from 31 May to 2 June 2024 at the Shangri La Hotel in Singapore. It was attended by over a hundred delegates from the Asia Pacific regions and other parts of the world. The dialogue brings together security experts, including defence ministers, senior officials and non-governmental stakeholders on a single platform to discuss the most pressing security challenges in the Asia-Pacific, engage in bilateral discussions and identify new approaches. The Shangri La Dialogue or Asian Security Summit   is organised by the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS), London in  partnership with  the Government of Singapore .

8 CSIR’s ‘Phenome India’ project achieved the target of collecting 10,000 samples

The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) announced the successful completion of the first phase of  its groundbreaking longitudinal health monitoring project, ‘ Phenome India-CSIR Health Cohort Knowledgebase ‘ ( PI-CHECK ). To commemorate this significant milestone, CSIR organised a special event ‘Phenome India Unboxing 1.0’ at the National Institute of Oceanography (NIO), Goa today on June 3. The ‘PI-CHECK’ project, launched on December 7, 2023, aims to assess risk factors for non-communicable (cardio-metabolic) diseases in the Indian population. This unique initiative has already enrolled around 10,000 participants who have volunteered to provide comprehensive health data.

9 Department of School Education signs MoU with National Book Trust under Department of Higher Education to develop institutional framework for National e-Library

The Department of School Education, Ministry of Education  ,   Government  of India   signed  a Memorandum of Understanding with the National Book Trust  under the aegis of Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education for creating an institutional framework for  the Digital Library Platform, National e-Library  in New Delhi. Shri K. Sanjay Murthy, Secretary, Department of Higher Education, Shri Sanjay Kumar, Secretary, Department of School Education & Literacy, Smt. Archana Sharma Awasthi, Joint Secretary and senior officers of the Ministry were present on the occasion.

10 Real Madrid won the Champions League trophy for the 15th time

Spanish football club Real Madrid  has  won the 2023–24 UEFA Champions League title for the 15th time by defeating German football club Borussia Dortmund  2–0 in the final   . The UEFA Champions League final match also marks the end of the 2023–24 European domestic professional football season. The 2023–24 UEFA Champions League Final was played on 1 June 2024 at Wembley Stadium in England. This was the third Champions League final to be hosted by Wembley Stadium, which hosted the 2011–12, 2013–14 and 2023–24 editions.
