1 UN blacklisted Israel
On June 7, the United Nations (UN) blacklisted Israel . The UN has blacklisted Israel in view of the allegations of human rights violations against it amid attacks in Gaza. The office of UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres finalized this list with its annual report. After this, Israeli Ambassador Gilad Erdan was informed about it. This is the first time that Israel and Hamas have been added to this list. The UN list also includes the names of Russia, Afghanistan, Iraq, Myanmar, Syria, Yemen, Somalia, ISIS and Al Qaeda. Russia was added to this list last year in view of the atrocities on children amid the war in Ukraine. So far 37 thousand 700 Palestinians have died in the Israel-Hamas war that started on 7 October 2023, including 15 thousand 571 children. According to the UN, more than 23 lakh population of Gaza is on the verge of starvation.

3 Vellayan Subbaiah wins EY World Entrepreneur of the Year Award 2024
Indian entrepreneur Vellayan Subbaiah was awarded the EY Entrepreneur of the Year Award 2024 at a ceremony held at the Salle des Etoiles in Monaco . Vellayan Subbaiah became the fourth Indian to win the prestigious award in the award’s 24-year history. He joined the prestigious list of NR Narayana Murthy of Infosys, Uday Kotak of Kotak Finance and Kiran Mazumdar Shaw of Biocon Ltd. Currently, Vellayan Subbaiah is the Executive Vice Chairman of Tube Investments of India (TII) and Chairman of non-banking finance company Cholamandalam (Chola) Investment and Finance Ltd.
4 RBI launches Global Hackathon Harbinger 2024 to tackle financial fraud
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has launched its third global hackathon, HaRBInger 2024 – Innovation for Transformation , aimed at developing innovative tech-based solutions to predict, detect and prevent financial fraud in real-time . The hackathon has two main themes: ‘Zero Financial Fraud’ and ‘Divyangana Friendly’. Development of prototypes to predict, detect and prevent financial fraud in real-time using alternative sources of data, including publicly available information.
5 King Charles III currency notes issued in Britain
The Bank of England is replacing old banknotes, which feature Queen Elizabeth , with new banknotes featuring King Charles III . People can exchange their old notes for the new ones until June 30, with a limit of up to £300. The 75-year-old British monarch’s portrait will appear on all four banknotes – GBP 5, 10, 20 and 50 – on existing designs, and there will be no other changes to existing designs. The polymer banknotes featuring Queen Elizabeth II’s portrait will remain legal tender and will be in circulation alongside the new King Charles III notes.
6 Om Birla became the first Lok Sabha Speaker to be re-elected in 20 years
Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has achieved a remarkable feat by winning the Kota parliamentary seat on June 4, 2024. Winning by a huge margin of 41,139 votes, Birla has become the first Speaker to be re-elected in 20 years . The last Lok Sabha Speaker who won re-election to the lower house was P.A. Sangma , who served as the Speaker during the 11th Lok Sabha (1996-1998) . Sangma, who was then a member of the Congress party, was re-elected from Tura in Meghalaya in the 1998 Lok Sabha election.

8 NCLT approves merger of Air India and Vistara
The National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) approved the merger of Air India and Vistara . This has cleared the way for it to become one of the world’s largest airline groups . After the merger , Singapore Airlines will have a 25.1 percent stake in Air India. Vistara is a joint venture of Singapore Airlines and Tata Group . NCLT Chandigarh approved the overall arrangement plan involving Tales, Air India and Vistara. All are part of the Tata Group. Air India hopes that the merger will be completed by the end of this year. The two-member Chandigarh bench of NCLT said that the plan has already received the necessary approval from the shareholders and creditors of both the airline companies.
9 Nar Singh, Rohini Lokhande win Dilip Bose Lifetime Achievement Award
The All India Tennis Association (AITA) has announced the Dilip Bose Award for lifetime achievement to coach Nar Singh. The first award will be given to 69-year-old Rohini Lokhande , who was a member of the national team along with Kiran Bedi, Nirupama Mankad, Susan Das and Uday Kumar before getting into coaching in her youth. The All India Tennis Association introduced the lifetime achievement award in the name of Dilip Bose in 2002. The award, along with a cash prize of Rs 50,000, will be presented during the 11th National Coaches Workshop to be held at PYC Hindu Gymkhana in Pune on June 7 and 8.
10 SBI Mutual Funds cross Rs 10 trillion mark
SBI Mutual Fund has created a new record. The assets under management of SBI Mutual Fund have crossed the figure of Rs 10 trillion. It has become the first fund house in the country to achieve this figure. The giant of the mutual fund sector has handled the equity boom after the Covid 19 pandemic well. The fund house has also benefited from the increasing awareness about mutual fund investment.
11 Kumud Saini, the only Indian gold medallist at Archery Asia Cup 2024 Stage 3
Kumud Saini won the only gold medal for India at the Archery Asia Cup 2024 Stage 3 held in Suwon city of South Korea on 8 June 2024. The Indian archery team finished its campaign at the Asia Cup with five medals – one gold, two silver and two bronze . 17-year-old Kumud Saini was the only Indian archer to win a medal in the individual events. The remaining four medals were won in the team event. . Kumud won the gold medal in the individual women’s compound event. In the final, Kumud defeated South Korean girl Park Yerin 143-140 to win the gold medal. She won the fifth and final medal for India at the Archery Asia Cup 2024 Stage – 3 competition. Apart from this medal, Kumud also won two other medals in this competition. Kumud had won two other medals as a member of the Indian women’s and mixed compound teams.
12 World Oceans Day 2024 : 8 June
Every year June 8 is celebrated as World Oceans Day . The main purpose of celebrating it is to spread awareness among people about the importance of oceans and conservation of marine resources. These vast water bodies not only cover about 70% of the planet’s surface but are also home to countless marine species and produce about 50% of the world’s oxygen. The idea of celebrating a day dedicated to the oceans was first proposed in 1992 during the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro. However, on December 5, 2008, the United Nations General Assembly officially designated June 8 as World Oceans Day.
13 Former astronaut William Anders, who took the ‘Earthrise’ photo, dies
On June 7, former American astronaut William Anders died in a plane crash . He was flying a small plane alone in Washington late at night. 90-year-old Anders was a part of the first mission to take humans to the moon, ‘ Apollo 8′ . This plane crashed into water in the northern area of Seattle at around 11:40 am local time. On December 4, 1968 , during 10 rounds of the moon, the three astronauts took many pictures of the Earth rising above the moon’s horizon, ‘ Earthrise ‘. The goal of this mission was to prepare for Apollo 11, in which man was going to step on the moon for the first time. Apart from the Apollo 8 mission, Bill was also the backup pilot in the Apollo 11 mission . In this mission, Neil Armstrong took the first step on the moon on July 24, 1969. William Anders
